    While rats in general may not be so cuddly always remember the golden rule, all animals are different and have different personalities. Rats normally socialize with other rats and need that socialization. I picked mine because he did not like the company of other rats. He was always aggressive towards other rats even his own brood but when he was either solitary or with just me or other people he seemed to always be his happiest. He was also very cuddly and as weird as it sounds he would sometimes sleep with me. I fell asleep after a long day while I was playing with him and forgot to put him back, I woke up about to freak out that he got away only to see him sleeping next to me. It was very sweet.

      That's what I'm saying. Sometimes you meet an animal that is different than the rest. My rat Dean was like a dog in a rats body. So strange. He was a free roam rat on the sailboat we lived in. He chose to sleep next to me in bed almost every night. He'd still be there in the morning too. Run over to me from his favorite cubby across the boat and over to the bed right into my lap and flop down. I could always tell he was coming for me because he would run with this special quickness. He just exuded confidence and always did even when he was the smaller rat. When I met him he was in a tiny tank with a bunch of other babies. I put my hand in and he immediately walked out of the crowd all confident and jumped in my hand. Wouldn't jump off. I paid two dollars for his life. God I miss him
      Sorry. I just wanted someone to know about Dean.

    Reality: you only have them a few years.
    You get so attached to the little bums! You love them, care for them, and basically treat them like a human kid. Then next thing you know, they are considered "old" and then you worry about them "leaving". Damn you furry (and not furry) little balls of love squishes, why can't you live as long as a dog or cat, or even bunny?

    I have two rats Loki and Thor and each one is different form the other. Loki is very calm and listens while Thor not so much. Also Loki loves cuddles and when they are sleeping Thor literally rocks Loki to sleep and it's the cutest in the world. Rats are a bit hard to care for but they do make great pets in my opinion. They may not always listen, come when called, be playful 24/7 but they're pretty great pets in my opinion.

    Coming when called: Your expectation is actually my reality! Granted, they've never had much aptitude for learning tricks, and that's just fine, but they always come running when they know there's a treat involved! Also, in your reality segment of 'Getting along' I got to say, the behavior in the footage you showed is rather tame compared to my two. I kid you not, it sounds like bloody murder, but every time I go to check, they stare up at me like I'm stupid or something: 'Whaddya want? Yer interrupting our fun! Do you have food? No? Then go away cuz we're playin!' They are definitely louder and more aggressive than yours towards each other, but they were raised together, and are completely inseparable!

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  5 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Oh dear, make sure to separate her and her cagemate as they can mate again right after birth! I hear its a good idea to use a bin cage or tank when the babies are young to avoid injuries from falls and such, it might be worth making a bin cage just for the next two weeks.
      Otherwise I wish them luck, feed the mother lots of protein foods for her hard work, poor fluff will need it!

      Shadow The Rat yeah the same hours she gave birth to all her babies we went out and got a cage for my other rat rico they are separated and doing well I’m going to be looking at diys to make them a bed and I’ve been asking around to about how to care for them

I'm so excited I finally found a second hand critter nation 2 story cage for them. Sorry I just really wanted to tell someone. My pets, rats and my dog have always been mine and my daughters but she moved away for school and I'm the only one now to take care of my girls so I don't have have many people to talk to about them. The cage is huge and my babies are 5 months old you can imagine the room for them to play in lol

    just a suggestion, but if you see your rats fighting or sizing each other up always intervene with scruffing and forcing them to flatten or even force grooming them yourself, asert your own dominance over them as their leader, (if too rowdy a swift gentle but firm pop on the rear can be effective,) rats prefer a hierarchy they need the group structure, but its always good to make sure you are the asserted leader and a rat of YOUR choosing acts as your proxy to the rest. Setting up a hierarchy can prevent a lot of fighting and a dominator rat or the one you choose will adopt discipline and fight breaking up technics to keep the order, such as the hip bump or getting in the middle and pushing apart the two fighting using paws and feet, the infamous flying side kick to separate a rat about to start a fight. A great fighting discipline technic is having a small traveling cage as a 'time out cage' (this can double as a quarantine cage in a case of sickness.)
    Other then the 'get along' segment great video! (note: the tiniest bite can lead to abscesses and cysts; these can be fatal depending on location, theres also always a chance of inverse busting causing the rat to become septic, a vet who can remove them is good but expansive/or even a vet who can distinguish them from a tumor, many rats get put down for cysts and abscesses mistaken for tumors, which is why i recommend learning to distinguish & remove them yourself, so even for demonstration purposes its best to break that type of behavior up. The best way to avoid cysts and abscesses however is to prevent any form of skin breaking behaviors.)

      I had intention too I started a rat journal ages ago, but at the time when I had my group that I let run loose and teach me I was living in a two bedroom apartment that was completely contaminated with mold, it wasnt as bad back then but the effects slowly started to affect my life more and more and I had no idea what was causing them till it was too late, thus making it so I couldnt keep up with keeping the journal (more so updating the site enough that it didnt get taken down due to inactivity,) used to have slide shows dietary info, bonding info, and animal husbandry info(how to have rats and even another animal like ferrets get along (I do have videos of the ferrets and rats on my channel under this name (under the playlist "lets view pets" the one with the rats and ferrets is after we moved out of the apartment set up their own room the video is called 'fake grass blows their minds or something)
      Was in that place for 10 years the result, I have to sleep with a cpap machine, I only take in 65%(up from 35% since moving out of the apartment) of the oxygen my body needs I have been diagnosed with restrictive lung, I had to get sinus surgery upon which the ENT found a large mass in my left cheek, she said when they opened my cheek the whole OR filled with the smell of mold, has and is willing to put it in writing for when and if I do go after the apartment complex, to this day I still cant properly breath I am on a course of terbinafine oral, and have to regularly take prednisone. All of this has left me in a place of not really being able to function or maintain any sense of normalcy since. I do still have most of the info and journal entries and is something I always keep in the back of my head should I ever find myself in a place where I can mainatin things again (atm though I have taken a break from owning large groups of rats since moving from the apartment dont have a real safe way to set up a rat colony nor the space to set up a rat room, a flat small apartment was kinda perfect, a two story town hours with multiple electrical devices and places they couldnt potentially get into a lot less secure and a single room would be a good set up but I live with two other people Lol so space is limited (the two other people my fiancee and my brother, she wouldnt mind, but my lil bro may deff kill me LOL) At the moment we have 1 rat 4 ferrets, Cat, Chihuahua, and a Rabbit. As we rent the town house in our landlords own words 'No more animals until you reduce your numbers,' though thats also what they said before the 4th ferret and the rabbit LOL
      Our landlords are actually my parents they kinda took shit into their own hands after the ordeal with the apartment and got this townhouse then went through it and tore it to shreds to install a good air circulation system to keep moisture to a minimum to prevent mold build ups. So we are renting from them with the idea of future ownership once mortgage is paid off with the other maintenance fees.

    This is my second time having multiple rats as pets(3 this time) my girls are a year and a half old and never had any trouble potty training with smells etc. They are just amazing pets loving playful and full of non stop energy so reading these comments I'm going to assume that it's just a difference in personality and owners because as I said this is my second time with pet rats the first time I had two girls and they never fought and are absolutely amazing with kids especially with special needs and on the plus side they never bite and we are so in love with them
