you said you would link a video in the description where someone went through the cost of rat pet insurance and why it’s not worth it but i can’t seem to find it :(
If cage bar spacing is an inch or more you might need to mesh the outside of the cage that’s all I can think of really! Thanks for the awesome as always video.
I think the biggest problem I see with most rat cage setups in my country's rodent groups is the lack of enrichment. A lot will just have a litter corner, a house, maybe a hammock or a sputnik and some chew toys. Awesome video though, will definitely be linking it to those who need some more help with their rat care or are thinking about getting rats. ❤🐀
If you're on a budget, this is what we did. We used a $100 large dog crate, which I covered with mesh (attached with zip ties). Not expensive, just a bit of time involved. Bedding was dirt, dug from the garden, and hay. The dirt absorbs odour, we change every 3 weeks. One litter tray in the corner and they poo there almost exclusively. The cage is filled with branches from the garden, cardboard boxes for nests (although they also make nests in the hay), old ropes, a hanging plant basket, plastic tubes from the hardware store. Hammocks are old clothes, T-shirts or kids track pants, attached with clips to the top of the cage. Our 4 girls are the happiest rats ever in this set up, and most of this is free.
this was very helpful! thanks. Hammocks are kind of expensive, so this will help me, because my four boys are destructive, and quickly destroy their hammocks.
I'm so glad you mentioned having multiple water bottles. When I had sugar gliders I learned how important this was cuz I heard of other ppl that just had one water bottle that would stop working but they didn't know until their gliders died from dehydration 😔
Thank you for this video. Last week I found a rat behind a movie theater near where I live. He was so chill I figured he was someone’s pet so now I have him. I was never afraid of rodents but I was surprised how much I fell in love with him. I didn’t know they were so smart and cuddly!
@@ManWithTheCow He passed away a couple weeks ago unfortunately.. I don't know what I did wrong; He was always fed and watered and I played with him all the time. I’m a year late on commenting this, but thank you so much,Emiology! I’m going to look at rats tomorrow, and potentially get my two girls tomorrow! I’m so happy, and you’re where I got a lot of info from. If it weren’t for you, my future ratties probably wouldn’t have as good of a life as I plan on them having! Once again, thank you, Em! Hopefully you see this, and if not, I still hope you’re doing well! (I know you’re stopping owning them in the future, but your videos still help/helped!)
Great list! The syringes are also very useful if you need to rinse a wound with clean water, or if you need to collect a pee sample to test or bring to the vet.
I’m about a month out from getting my two little ladies :,) your channel was certainly the gateway into my extensive research and newfound rat obsession!
You don't 'need' brushes, but that hasn't stopped me from having a collection of tiny brushes to see what each rat likes more. toothbrush and small flea comb are popular.
This was a very helpful video. I'm babysitting 7 rats long-term. Luckily, I'm a crazy rabbit lady and a lot of stuff that works for my bunnies can be sanitized for the rats. I think these rats' owners could benefit from this video as well, so I will be sharing it. Thanks - you're making rats' lives better!
A good note for other viewers - you can save money (for your vet fund, maybe?) By creating toys for your rats. I like to cut out the relatively dye-free parts of boxes and make different structures for them to sleep in or climb on. Just be sure to remove any tape or staples!
i don’t have rats yet but i’m getting them soon. Something i learnt is if you don’t have a room to free roam them in you can do it in the bathtub! if you lay down a blanket and put hides in then it can be great for new bonding (i wouldn’t do this everyday though, just when bonding when they are new. Hope this helps!
I've had other pet rodents when I was very young, and recently adopted two rats from the Humane Society I work at. Sadly, they were left abandoned and taped shut in a box, in very cold weather. I've been binge watching all of your videos on caring for rats, and I just want to say thank you for putting this content out there! My boys are so so brave and social especially considering all they've been through. I can't wait until their permanent home is all set up!! I literally bought a new notebook and am taking notes after every video with more things to provide for them.
Thank you so much! I am getting my rats after summer holiday! But I had no idea that they needed all this health stuff. I will make sure to have this all before I get them
Aahhhh just what I needed, had a buddy day since I was celebrating my bday with my dad and now I can chill and watch an emiology video! Also super helpful bc I’m getting rats in a couple of month now! Thanks emi as always
For the playpen thing: the storage cubes are normally called c&c cages in the US. That stands for cubes and coroplast. Just wanted to pop that in here for anyone in the US who didn’t know what it was. These are used very often for guinea pig enclosures but obviously can also be used for other small pets like rats, rabbits, ferrets and perhaps even mice if you get the panel-type cubes rather than the bar type. Thank you for sharing your advice. I don’t own rats atm, but I would love to get at least a pair some day when I’ve got more room. Living in a 2 bedroom apartment with 2 adults, 3 kids and a whole slew of pets from reptiles to rodents (I believe the count is 19 reptiles, 2 guinea pigs, 20 mice [accidental pregnancies from lack of research. Don’t make my mistake! Do your research!] and 2 dogs), I just don’t have the proper amount of time or space for them right now. So I live vicariously through you on the rat front. 😅
Great list. I live in a big city in the US but vet care recently is hard to come by, even for our dogs. For rats most in the area can’t fit you in for emergencies unless you are already a client, so I took my 2 newest in for a check-up so 😢we would be on their list after learning the hard way with our older rats 😢
Instead of the cute (and expensive) hammocks I have bought for my rats, they choose to sleep either on the plastic shelves that came with the cage or the hammocks I have made them from a kitchen rags 😂 Definitely recommend them though! Cheap, come every color, easy to make and most important: super easy to wash and dry quickly. Just make sure they are made from rat safe materials and don't have any chemicals. Also glass & metal drinking bottles are the best! I have those + metal cups they drink from.
Hospital cages are a lifesaver my brand new rat is so sick. So he's stuck in there with his brother untill he's feeling better. His brother been fine. Heartbroken the breeder I believe sold me a sick rat.
Thank you Emiology, I know you don't keep rats anymore but I'm sure youre the quirky aunt of all of ours 😂 My four boys are living the best life with your suggestions ❤
Hi Emi, thank you for my order thats arrived. We have just rehomed 2 girls and ive been binge watching your videos. By far the best content I can find thats short and to the point. Please make or point me to a DIY rat toy video. Oh and i love your rat cuddle hoodie! I NEED it 💜
My new favorite thing is having a small animal playpen from Amazon for their outside playtime. I fill it with different areas, So I have a glass pie dish with shallow water they use for drinking and bathing and bobbing for pea treats, they have a box filled with macaroni they like snacking on, and cardboard scrap boxes from soda cans filled with crinkle paper. It's my new fave thing asking if they wanna go play and letting them forage and nest for an hour at a time while I clean their cage or hang out on my laptop 🥹 I also traded their old pan in their critter nation with a cement mixing bin and I was so happy seeing one of my boys popcorn around and bury himself in his bedding
thank you so much this was so helpful! and i’m getting rats in a couple days to a week, and pls do more of these videos so i can be the best rat parent ever lol, i’m actually get them tomorrow! i’m so thankful for this video tysm!
I had ordered a critter nation for my two boys , it came extremely broken and they refused a refund because i couldn’t prove that it came that way, I guess they thought I had damaged it. They are in the rat manor now , until I can save money for a new one .
On the topic of a vet fund one way to make one is from every paycheck set aside a couple dollars or more if you can afford to into a bank account and don't touch it this will be your vet fund
This helped alot, I'm a rOdEnT gIrL and looking into starting a rodent rescue and I need as much kNoLeDgE as I can, watching every video like this I can, and I'm going to try to make it a store kind of? But I want the animals to have a good care because a lot of rodents live kind of short lives (around 2 years) and you never know if they will be adopted in there life. So we're going to need some permanent quality homes, temporary or permanent, and like in big pet stores, with hamsters you'll see like a million hamsters in one cage, but hamsters like to live alone... So yeah we ain't going to do that. Nice video.
@@harleyquinn92. Actually, the oldest (2 years) is really struggling to live right now. She is breathing very shallowly and when offered food or drinks she doesn't take them. She's barely moving. I'm sorry for the sad information. We have 3 other rats that she knows and we adopted two babies about 2 weeks ago. Here are the names in descending (oldest to youngest) order. Trixie, Helga, Andy, Ginny, Cornbread, and Cookie.
I've been thinking about getting rats for months now and I'm thinking of getting two boys named Stinky and Biggie cheese, excellent names if you ask me
I had 7 female rats, and yes my female rats loved the wheel, only two of my female rats didn't want anything to do with the wheel, and one of them still went on the wheel to bother the younger females and let them spin her.
For potty corners, my rats mostly understand to poop in them and they don't poop in their cage as much. I have a split upstairs and downstairs so my rats thought that "hey we poop in this corner downstairs, we can do it upstairs too!" So after the first couple days having just 1, I had to go pick up another for the upstairs, bit oh my gosh has having these changed cage cleans! It's so much easier and I can reuse their bedding more which also saves a bit of money. Wish I had trained them sooner to use it! They still never really got the whole 'pee in it too' thing tho😂😂😂
I personally have 4 of my boys in a double critter nation. I also have 10 girls in a double critter nation, 2 of them my sister needed me to care for and their cage was far too small. She wants them back, but we won't let her until she can meet my minimum requirement. Their previous cage was a hamster cage from walmart with teeny tiny dimensions. Then I spent $60 to get her a bigger cage and a hammock so they could actually move around. The cage I got her was still a temporary cage, and although great for that purpose, is horrible for long term. They had nowbere to climb, no foraging, and only hanging toys. Now they're happy and no longer have squabbles. I have seriously got to do a cage tour, since right after one of my last rat videos I moved my rats into the double critter nations.
I have a question: Is it ok to use a transport cage for Birds as the hospital cage ? It looks almost like the ones you showed, just a bit taller and with no platforms in it. But you could put some in if you needed to.
im a little confused about the no tank comment, there seems to be a large tank behind you and you have exo terraniums for your mice in more recent videos, are these temporary enclosure you are just using, or are reptile terraniums good for mice, because i like the glass look and was inspired by your 'tank style' exoterranium tanks
Hey Emiology, thanks so much for all the care info you provide. I was forwarded a post on Facebook today about the new large wooden wheels where their hamster found the cage and wheel covered in blood, I was wondering how I could forward you the post as I think it may be something to warn your followers about, I don't know if anyone will see this but it's the wheel with the carrot in the middle and I'd just really hate for anyone's small pet to get hurt... I can't imagine how I'd feel if it was my hamster 😭
thank you for this, I got a rat for my snake but my snake ended up in shed and I’m trying to keep the rat alive and I’m just way to attached to it. I have no clue what to do other then give it a little home, I know they can’t be housed alone but I have no other choice since my parents wont let me get another one. (I will be trying to feed my snake mice for now on 😭😭)
If you’re unable to provide the rat with what they need unfortunately it’s best to either return it or rehome it to someone who can provide it with company and an appropriate enclosure 😊
Hey i was wondering if you could put a link for the snowflake Supreme bedding. I have been looking for this everywhere and i cant seem to find it online. Also, if you do/have found it does the company ship to the US. Thank you for your help and giving rats around the world amazing lives ❤
Great video! (as always)... and your hair looks super nice! I'm a happily married man so I'm not trying to get fresh lol but just saying - the color, the curl, and trimmed up bangs look nice 😁👍🏽
Not me letting them live on a bed when they're recovering! Supervision of course, and knowing their temperaments on "are they jumpers", but I don't want them to climb cages! My boys loved it when recovering from their neuter.
Really appreciate this channel it's super helpful. I'm just wondering, did you come across an issue with the aubiose bedding or just want to try an alternative?
My boys won't use a wheel.. And I made hammocks and also I'm getting 2 more baby's boys rat and I even made christmas stockings and I buy my stuff of rat rations for there food and treats xx
Really important to have dust free beddings! Rats are so sensitive to dust. Also important to have a small cage grid distance because baby rats and female rats can get through. So 2 of your cages you showed (2 black ones) is not recommended to baby rats and young rats. Good video though with good information for beginners!
Thanks for this video! I would love some advice on my cage, I’ve had rats for 3 years now and I had a cage that was more than big enough for my 12 girls (it was a massave ferplast double ferret cage) but now I have 6 girls, 4 are very old and 2 are about a year old. , so I recently downsized to a cage suitable for about 2-4 rats as they weren’t utilising their cage and only using a smal corner, they seem to be much happier in the smal cage as I have been able to fill it up more than the old one, but I’m not sure if downsizing was the right move.
What's the second cage brand Emi mentions at the beginning? I can't make it out... I'm in the market for a new cage and I'd like one with swing doors... I'm actually not a fan of the Critter Nation 'cos of the shallow tray.
@@Emiology oh thank you! yeah, i looked at the Critter Nation ones, i think they are also all on wheels... which is no good for me either, hahah. Ahh well, the search continues...
The only time my ratties would ever be in a tank is when I bring them home after that the tank will be out of their place and where I get my rats is like 4 mins away I also heard u mentioned digging and I have a small plastic bin that will be in their cage that will be their dig box is that okay?

For potty corners, my rats mostly understand to poop in them and they don't poop in their cage as much. I have a split upstairs and downstairs so my rats thought that "hey we poop in this corner downstairs, we can do it upstairs too!" So after the first couple days having just 1, I had to go pick up another for the upstairs, bit oh my gosh has having these changed cage cleans! It's so much easier and I can reuse their bedding more which also saves a bit of money. Wish I had trained them sooner to use it! They still never really got the whole 'pee in it too' thing tho😂😂😂
Can you make a vid of the deep dish for the cage?
I have 🙂
I personally have 4 of my boys in a double critter nation.
We’re just about to get a rat thanks to you we took all of what you said thank you so much
I have a question: Is it ok to use a transport cage for Birds as the hospital cage ? It looks almost like the ones you showed, just a bit taller and with no platforms in it. But you could put some in if you needed to.
As long as it’s not too tall it should be fine, for a hospital cage you don’t want them climbing too much if they’ve just had surgery etc 😊
@@Emiology Thank you :)
Wow that’s way nicer than what I keep my tats in, they get a shoe sterilit tote wire top. I breed for snake food so that’s why we differ.
Love the intro music, very rock n roll.
Thank you for the information this will really help me get started
Thank you tons for the help and the list
I love rats and I love all your informational videos!
love your vids!! just one question: where do you put the dig box? in the cage, or outside of it?
Both ☺️ sometimes in but sometimes not
I'm getting rats next month and this helped me alot thank you I'm getting 2 rats so this helped slot
early!! i love this video, so helpful!!
im a little confused about the no tank comment, there seems to be a large tank behind you and you have exo terraniums for your mice in more recent videos, are these temporary enclosure you are just using, or are reptile terraniums good for mice, because i like the glass look and was inspired by your 'tank style' exoterranium tanks
Mice can live in tanks, this video is about rats
Haha thanks!
Do you have any other recommendations for litter? Back2Nature isn’t available in my area unfortunately
If you search for paper based pellet litter you might find some other brands :)
ik 1 hour isn't too early but still the earliest I've been :)
You have been very helpful for me ❤
Not me letting them live on a bed when they're recovering! Supervision of course, and knowing their temperaments on "are they jumpers", but I don't want them to climb cages! My boys loved it when recovering from their neuter.
i love these vids please keep making them
10:54 Omg I could not agree more! I have a mini one and it is my best friend for bedding changes. My rats also think it's their best friend lol.
Really appreciate this channel it's super helpful. I'm just wondering, did you come across an issue with the aubiose bedding or just want to try an alternative?
It started becoming way too dusty
My boys won't use a wheel.. And I made hammocks and also I'm getting 2 more baby's boys rat and I even made christmas stockings and I buy my stuff of rat rations for there food and treats xx
Getting rats in a few hours lol, this came right on time!
Just came home with them! I’m so incredibly nervous to hold them. Their way more big than my mice
You'll be alright! Theres more of them to hold so less likely that they'll slip away
It's so insanely hard to actually find rat cages here in new zealand
How would get rid of ants because right I issues with black ants getting into my rats food
As usual amazing 🤩
I'm planning to get 2 to 3 rats at the end of the year, should I get the double or single critter nation cage for them?
If you can afford the double, bigger is always better 😊
@@Emiology double it is, the ratties will be spoiled for space! :)
Great video! I've had rats for a few years now but I'm always worried I'm not doing enough for them haha
Thank u Emi for these videos I have 2 girls sadly from a pet shop thank u for this love the videos
Oh my gosh, you were so helpful
Is a 120.5 cubic foot cage large enough for 12 rats and proper enrichment?
Thank you! Im looking into getting 2 female ratties and this and some of your other videos, help me to know how to properly care for them.
How do you make the base on a cage deeper? do you like make a forcefield kind of thing and fill it with bedding so they can burrow?
Really important to have dust free beddings! Rats are so sensitive to dust. Also important to have a small cage grid distance because baby rats and female rats can get through. So 2 of your cages you showed (2 black ones) is not recommended to baby rats and young rats. Good video though with good information for beginners!
I’ve never had an issue with even the tiniest rats slipping out of any of the cages I have 😊
Studying your vids rn
Thanks emi for this vid I’m getting rats and this was so helpful but I have one question how do I get to your shop
Liberta explorer!
Hi I need your advice I have some wooden stairs for my boys but I’d like to clear coat them to make it easier to wipe pee off of them do you know what I should use to be safe I’ve heard acrylic but what brand ?
