I appreciate your videos because they're very helpful for us expats. When I was in the Philippines my wife spent most of her time in Meycauayan, Bulacan and I was in Silang, Cavite where we have our house. She spent most of her time there because she wanted to see her family and friends which was fine with me. I brought our dog, which I had before we met, and I walked her around the subdivision where we have or house and I got to meet people that way. Plus there are some expats living there which made things easier when I was on my own. I also had a friend that would go to the grocery store every few days and he would ask if I needed anything so that was easier than trying to use public transportation. Sometimes I would buy food that people made and were selling in the subdivision or even buy fruits and vegetables. The people there are so wonderful and friendly which makes the experience of being in the Philippines even better. I went through the eruption of Taal and that's not going to keep me from returning and being 19km away from Taal is helpful for not being in the PDZ (Permanent Danger Zone) which is 14km or the danger zone which is 17km if I'm not mistaken. Maybe I'm a little crazy for wanting to live there but there are dangers wherever you live in the Philippines but I love the Philippines so the dangers are something that I will just have to deal with when or if they happen. Love conquers all. God bless the Philippines.

Thanks for sharing Steven. Would your wife be gone for long periods of time in Bulacan? Just curious as I was reading. And the local hospitality has definitely been something we've loved about everyone here. I'd say, if you really love and enjoy life in Cavite, continue to stay there! You only live once and when you do live, it should be on your terms.

@@TheSavvyExpat Yes sir she was gone most of the time during the 6 weeks that she was there. I was there for 10 months and she was there for only 6 weeks because she wanted me to see how I liked living in the Philippines. I did get to see her for about 7 days in a row due to Taal erupting but all the other time it would be a day here and a day there. I was mostly by myself from January to July when she got her friend from school to come there to be the maid. I ended up leaving on October 10, 2020 to go back to work and of course to see my wife. Our house is in Silang so it's home when I'm in the Philippines. The pandemic made it difficult for her family to come and visit. Anyway I guess life is how we make it and I wouldn't be so lucky if most people didn't speak English. I just had so much help with life there that it made life enjoyable. I guess that I got very lucky as many expats don't have it as easy as I do. Please feel free to ask me anything and ask as many questions that you want. Take care and God bless.

I have lived with my wife in Antipolo and Teresa, in Rizal province, for the past four years after moving here from Hong Kong. I don't know any expats, except for one of our tenants, and it doesn't particularly bother me. We have property, income, savings, dogs a plot of farmland and a happy family life with our kids. I have assimilated to my wife's Filipino attitude. As long as I have a regular supply of San Mig Light - in my fridge at home, not in a bar - I am perfectly content.

One topic that I have never seen addressed by any vlogger is the Filipino bus system. Hopping on a Victory Liner is the easiest and cheapest way to get from one town to another -- if you know what you are doing. You can travel the whole length of Luzon for only a couple of dollars. The larger bus terminals can be quite confusing, though, and the on-the-bus etiquette not quite understandable to a Westerner. Knowing how to get onto the correct bus while standing on the side of the road is most helpful also. I think it would make a most interesting video, and certainly one that can prove helpful to visitors to the Philippines.

When I was a child, my military family lived in Germany for 9 years. We found them to be gracious hosts and we tried to fit in. In contrast, I had school friends who hated Germany because Germans didn't speak English, didn't act like Americans, and their food was different. As I grew older I was able to travel, shop, and interact with Germans comfortably and they with me.
I want to visit the Philippines at some point. Channels like yours help me to understand the people, their customs, and their country. In my case, having first learned about the Philippines, including what mistakes to avoid, I would feel comfortable in a province. At that point, having left the U.S. for a while, I would want to experience Philippine culture and make friends. I think your points are all good, but you are preparing me to be adventuresome and to explore away from larger cities. Also, I am trying to learn Bisayan (Cebuano) so I can at least communicate in a basic way, despite the high level of English in the Philippines.

I too and from Chicago and have been seriously thinking of relocating to the Philippines. I know a lot of American frequent fliers and talked to many Phillipine immigrants who reside here. In May to June I spent 3 weeks in Cebu to get some boots on the ground experience. Made a couple rookie mistakes but minor ones. I now want to have an extended stay. I really like the idea of journaling about your feelings, experiences and especially your budget! I think I'm ready for a 6-12 month extended stay in the I.T Park or Maktan Newtown areas. One problem is that many of the English Language Academies are run by foreign investors from places like Japan and Singapore. Being 50 + negates my solid credentials to earn some supplemental income and I'm not sure if I can get a retirement visa. I'll continue researching but I have to say your channel has been incredibly helpful. Cheers from Chicago!

Thank you for stepping up and providing your comments and advice on living in the Philippines. It is nice to see the younger generation's perspective on many of these issues. We old guys tend to be set in our ways quite often, and things can fly right over our heads without us even noticing them. I am most fortunate to have a source of good, reliable information as today we celebrate our 48th wedding anniversary with my Filipina sweetheart. We are still a year or two away from being able to spend more than four weeks at a time in Zambales. We would like to be there from October through March each year. Kind of a "part-time expat." instead of a Florida Snowbird we would be Filipino snowbirds. Any more than that and we'll miss the kids and grandkids far too much. Even in our situation we do learn a lot from yours and others videos and greatly appreciate the time and effort you put into them. Filipina Pea and Gayyem Ben have become our honorary mga apo and we'd like to extend the invitation to you also.

I probably made all but last mistake (I keep a diary & emailed elderly relatives of my daily activities.) I moved here to lice 2 months after a trip here (about my 300th trip since 1971) after packing up & buying a one way ticket, bought a house 5 hours drive from Manila in a small brgy, which I had visited many times as my ex's family mostly live in the area. I was prepared for most things, having spent half my working life travelling & living out of a case in different countries, so was used to different foods & cultures, and had no trouble adapting to a new environment. I did know a lot about PH before coming here & was prepared to bend to fit in. Now, at 74 and 4 years of living here, I am still happy I made the decision and have blended into the community and accepted by all. Despite living on a small pension I manage to save a lot, not trying to, but as you know rural life is cheaper than city living. I am not interested in having steak with every meal, but quite happy with a small amount of chicken, pork or fish, with vegetables & rice, & it has been over 2 years since I have even had anything from Jollibee. preferring to cook myself, or eat from roadside stalls or sari's. I have 6 cats that keep me company, family & friends that drop in regularly, get invited to social gathering around the brgy but prefer to read a book to going out. I think life is what you make of it yourself, and one good friend or family member can make a world of difference. Prepare for the worst, but be gracious accepting the best and just go with the flow & you should survive here OK. Great channel you run with good advice for people.

But my Filipino boyfriend doesn't live in the cities you mentioned. He lives in Legazpi. It has also good infrastructure I guess. I will visit him soon for vaccation first and if I like it I want spend the cold months there with him. His family lives next to the jungle. We will sleep there for a night too but he told me already that this place is nothing for me (no running water in that house for example). Be ready for a very slow paced life in the province. It will feel that time is not running. I'm from Manila.and whenever I go to the south I feel this way. I've been in Europe so many times the first thing you will need to adjust to is the weather
Usually foreigners gets flu and cold I the first week of stay in the tropics.

I totally agree with you on the criticizing point. I have seen plenty of comments on different Vlogs with people down talking the Philippines. I will usually reply to their ignorance and tell them the same thing Americans tell foreigners that complains about the country "you don't like it, leave".... It's funny how they are patriotic to their country and defend against down talking but have no issues down talking countries that allow them to enter.

    Tuli,
Your words ring so true. I went to the province go old very quick. The water going off and power failures were very tough. I miss American food and l felt isolated.
I did not rush but l miss a great deal more than l thought l would miss.
My wife and l had been married over 30 years when we decided to move. Supporting the family was something l was not that used to.
I did not make the mistake of criticizing the country but l still disliked the rigors of the inferior infrastructure. I wish l had a better back up plan.
The province is not Little NY or Little LA.
Thankfully l had few vices...and l had little to overcome in that respect.
It is easy to over spend in the islands of paradise.
I brought plenty of clothing but the laundry was tough on my American clothing.
    I did document my journey.
    Thanks for the wise words.
    Stay well...

Wow, Big Ed made the editors final cut lol.
Great points on all that you mentioned. The vices, PH bashing and speed dating too many girls (as in a different girl every night grabe!) are a few things that prevented myself from hanging out with many foreigners while I was there. Much rather company of those that appreciate the good of the PH and have understanding and patience for the things we Westerners don’t understand. If and when I knew something would be a headache to me like a long que or whatever, I would just ask my wife to handle it since she grew up with it and doesn’t find it to be a hassle. Unlike us Westerners who are use to short ques and maybe short patience lol.

Good advice, ease into a new situation gradually, more likely to work out in the long run. Of course, everyone is different, but this approach makes sense to me. About criticizing the country, in the US we criticize our country all the time, but in a foreign country you have to be sensitive to how it sounds coming from an outsider. It's like criticizing your host's house when you're visiting as a guest, would be impolite in any culture.

Interesting that you mention tracking money as a mistake. Most Americans I know do track expenses, especially for food, gasoline, and electricity. I was criticised by Filipinos, and I know others were also, for keeping track of my money. I was called a "counter" and was told that is bad to do in the Philippines. When I came to the Philippines I had already made friends with people here, so I had a place already rented and furnished and guides to help me. But I did not come here with the intention of ever returning to the US. That was a mistake, because at sometime here, people always want to go back home even for a visit and, if you have cut all ties, it's difficult. Things can change so much in a few, short years. I did learn not to criticise but ask questions. It's the best way I know to learn about the customs. I think that my biggest mistake was over estimating Filipinos concern with Religion. As a Roman Catholic, I expected to find more people interested in "church" things than just Sunday Mass. Being considered a Catholic country doesn't mean the people here are any different than Catholics in the US. Just means more people identify as being a baptised Catholic. Thank you for your videos.
