Selfless, thoughtful, used his brain before his brawn. That's why he's the archetype nobody could match. Walker, sadly, was a flawed but decent man suffering with PTSD, forced into being Captain America instead of receiving treatment for his trauma after war...then he got the serum. Of course he went sideways.

This selfless act of jumping on a grenade to save others was not invented for this movie. It's a real thing, that real soldiers have bravely done. This is what Tommy Lee's character was indeed testing for, this level of bravery. For just one recent, real-world example, look up U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Kyle Carpenter, who did this in 2010.
How that and "he's still skinny" sometimes doesn't get a big laugh is beyond me. Both make me laugh every time. Tommy Lee Jones' delivery was hilarious.

Everyone ran from it, but he ran towards it to try kick it away. He wasn't fast enough and got badly hurt, but came home. It came up with it being one of the big factors that that he was a hero before he was even enhanced. It went on to say that while Thor and Iron Man had to go through trials and growth to become the heroes they became, Steve was that from the start, showing his bravery and willingness to stand up for what was right even when he was still small and weak, possibly making him more worthy than even Thor.

I have NOT served in any branch of any military. But if my civie brain had to guess, the flag was actually supposed to teach teamwork! A whole gaggle of guys clambering over eachother aren't going to get anywhere. The ine furthest up is getting pulled down by his squadmates as they try to gain purchase, and get ahead. The only way to get it down (barring Rogers' method) is to work together. And while one man might get the glory (or ride back to camp), the mission would be a success. But that's just my interpretation.
This is why Captain America is one of my top 5 favorite Avengers from the movies along with Hawkeye, Falcon, Black Widow and Black Panther. Hawkeye is my favorite and I still say they did my boy Clint Barton dirty in the MCU franchise. He's one of the few Avengers capable of beating any of the Avengers with just his skills and brains. The way they played down his character is just criminal. Hawkeye and Black Widow should've got solo movies back in Phase 1. Marvel could've at least done a joint movie called "Black Widow and the Hawkeye" about their time in Budapest then some solo films later. Enjoyed the reactions 👍👍✌ out.
This is what has been missing with Captain Marvel and most post-Endgame MCU flicks: Insultingly, we the audience are not shown, but TOLD that Captain Marvel is the "strongest, bravest, best-est friend, blah blah blah" but we never see her stand up for her friends, like Bucky, or do the unthinkably selfless, like jump on a grenade. SHOW dont TELL, is what makes a great movie. More SHOW.

Anyone jumping on the grenade has accepted that they will die. It's not about "thinking" you are brave. It's about actually being brave. People die to save others all the time.
