You inspire me. I am amazed at your creativity! And you soap with your mom I saw in another video, that warms my heart. My mom has been gone 10 years this year and I believe she would have loved the beauty of not only your soaps but the craft itself. She was a amazing quilter and created works of art in fabric. Your choices when you choose your colors remind me of her. ❤
Kevin, so apparently this is teacher appreciation week, and since you are my favorite teacher I want to say thank you for inspiring me. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, and creativity. I hope to be as awesome as you someday soon. When I watch you create it's exciting. You rock!!!
Hey Jenis, so glad my videos have helped. In general lower temps mean slower trace. That being said, it's only one factor and your choice of oils, fragrance and additives can influence it as well. Go with a simple recipe that's higher in Olive oil (say 30-40%, that should help). As far as supplies at local stores, you could try AC Moore or Michaels they have a few things but your better bet is to order online. Soap Makers Resource is in Lancaster, PA but I think they are online only. good luck!
I really enjoy your videos Kevin, keep up the good work! Please tell me where you purchased the beautiful raspberry colour? Thanks and I look forward to many more videos. Marie
Hi Virgs, I almost always say what the products are and where they come from in the video itself when I go over the recipe. In this case it's a liquid colorant called "raspberry" and it's from Celestial Colors: celestialcolors.com/category/all2.php
I saw this and had to try it. Being a beginner, mine didn't come out as nice as yours. My zebra section was not as defined. Thanks so much for the tutorial.
I love watching you Kevin, and I liked your mother too, she's cute!!!! And your so good to her. I think its sweet the two of you soaping together!!! Can I ask where you got that raspberry coloant at? thats so pretty......thanks Carol :)))
Kevin, this was a fantastic job. I always love your videos as well as your art. Where did you get the fragrance.? It sounds like it would be simply yummy!
I was surfing the web one day, and somehow just randomly found myself watching a video of making hand made soap...and I kind of fell in love. I've always been a crafty person but for some reason, making soap just struck a chord with me. I love the "sciency" part as well as the artistic part, it's a great combination of the two!
It was created by Vinvela Ebony and posted on her site Dandelion as the zebra swirl: dandelionseifee.blogspot.co.at/2013/02/dandelion-seifen-im-januar-2013.html
Beautiful! i like the color very much! by the way, where can i but the cutting soap machine? i always cut the soap only one piece one time.... Just want to find other things can instead for.
Hey kevin ive never done soap cause im scared :( and you are making me want to just take the leap, i was wondering the lower the temperature of the lye and oil the slower it takes to begin setting up? And do you know of any local stores that sell ingredients, ie fragrance oils. im from Freeland PA...btw love your videos
I almost always discuss the products in the video itself. The pink is called raspberry and it's from Celestial Colors, the white is titanium dioxide from Brambleberry and the black is called blackest black from TKB Trading.
AWESOME SOAP...love it! Why is it called dandelion swirl? and did u pour the remaining pink over a spatula to stop it from penetrating the lower level?
good question, i have no idea why it's called that. and yes, i poured the batter over the spatula from going down into the batter. thanks for commenting.
Hi, I thought your soap turned out just awesome, such sharp colours, I like it, do you ever have problems with soda ash ? do you put your soap in the fridge right away and for how long? Thanks so much in advance
I very rarely have ash. I do typically put my soaps in the fridge as soon as they are done and I usually leave them overnight, take them out in the morning, let the soap come to room temperature over a few hours and then cut it. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Kevin Devine thanks so much for replying, I always have ash, and it's just driving me crazy and making me want to quit trying to make soap! I'll try your fridge method, it sounds great, thanks again
I usually put my soaps in the fridge. It doesn't guarantee that the soap won't gel but it helps to prevent it (It's hard to predict the gel, there are so many variables...your recipe, the type of the mold use, additives, fragrances, colorants, etc.)
Kevin, the few recipies u worked with in your videos, as far as amounts of Castor, it's pretty hight, did u ever have any problems with DOS? I am trying to figure out my culprit i've been experiencing oflate, and castor has been a guess?ty.i love ur videos by the way...love ur organization.
Hey Nicole, I've used the recipe form several months and haven't noticed any DOS (I've actually never had DOS with any recipe). I know many soapers typically used Castor in the lower ranges (4-5%) but I've never had any issues.
Rita Manick Hey Rita, I have only done melt and pour a few times, so I'm no expert but I would think this would be pretty hard, if not impossible, to do with melt and pour. The technique relies on one color pushing another color around and it requires the batter to stay fluid...I would think the melt and pour would firm up to quickly to be effective. But why not try it on a small scale? If you do, let me know how it turns out!
You're being very humble. That soap is incredible, you picked the perfect colors and the contrast is amazing! Thanks for sharing!

Rachel Erickson Thanks, what a nice compliment. Sadly I lost my mom last September...I miss her every day.

I have yet to try a slab mold...I'm kind of dying to try a peacock swirl...but I hate soap in squeezy bottles...well it's the cleanup I hate :)
I saw this and had to try it. Being a beginner, mine didn't come out as nice as yours. My zebra section was not as defined. Thanks so much for the tutorial.
You are very welcome, and stick with it...I really lucked out with this fragrance as it slowed things down and kept the batter nice an liquid.

Thanks Rae Ann!
you're very welcome (there is a little over spill on the end, because it's a little short...but the end cuts took care of most of mine.)
Very informative and relaxing watching your videos, Kevin. What prompted you to become a soap maker?
I was surfing the web one day, and somehow just randomly found myself watching a video of making hand made soap...and I kind of fell in love. I've always been a crafty person but for some reason, making soap just struck a chord with me. I love the "sciency" part as well as the artistic part, it's a great combination of the two!
I understand the Zebra, which looks great. The Dandelion factor is lost on me, I must say? Looks to have an incredible texture, Kevin
It was created by Vinvela Ebony and posted on her site Dandelion as the zebra swirl: dandelionseifee.blogspot.co.at/2013/02/dandelion-seifen-im-januar-2013.html
And I love your zebra swirl!!
Beautiful! i like the color very much!
by the way, where can i but the cutting soap machine?
i always cut the soap only one piece one time....
Just want to find other things can instead for.
Thanks. The cutter I use is from Essential Depot: www.essentialdepot.com/servlet/the-569/Soap-Cutter--dsh--Perfectly/Detail

Beautiful! Love ur videos. Can u tell us the brand/colour of the raspberry u used? Did u win the challenge?
The color was from Celestial Colors (I go over all the supplies in the video). I didn't win the challenge but it was a lot of fun!
It is beautiful, thanks for the tutorial is very very helpful for us beginners.
you are very welcome!

Essential Depot
Kevin Devine Thank You Kevin. You did an amazing job with this challenge.
Thanks!
wow thats so cool. how do u even make soap??
+Kaylene Collie combining lye and oils.
very very nice I saw your first video real nice.
That came out great. You said you didn't get any gel. Do you always put your soaps in the fridge or freezer? Does that gurantee that they won't gel?
I usually put my soaps in the fridge. It doesn't guarantee that the soap won't gel but it helps to prevent it (It's hard to predict the gel, there are so many variables...your recipe, the type of the mold use, additives, fragrances, colorants, etc.)
Okay. Thanks Kevin.
