As a Submariner for the US Navy, Songs like these hit home pretty hard. It's hard going under the waves during the holiday. For others in the "Silent Service" keep strong and may the waves bring you home.
KathyW2200 My class uses it for warming up for both softshoe and hardshoe (dunno if that's what light and heavy mean, b/c I do noncompetitive), and everyone loves it. I was actually the first one to ask in my class, lol
supercookie20 Cool! Yes, light and heavy is soft shoe and hard shoe, respectively. My school is non-competitive-good to hear of others out there. Non-competitive Irish is very rare and much looked-down-upon where I live.
My grandpa who's a Coast Guard veteran got a kick out of that line about the Coast Guard with a glass against his eye he thought it was saying the Coast Guard were alcoholics
@@theconqueeftador69 I've been a a fan if Geoff for years! Voiceplay and his recent solo work, alongside Pentatonix and Home Free are up there with some of my favourite a capella groups! - (although not fully a capella, clamavi di profundis are also up there for vocals.)
I can't stop listening to this. The way the songs talk about the father's silver hair, and how the sailor's folks are growing old... It struck me like lightning. Words cannot discrobe just how good you guys are! Thank you so much for that!
Dear gods old and new I hope all you guys get the fame you deserve before you grow too old. I can't state how much myself and I'm sure many others love your work. I listen mostly on Spotify to ALL of your shanties and I can say honestly that none are bad. Some better than others sure, but no one song is bad. Your music is appreciated Longest Johns, don't think otherwise and I hope you all are well. Keen for a new album ;)
All day we fought the tides between the North Head and the South All day we hauled the frozen sheets, to 'scape the storm's wet mouth All day as cold as charity, in bitter pain and dread For very life and nature we tacked from head to head We gave the South a wider berth, for there the tide-race roared But every tack we made we brought the North Head close aboard We saw the cliffs and houses, and the breakers running high, And the coastguard in his garden, his glass against his eye The frost was on the village roofs as white as ocean foam The good red fires were burning bright in every 'longshore home The windows sparkled clear, and the chimneys volleyed out And I vow we sniffed the victuals as the vessel went about The bells upon the church were rung with a mighty jovial cheer For it's just that I should tell you how (of all days in the year) This day of our adversity was blessed Christmas morn, And the house above the coastguard's was the house where I was born And well I knew the talk they had, the talk that was of me Of the shadow on the household and the son that went to sea And O the wicked fool I seemed, in every kind of way To be here and hauling frozen ropes on blessed Christmas Day
I just found you guys about 3-4 months ago and I've been addicted to shanties since then. I'm considering even performing this song at the next show at my school
This is amazing, i love the fire ambiance in the background and the slight groundedness of the precussion, favorite christmas song ever. (Ps, harmonies amazing as always!) Good sailin to ya lads
I ran into this while looking for stories to write a maritime Christmas song around. A really wonderful job! I found it really moving, and I passed it along to some NW US/SW Canada maritime singers.
Oh wth I found the old version just a few weeks ago and loved it to bits. Thought "huh wish there were more like this". Didn't think I'd get a updated version lol now I have a new one to play on repeat lmao
Yet another great atmospheric video with brilliant harmonies as always. Well done all of you, and that includes Abbie for her excellent video skills. :)
Couldn't express how glad I am to have found you guys. You brought a new taste to my listening and I've been singing along to all of your songs. Sea of Thieves introduced me to shanties and this type of music but I wasn't hooked until I listened to you guys. Cheers!
Your bass singer is so goddamned talented, and of all your songs, I think this one showcases that the best. Such great ping/clarity of sound and carrying strength while being down that low isn't a small feat. You all are incredible singers, but as someone who also lives in the bass-ment of all my vocal ensembles, I gotta show some mad respect to this performance.
Fantastic! This has been one of my favorite songs that you've done for quite a while, and it was lovely to see it done this way. The fire crackling in the background gives it a whole different feel.
I just recently started to listen to your shanty singing and I love it!! I even try to sing along but I struggle a bit because I dont know all the words of the songs. But still I love your songs🤩🤩
Absolute favourite by you guys! Best way to start the New Year! I hope your 2020 is as fruitful and successful as your 2019! Keep on keeping on Longest Johns
