:(( He had such high hopes for Superman IV and then WB and Cannon Films just totally screwed him and the movie. I can't imagine how disappointed he was when he saw it for the first time and what they had done to it. I remember reading in one of his books how upset he was about it and still was. I wish we could have seen the movie the way Christopher Reeve wanted it to be. I'm sure it would have been awesome!!
Reeve didn't really care about Superman IV. He only did it to get funding for Street Smart, but he was also professional enough to put 100% into the performance.
Notice how Chris Reeve easily walks over the rocks and hops down and walks away but mark pillow can't keep his balance. He really was Superman it wasn't an act.
Also I noticed how Christopher didn't acknowledge Mark before he walked away! No handshake, or "Good Job!" or " Can you believe the things we are doing for our art?"
I believe in an interview with Mark Pillow he said that during the filming of this scene he had a broken foot. So I believe he was injured is why he's not moving around too good.
Watching this and listening to Christopher Reeve talk so passionately about how he thought it would be a great film I've learned one thing. Christopher Reeve was a very good actor.
They're both good actors of different types. Chris Reeve was shockingly good in this role and a few others--he was so good in this part that they fired Brando instantly from the sequel, paying him a lot of his money anyway, just because they realized all anyone wanted to see in II was Christopher Reeve. And Brando was the best actor in the world back then. That's how good Reeve was. Also an amazing writer and human being in other respects (you don't have your 'head re-attached' and then regain 70% of afferent nervous sensation and control over your hands over the next ten years; Daniel Day Lewis couldn't have done that, not from a lack of talent but because...uh...almost no one can. Severe C2 break and severing... Oh, and Lewis did fine work as Lincoln, or Hawkeye, but, um, he has a tendency to overact now and then ('Gangs of New York'). He's no god or Lawrence Olivier, christ.
Look, they tried, they tried to make the best movie they possibly could even when the budget was cut, Christopher reeve came back as Superman for the fans and to try to get the franchise out of the dumps! he didn't do it for the money he did it for ALL OF YOU! some said the movie wouldn't work but Chris had that hope that it would, people are allowed to have fun making a movie they don't have to be serious every second their filming, Chris put in all the eliminates that makes Superman great, it was Chris's vision for a Superman movie, him and everyone tried and no body can EVER bl-aim them for it.
Not true about the money. Gene Hackman was very open about doing the first film for a huge paycheck. There was nothing like that for this one--he came back because he wanted to be a part of it. They hadn't the money to pay ANY of the actors as much as you'd expect, and a glance at the script would have told them it was dangerous for their career. That's nonsense about money. Reeve and Hackman could have gotten similar check tieing their shoes at this point.
Hate to burst your bubble dude, but Reeve only came back becasue Canon said they'd fund his next project "Street Smart". He didn't give a shit about Superman IV, but he was professional enough to still give a good performance.
Syklone usually I’m all for different opinions, but in this case, you’re simply wrong. Chris cared about every single role he ever did, wether it was a alien in a cape, or a simple guy trying to make ends meet in the ghetto, he cared.
Don't care what anybody says. I love Superman 4. It has been my most favorite Superman movie since I was a kid. Nuclear Man was/is my favorite villain for Superman ever. Really surprised at how many people dislike him.
that guy was such a bad actor and the movie was so bad he never acted again lol. I used to think 3 was the best as kid as I got older three and four I can see all the flaws and realize how bad they are. first one is the best
***** Troll or not. Don't care. I still think Nuclear Man is STILL Superman's best villain to date. That puny Zod in Man of Steel can't even compare to this intimidating character.
james dean Not only that, but I remember being quite intimidated of Nuclear Man (Mark Pillow) when I was a kid. I think this is why I never encountered any bully in my life, none of them could intimidate me like Nuclear Man could. He was/is right up there with Chucky and Jack Nicholson in The Shining.
***** I'm seriously not trolling. Nuclear Man is, my opinion, the best super villain twin for Superman. I much prefer Nuclear Man over Bizarro and Ultraman.
Superman 4 was the best. Christopher Reeves is the best at playing Superman. Nuclear man to me was so cool. He had cooliest gear and the scariest look. They picked the right actor for that role.
I heard Warner Brothers split the budget for this movie with He-Man. Just imagine if Christopher Reeves, Richard Donner superman films were never made in the 1970s but were made now...they would make Chris Nolan cry.😨
As much as people give Superman 3 crap, Chris Reeves turned in a magnificent performance in an otherwise subpar film. His portrayal of evil Superman was fantastic and actually is the only reason for anyone to even watch the film.
When he says that superman 4 could be the best of all the movies, you can tell that it's his genuine feeling, he weren't saying it just to promote the film he believed in it 100% as he saw the superman film that it should've been, unfortunately the studio completely let him and the film down and Reeve was very disappointed with the outcome, which is unfortunate cause he had such fun during the making of 4
Well at least we know his heart was in it and it was not for a pay check. I think that's why I respect the movie even though it's not a good movie. It definitely has Reeves heart all over it.
Really glad you decided to come back and do this roll again. Contrary to what somebody might think about how it. It was fun to see him do it one last time and I didn't know that he played a role and how this movie was dictated and how it played out 🤔✨👍👌
Cannon were parasites... I think 4 would've turned out much better if the budget hadn't been cannibalized, forcing the release of an unfinished film. The first film had roughly 3-4 times the budget that this had.
Superman IV was the first Superman movie I saw as a kid. When you're that young, you don't notice many of the flaws or faults. It's too bad that Christopher Reeve's vision for the movie got stomped flat; you can tell that his heart was in the right place and that he had the best intentions for the film. And, honestly, I think it could have been spectacular had it been given a bigger budget and more time to be polished up. Maybe even the "definitive" Superman movie. But the final product comes off as unfinished and rushed.
If only Chris Reeves had the support from the studio & the money. It could have been a classic like the first 2 films. Chris was not only the Superman due to his performance but how passionately & seriously he took the role. Describing Superman as a world citizen, not just American propaganda is exactly what Superman is & should be. As stunning as the sfx are for the new movies by Zack Snyder & how they adapt the comic source material in terms of visuals & plots, I don’t think he gets it as much as Chris did in terms of the characterisation. Chris was so intertwined with that role. In that video you could see his leadership & passion with the staff & the film. Studio stopped Superman IV from flying higher than he could have.
Why did Christopher Reeve looked so SUPER in the REAL suit and now, every producer, director, and actor call it "the underwear suit"? Those are musclemen shorts from the times Superman was created 75 years ago. Dick Donner was the first to honor the creators, Shuster and Seigel, by crediting them and helping them gain back their rights on the Man Of Tomorrow. He also respected their view on the hero by suiting up the star as they saw him. Richard Donner and Christopher Reeve; the real ones! (Quit your job Zack Snyder)
Brava! Brava! Well said...2 years ago. Perfectly said--Donner and Manck and Reeve do great jobs of honoring the Superman of 1940 AND of 1967, and did right by the creators. Very well said. And blame Snyder for the shorts all you want. No one told him he could't add that permanent and iconic aspect of his outfit back in--the man just isn't very familiar with the character (few but Paul Levitz, Alan Moore, and Grant Morrison seem to understand who he is and why, as far as I can tell), just like DC often isn't. THEY thought Superman had become a worthless property by 1989, as it happens. So...some exec thought it was a good idea to lose the shorts on paper, and that gets Snyder off the hook for that...among 50 worse things? Please. Fire Snyder. Bring back someone who's studied Reeve and can where polyurethane. Then send him running across the street, changing posture as he pulls his shirt open...(and the Williams theme breaks into full stride). And don't forget our man is exceptionally smart. ...Anyway, that's how you make a Superman film. It's been 39 years, maybe someone should give that version another shot, hm??
People need to realize that Superman is not a dark character, he is optimistic and colourful and full of life. This movie had an optimistic message, therefore in my book it’s Superman! Sorry Zach Snyder
Unfrozen Cave Bear they tried? They used the same frame of Superman flying throughout the whole film, they gave him powers he never had in the comics (rebuilding a wall with his mind) the fighting actions scenes if you wanna call them that were god awful and Lacy Warfield can apparently breathe in Space and not die. But yeah, they tried lol
Frankie Gino the reason for all of the things you mention is that right at the start of shooting Canon cut the SFX budget in half and gave all the money to He-Man so the producers were faced with no choice but to cut corners and leave cheap looking shots in.
At least with 4 they actually tried to stay true to Superman, unlike the comedy film with Richard Pryor that just happened to have Superman in it that was 3. The only good things about 3 were the Smallville bits with Lana and the junkyard fight between Evil Superman and Clark.
Cannon had absolutely NO business attempting this type of film. It's because of their ambition and shitty money managing abilities is why they went belly up a few years later. The documentary Electric Boogaloo details all that.
If you take out the nuclear man element then I think it could have really been a good movie most more focus on the nuclear arms race and the decision Superman had to make whether or not to interfere or let the human race inevitably destroy themselves. In my opinion it's only the nuclear man plot of the movie that brings it down, I think everything else is awesome, if the story focused more on Superman having to deal with a real-world issue and the inner conflict from the Kryptonian council telling him not to get involved and his heart telling him that right thing to do is intervene, and more so the government's reaction to him getting involved and the people's reaction to him not getting involved at first, and that Superman isn't just an American hero but a hero of the entire world and all races, and if it should and you want to find world and the end of it that would have been the cherry on top.
***** If you watch the movie for the story and Superman' caracters, and forget about the cheap effects and rushed editing, it's as good as the first one.
I had a soft spot for this movie but looking back I think deep down I prefer 3 because that Clarke vs superman scene was great and as a hole it's better
After watching this interview I need to say 2 things. 1st, I always figured that the only reason Reeve did S4 was simply so Cannon would produce his other project "Street Smart". But I can see here that he really did have a genuine passion to do this. 2nd, he was right when he said 4 would be the best in the series. When I think of all the feats they tried to accomplish in the film, had the budget been right, S4 would've been IMO, the best and most entertaining film in the entire reeve series.
All this talented man wanted was to be a serious and respected actor and unfortunately the fickle public dismiss him in any post SM effort. He really was underrated and the Fates threw him a shitty hand as a reward to all the joy he brought people.
So sad, right at the end he says "if we get it right, and I think we are, it will be the best of the Superman movies" which of course we now know its not, poor Chris 🙄
BUT THE QUESTION IS WHO WAS IT THAT WROTE THE FILM NOT WHO DIRECTED IT. BECAUSE IF THE FILM IS BORING NOBODY'S GOING TO LIKE IT NO MATTER WHO DIRECTS IT
oh! reeve, you were always magical and perfect as superman, but this movie was your huge and terrible kriptonite..., i only saw this disaster once, and never more!!
Chris Reeve and his message to the world to have peace, is the movies important part. The story could be more realistic, but the quest for peace will live on.
He didn't make a worse movie. Canon studios fucked him because Golan and Globus were absolute scumbag con-artists who bullshitted their way into Hollywood by running a shell game with imaginary money.
I feel bad for Christopher Reeve because he wanted this to be the best of the series and it could have been if he wasn't the only serious actor in the film I also believe if nuclear man was less cheesy the he could have been up there with other great villains like Zod or the joker and also could have appeared in many more movies and also comics.
A tragically dark, bleak future lay ahead for him & he could not know it at the time. The good times of being "whole" & fully functional were soon coming to an end. :(
Of all the 4 movies, this one ranked last in my opinion. You obviously see the difference in quality from the 3 previous films (especially Superman I and II. They were better in screen quality). Now looking at the comments, this film did not receive a full budget and it shows. But in spite of this, I liked seeing Chris play the role one more time. He is still my favorite Superman actor.
I got to meet Christopher Reeve in 1981, learn about the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, he should be a hero as Superman, and also, he won't be riding horses within the year, he's allergic, then I will write a warning letter, that he will help the Team USA and play Men's Soccer ball games in 1994, and compete in the Summer Olympics in 1996 in Atlanta.
Cannon pictures sold out Christopher Reeve,Warner bros gave them 36 million to produce the film. They took 11 million to finish masters of the universe, and the 8 million spread out to other low budget movies and to save there dying company. 17 million on a Superman film is a joke , and Chris never got the opportunity to portray the hero again in a blockbuster film. He will always be the defining Superman, we all know it.
. ...Masters of the Universe. They should have just had Lundgren star as Nuclear Man and combined budgets :) Reeve did define the part, throws a good or ill shadow after everyone after. I watch other people try to play Superman on screen, but how do you measure up to him? I guess you study him, and learn what you can from him to make the part work. He'll always BE Superman, though. G'day!
watching a little behind the scenes I realized that there was a bit of an alter ego between Christopher Reeve and Mark Pilow, I saw a statement from him saying that it's not easy to work with Reeve, something like that!
If they had used Bizaro instead of nuclear Man, this film would’ve gotten more attention. It really is a shame that the last superman film with Chris bombed so badly. And yeah when I was a kid it didn’t matter to me because I went with my mom every single week to the video store waiting for that film to come out because I missed out on the theatrical release. So mom if you’re hearing me up in heaven I’m sorry for the grief LOL. But I’m glad that someone post this video because I’ve seen so many interviews with Chris after the accident and very few before. The guy knew the character so well and his intentions to bring it focus on nuclear disarmament were pure, but the script needed work and they cut too much out of the final product. They started out with a great introduction to Clark’s emotional state, having recently lost his mother and being forced to sell the farm because he not maintain it himself, powers and abilities or not. They should’ve focused more on that and perhaps brought back Annette who debuted as Lana in the third film. At least in that sense you would have a believable love triangle. It was even teased at the end of the film when Lois comes back and sees that Clark has given Lana a very expensive diamond ring and her facial expression. That could’ve set up a lot of ground to cover besides nuclear disarmament. Certainly that scene in Lois’s apartment where Clark has to switch back-and-forth between identities would have made for big laughs if it was Lana and Louis instead of Lacey and Lois. And for the record guys there’s no reason why Superman‘s love interest have to start with L.. Maybe Chris decided against Bizaro because they did that while Jekyll-Hyde fight in the third film, but I believe that it would have been great to see Chris in the stone white make up as Lex Luthor’s personal Frankenstein monster as opposed to this creature that was cloned from Superman But does not resemble him at all. And even though we got a great Lex out of him in later life, Jon cryer should’ve stayed in the brat pack and save away from this franchise LOL
This’ll sound corner because yes as an adult I can see the many issues this film had but as a child it was my first superhero movie I watched and boy did I watch it, over and over. I loved superman so much and as a child the effects etc were not bad they were amazing. It was superman 4 that encouraged me to watch 1,2 and 3. And to this day Chris Reeves, Richard Donner and the superman characters are still so special to me. So for me even though the movie wasn’t what it should be I’m grateful for it for giving me 25+ years of believing in what superman stood for.

I agree with you 100%
Reeve didn't really care about Superman IV. He only did it to get funding for Street Smart, but he was also professional enough to put 100% into the performance.
@@Syklonus Superman IV was Christopher Reeve’s baby in terms of he worked on the script and got a writing credit. He did care.
and later he was paralyzed by rogue CIA forces for his political beliefs and later murdered
Reeve wanted to write, direct, and get an anti-nuclear message out. The problem is...it made for a bad movie. Nuclear Man was corny and stupid.
Notice how Chris Reeve easily walks over the rocks and hops down and walks away but mark pillow can't keep his balance. He really was Superman it wasn't an act.
Yeah I noticed that too hahaha he's very athletic and graceful and obviously good with heights and not afraid of them
Also I noticed how Christopher didn't acknowledge Mark before he walked away! No handshake, or "Good Job!" or " Can you believe the things we are doing for our art?"
I believe in an interview with Mark Pillow he said that during the filming of this scene he had a broken foot. So I believe he was injured is why he's not moving around too good.
Nah Mark could have, but took advantage of the on set help like a jessy actor does.
Kevin Arco Mark Pillow is a horrible Actor. I see now why he never gotten any roles after being cast in Superman 4.
That scene between Chris and Margot where she returns the cape to "Clark--" STILL CRY MY EYES OUT. Bad film or not.
Watching this and listening to Christopher Reeve talk so passionately about how he thought it would be a great film I've learned one thing.
Christopher Reeve was a very good actor.
Just not a very good scriptwriter and director :(
+sonne sun the late Christopher Reeve (1952-2004) was the first actor who played Superman. 😢
he could have turned 60+ now.
He was a passable actor. Daniel Day Lewis is a very good actor.
Bay Sean Christopher Reeve most certainly was *not* the first actor to play Superman.
He was the best, another great film he was in somewhere in time, Paul 😁
Such a Great message of a movie . ❤
It was a Film that if was made Nowadays,it would of been a blockbuster..
Rip Christopher Reeve
Look, they tried, they tried to make the best movie they possibly could even when the budget was cut, Christopher reeve came back as Superman for the fans and to try to get the franchise out of the dumps! he didn't do it for the money he did it for ALL OF YOU! some said the movie wouldn't work but Chris had that hope that it would, people are allowed to have fun making a movie they don't have to be serious every second their filming, Chris put in all the eliminates that makes Superman great, it was Chris's vision for a Superman movie, him and everyone tried and no body can EVER bl-aim them for it.
I love his vision for Superman IV, it would of worked well if the budget wasnt cut and so much of the movie was cut out, 40mins alteast.
Wrong. They ALL came back for the MONEY.
I used to think 3 was the best as kid as I got older three and four I can see all the flaws and realize how bad they are. first one is the best
james dean troll
***** Troll or not. Don't care. I still think Nuclear Man is STILL Superman's best villain to date. That puny Zod in Man of Steel can't even compare to this intimidating character.
james dean
Not only that, but I remember being quite intimidated of Nuclear Man (Mark Pillow) when I was a kid.
I bet somewhere in the afterlife, Reeve is probably showing the real Superman 4 film.
We miss you Chris!
Superman 4 was the best. Christopher Reeves is the best at playing Superman. Nuclear man to me was so cool. He had cooliest gear and the scariest look. They picked the right actor for that role.
the REAL superman!
I like Christopher Reeve the best Superman
❤❤❤ best friend in the world
Warners needs to take this film back and strip it down and redo its effects and add the deleted footage
I saw this movie with my mom. Its a double treat. A Lego and a movie treat.
When he says that superman 4 could be the best of all the movies, you can tell that it's his genuine feeling, he weren't saying it just to promote the film he believed in it 100% as he saw the superman film that it should've been, unfortunately the studio completely let him and the film down and Reeve was very disappointed with the outcome, which is unfortunate cause he had such fun during the making of 4
Shame this movie didn't turn out so well. He clearly cared about the material, and Cannon films really let him down.
He got screwed over for Masters of the Universe. That's where the budget went.
I'm actually happy with that as I love Masters of the Universe. I love Superman IV as well mind you.
I love Mark Pillow. He's a great actor and incredible. And his uniform is amazing.💜 ☺☺☺☺☺☺☺
I like actually like all the Superman movies!
legend Christopher Reeve
Well at least we know his heart was in it and it was not for a pay check. I think that's why I respect the movie even though it's not a good movie. It definitely has Reeves heart all over it.
Really glad you decided to come back and do this roll again. Contrary to what somebody might think about how it. It was fun to see him do it one last time and I didn't know that he played a role and how this movie was dictated and how it played out 🤔✨👍👌
Superman 2 and Superman 4 are my favorite
I miss this guy....
Yes he is a legend and the best Superman of all time.
SGTBizarro Better editing could’ve salvaged the film.
Although IV wasn't a perfect movie, it's still a fun film to watch and I prefer it over Superman Returns.
Foi meu herói na infância.
Esse foi o verdadeiro Superman rsrs
Its a shame the movie didn't turn out as good as he hoped.
+pagb22 DC Comics themselves got rid of the trunks. Don't blame Zack.
True! I jusyt like blaming Snyder for everything. ;-)
Brava!
(There's just so much to blame him for...)
Christopher Reeves will be forever a legend!!
Reeve*
Milton Keynes which became New York City in the movie was only 20 years old in 1987 when this movie was released.
I got the collection for $100 back in '07 on blue ray...great films and they stood the test of time!
People need to realize that Superman is not a dark character, he is optimistic and colourful and full of life. This movie had an optimistic message, therefore in my book it’s Superman! Sorry Zach Snyder
Don't kill me...I like 4 better than 3.
In 4 they tried, at least. I salute you.
You can see just see that how Christopher Reeve is directing the crew of how much he cared for the Superman character.
Christopher had the right idea. I still liked the movie even though it had its moments. Much better than 3.
Don't be fucking stupid. It isn't a patch on III. The 'special fx' look like they were knocked up in a kid's bedroom. This movie is shit.
Olimpia Mirella he had the right idea. The execution may not have been all great though it was still better than 3.
***** If you watch the movie for the story and Superman' caracters, and forget about the cheap effects and rushed editing, it's as good as the first one.
pagb22 not sure about that but okay
He WAS superman 💙🇺🇲
Superman 3 was way better than 4 in fact I think 3 is a little underrated.
Rest in peace Christopher Reid
THANKS FOR SHARING!!!
All this talented man wanted was to be a serious and respected actor and unfortunately the fickle public dismiss him in any post SM effort. He really was underrated and the Fates threw him a shitty hand as a reward to all the joy he brought people.
BS... his arrogance did him in... find the video of him condescendingly putting down Brando.
BS... his arrogance did him in... find the video of him condescendingly putting down Brando. @@thawedcavebear
BECAUSE IF THE FILM IS BORING NOBODY'S GOING TO LIKE IT NO MATTER WHO DIRECTS IT
Best Superman Actor Ever. Rip Christopher Reeve
Enjoyed Superman 4 waaay more than 3
I really miss Christopher
This film is my guilty pleasure. So bad its good. Very entertaining to spot all the faults with it and there are many
oh! reeve, you were always magical and perfect as superman, but this movie was your huge and terrible kriptonite..., i only saw this disaster once, and never more!!
Chris Reeve and his message to the world to have peace, is the movies important part. The story could be more realistic, but the quest for peace will live on.
To me, he was the only one suitable to act as superman
0:56 "I had not been really thrilled with the way Superman 3 worked out." **Proceeds to make a movie ten times worse**
He didn't make a worse movie. Canon studios fucked him because Golan and Globus were absolute scumbag con-artists who bullshitted their way into Hollywood by running a shell game with imaginary money.
@@burntvirtue he just said he had alot creative control over this movie. He messed up just accept it.
Superman 3 was the best too me It was more enjoyable
His performance as both Superman and Kent were always brilliant. But this shows how bad his instincts were as a filmmaker.
Rip Christopher reeve
I feel bad for Christopher Reeve because he wanted this to be the best of the series and it could have been if he wasn't the only serious actor in the film I also believe if nuclear man was less cheesy the he could have been up there with other great villains like Zod or the joker and also could have appeared in many more movies and also comics.
Christopher Reeve the ultimate Best Always the only Man that can truly fly God Bless deeply missed
He a true gentleman in way he speaks to people. Could teach a few men including myself
BS... his arrogance did him in... find the video of him condescendingly putting down Brando.
A tragically dark, bleak future lay ahead for him & he could not know it at the time. The good times of being "whole" & fully functional were soon coming to an end. :(
Awesome 😃😃😃😃😄😄😃😄
O melhor Supeman de todos os tempos nenhum depois dele conseguiu chegar nem perto
They should have just had Lundgren star as Nuclear Man and combined budgets :)
Reeve did define the part, throws a good or ill shadow after everyone after. I watch other people try to play Superman on screen, but how do you measure up to him? I guess you study him, and learn what you can from him to make the part work. He'll always BE Superman, though. G'day!
Its a pity it didn't turn out the way he had hoped. Reeves was so likeable and sincere, but sadly the movie was a career killer.
watching a little behind the scenes I realized that there was a bit of an alter ego between Christopher Reeve and Mark Pilow, I saw a statement from him saying that it's not easy to work with Reeve, something like that!
Would love to have seen him be apart of the modern era of super hero movies.
His imprint on Smallville was great
I like to fly like superman and he is my best friend always
I've should have been in that movie with you my beloved cousin❤
only thing i liked about superman 4 is that it had superman fighting and opponent who had powers like him
Superman 2 had that too.
I didn't know that Christopher Reeve direct this movie. Wonderful work. Rest in peace Christopher Reeve
0:10 he must of been thinking "wtf am I filming?"
the only thing that I could ever ask Christopher Reeve about Superman for would be once a question. What the hell were you thinking?
He had bold ideas, he just got into bed with the wrong people, the producers had no integrity.
Reeve: Felt pretty good
Reeve's inner thoughts: I'm fucked, this is awful
Christopher Reeve was such an immense man. More of a Superman than his character!
Rated bad in it's day but looks better now than ever before...
This guy acted so philosophical. Just say I did it because it was my largest paycheck.
Chris said in his book, Still Me, "The less said about Superman 4 the better."
he must be very disappointed. :(
This’ll sound corner because yes as an adult I can see the many issues this film had but as a child it was my first superhero movie I watched and boy did I watch it, over and over.
