    This IS my dream car. A first year R/T challenger with the 426 hemi.

    My 1970 Challenger R/T 440+6 pak smoked every Hemi I ever raced. The Hemi's were alot slower off the line. My car ran a 10:93 back in 1973 at S.I.R. in Kent.

    I ordered a 1970 Challenger from the factory. It had the RT package, the rally package and was outfitted with a 383 Magnum engine, Black vinyl roof, 4 speed with pistol grip shifter, AC, AM-FM-8track radio. I had them delete the strips. Boy would it go. Dark blue. Sure wish I still had it.

      Man, that sounds like a really nice R/T you had.

      We all wish we still had one of our first cars. Especially if 5 of them were Mopars!@@moparguy0839

      A 3 speed manual was also available , but rarely ordered, on engines up to the 383. A friend had a '70 'Cuda 340, loaded - A/C, electric windows, 8 track, fog lights - and that strange shifter with the black knob ; a 3 speed( supposedly less than 2% production).

    These things are passed the "affordable" range now. One in drivable condition will set you back $20k and that is for a '73-'74 that has lived a rough life.

    I have a 70 RT 383 4 speed that was ordered new in my home town. Had a TA until a few years ago.

    God I just love the late 60s and early 70s American muscle cars. I prefer the understated ones without the bulges and superchargers sticking out of the bonnet (hood - yes I'm British). Some of the best looking and genuinely fast cars of all time.

    The car you see is worth a fortune! Only 137 Challenger R/T 426 hardtops built with 4 speed pistol grip HURST shifter. That's why I call a car like this "rolling real estate."👍👍😎

    He forgot to mention a bunch of engine options.. you could actually get NINE different engines on this beast in 1970...198, 225 sixes, 318, 340, 340 4-barrel, 340 6-barrel, 383, 383 magnum, 440, 440 magnum, 440 6-barrel and the HEMI... I know that's more than nine, but you get the picture! I own one now and what an AWESOME car it is!

    • @Scalihoo
      @Scalihoo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those engines weren't available in the R/T in 1970 though , You could get the 383, 440 4v, 440 6 pack & Hemi . No 1970 340 R/T's were available BUT you could order an A66 340 & the T/A package . . In 71 Challenger sales fell off because you couldn't get the 440 4 barrel & the 383 had lower compression than it did in 1970 . the 440 6 pack & the Hemi. were still available in 71.

      @@Scalihoo Thank you for that Al but I was actually talking about the "Challenger" in general, not the R/T specifically

      @@JamesMoore-un3cu I've been brushing up on MOPAR history lately figured I'd chime in, my older brother had a plum crazy 440 R/T back in the 70's ..fond memories , pretty sure my next toy will be a MOPAR after mostly Vettes, Mustang, Camaros etc. Never had a cool MOPAR & now i can afford one so I'm chomping at the bit to get one..

    • @musclecarsyndicate

      Skipped the A66 340 Performance Package. It's the only way to get a 340, without it being a T/A, in 1970. No 340 R/T in 1970.

    Lots of after market parts now..... It's better, but not like owning a GM or Fomoco, 20 years ago parts were pretty much non existant

    Rust repairs over rust. To me, and the reason you couldn't give these Mopar's away 20-30 years ago (living in New England back then) was they were so rust prone. The joke "on a quite night you can hear them rust", was probably coined from these cars (and trucks--where are the 60-70's trucks comparatively?). What has changed? I can't spend that kind of money on a vehicle that you can't drive in the rain and is a "garage queen". All cars/trucks rusted, but the Mopars seemed to be excessive. Am I wrong on this? Does anyone know why? Same reason the 70-90 Nissan/Datsun and Toyota pickups rusted quickly; cheap steel? They sure did fly when they were new!

      +srnad88 There is TONS of old mopars out west, but we don't use salt on our roads.

    • @srnad88
      @srnad88 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I've been out here in the Seattle area for 12 years now, and I'm just not seeing them like the GM's and Fords. Particularly the trucks. I'm seeing so many antique GM and Ford trucks for sale. Where are the Mopars? I hardly ever see them at meets; forget about a short bed. I'd like to have one with a 318 just for the rarity of it. Challengers and Chargers--forget it. Priced way out of a normal mans ball park anymore.

      Starting in 1969 Detroit used recycled steel and everything rusted, I new a ford salesman that sold a new Torino spring of 1970 and sent it to Ziebart for rust proofing but they refused, the car set on the lot from fall 1969 and the trunk had holes in the panels where the trunk floor went down to meet the fender. That and the low compression starting in 1971 really boosted sales of Japanese cars.

    You forgot to mention the R/T S/E model... And no they din't build them for only 4 years, they build them for 5. Now count with me (use your fingers). First year 1970, second year 1971, third year 1972, fourth year 1973 and finally 1974. That's FIVE years "Mr. Challenger Expert" with a voice like a Muppet.
