Just got my Mali, at 8weeks....i am super happy with her and within a few days she was ready for gentle training, sits, follows, lay down etc. She just seems so so eager to please already, she comes everywhere we me and will continue to do so her whole life. Already we have been training her, taking her to sit outside the local super market, the noises of the trucks, random people etc, doesn't phase her at all. After just a few minutes outside, she was calm, relax and non reactive to loud noises. A long road ahead of us, but a fun filled life of growth and exercise, but completely aware it is ME who will need to rise to the challenge.
I spend at least 3 hours a day with my Melinois. She is 11 months old, very active, I have got a big yard, she is learning so many new things. she is super intelligent. I am so happy with her.
Love my Maligator. When he decides to chew on my arm/hand, that is the time for a quick 15 min training session. His biting stops for a few hours until his "batteries" recharge from a quick nap. I absolutely agree, if you don't have the time to work this breed, the Belgian Malinois is not the dog for you.
I feel your pain. Add to arm and hand chewing, butt biting and ear nibbling. Still the dog's given me more than I I've given it. I sat in front of a computer for 15 years. I've traded that for 2 mile walks every morning.
Thank you! Your method was amazing! I corrected my puppy malinois's food aggression problem! Within a week! Working on correcting the biting problem now.
For inexperienced owners of Mallinois a CAUTIONARY TALE!!! Many working line Malinois do not calm down... Even as they age... Be certain that a Belgian Malinois is the dog you need... NOT WANT! European bred Malinois are Super Explosive. 👍🇬🇧
We adopted a rescue whom the vet and trainer told us is a Mal/GSD mix. He is around 12 months old and what a handful! We were fortunate to find a board and train program locally and they specialize in GSDs and Mals BUT as soon as we got him back home some of his undesirable behaviors started creeping back in despite hours of daily play and training and I wasn’t sure how to handle this. I’m SO thankful to have found your channel today! I am devouring your videos and looking forward to learning all I can do our boy can become a reliably trained member of our family! Thank you again!
Wow, Robert that was great combining multiple Malinois questions and answers in one video, especially very important ones. I always look forward to your videos so much information
A much needed video. I really don't think people fully understand how much work any high drive breed is. With Zed ( not an average Collie ) I have spent every day for the last 2 years training every thing and ,behaviour modification to stop Pica, chasing . She is now the best Service, support, medical assistance and protection dog ,but it takes work. I've trained dogs for 46 years and sadly things have changed vastly with the introduction of the internet. I think people see highly trained Malinois and think it is easy. My Zed is a total high drive girl who's grand sire was 2nd in the world at herding ,so you can imagine what that is like with a full mouth bite. She bit loads ,drawing blood every day as a pup. I think impulse control is so important and I agree the down command is important. Brilliant advice here Robert. If I was younger and healthy I'd love a Mali but we ,as humans need to be realistic. I know another trainer who's Mali has broken it's back teeth chewing to get out of the crate. Unfulfilled I think . Thanks for all your insightful knowledge. : ) Thank you : )
HI Laura, I am the first to admit I did not fully grasp what "immense drive" meant when we got our Labrador puppy. He's exciting and frustrating at the same time. I could not do it without Robert's guidance!
Once again Robert, as usual, great video! I have a service dog who is the German Shepherd. I am going to be getting another one in about 2 years and am soaking up information like a sponge so that I am good and ready when I finally start training the new puppy! Your videos are so informative and I cannot express how much I appreciate that you are doing this work and sharing it with the rest of us!
4 month old Tervuren... Pretty much the same dog. I knew what we were getting (though her mom that picked her did not). She gets worked and is a very quick learner. These are helpful videos. Thanks
I have an Australian Cattle Dog. Initially when we went jogging, she would bolt the leash at the sight of cats, dogs, birds, squirrels. Every single time she did that, I stopped, turned her over on her back, put one hand on her chest, the other, a two finger light pinch on her neck and held that position till she relaxed. Then we would continue jogging. After 3-4 times of the correction, she stopped bolting from my side. She still turns her head now and whines but, stuck to my side as we jog right past with no pulling. 9 years later and still jogging, zero bolting.
Your training videos have helped med a lot in bonding with my two years old Malinois - Spirit. Thank you very much for first class instructions!! Michael from Sweden
I rescued a Malinois from a family that wanted to put him on the streets, he was chained to a tree and had never been outside of this house. He was and still is in bad shape, i just rescued him 2 days ago. I had no idea what type of dog he was until now. We are going to make sure he is healthy and so far he is so loving to us and is learning very quick which i am very impressed with his intelligence. He is about a year and half old. Today he is going to have his vaccines and grooming done. We are also planning to take him to obedience classes and potty training since he will have access to indoor. If you guys have any advice for us please we will appreciate it. I am doing lots of research to understand this guy better.
Malinois have varied temperaments like most breeds. I have had super protective Mals that I could only socialize with strict obedience training and others that were more laid back and relatively easy to socialize.
Awesome! I'm so happy you're doing dedicated videos on working dogs. I love all your videos and will be using your methods when I get my boy in 6 weeks. If I could thumbs up your videos more than once I would. Good job emphasising the amount of dedication and effort required with working dogs too. I think it's incredibly important that people realise how much is involved before they commit.
As always another great video Mr Cabral! I have been sharing a lot of them with my daughter who has a seven month old Siberian Husky. I even tell people I meet at Home Depot and Lowes about your youtube and instagram sites. Keep the Q&A coming and as always a pleasure learning from you.
We have had 2 Tervurens over the years, unbelievable dogs. Proper socialization and lots of training and exercise are essential. A quick walk before work and a few minutes after work will not be enough. The dog will be unhappy and so will you, they have to be challenged. But if you can put in that time you will have a great dog.
I've been wanted a malinois for a couple years now, i have the opportunity rn and i'm trying to educate myself as much as i can. It's not my first dog howsoever but i haven't had a malinois yet, and its funny to hear the "you need to be experienced" like how am i supposed to be if i's gonna be my first experience lol
New Sub. New Mali member with 2 high drive Australian blue heelers that are very well trained and highly intelligent. Maya the Mali is very different from the heelers I am finding out. She never takes her eyes off us and only 10 weeks old. I look forward to learning everything I can from you. I thank you for taking the time to educate us.
Love this type of segment. I comment a lot on your channel. My female Mal is 8 months old. I do just about everything you say to do as well as what my pro trainer has trained me to do with my dog. I love my puppy. Is she a handful? Yes. Does she require tremendous amounts of attention? Yes. Is she a beautiful specimen of Mal? Yes. Does she make me laugh and frustrated almost simultaneously? Yes. You know what? I don't care. Best dog I've ever had. Phenomenal animal. I knew what I was getting myself into. Before acquiring the dog we had a family meeting. We discussed all these aspects. I consulted with friends who are military and LEO's to get their opinions and recs about this breed. I was fully aware. This dog has brought my family together as we train her together, we travel together, we walk her together... It has been awesome. Thank you for your time and help with training. You have been awesome. Seriously. I recommend your videos to everyone. 👍😎😁💪🤜🤛
I train and breed West Germany working line German Shepherds. Most people have no idea how to handle a strong high drive dog. It isn't hard, you just need to learn how to do it. Rather than go to someone to teach them, too many people resort to stupid training. Not fair for the dogs.
I like your advice we just a month ago after looking carefully what kind of dog that we want In the past we had 3 German schepards at out farm very easy dogs The malinois is completely different Now we have it at home to sociolize with us children and our 2 chiwhawa mixes but every day we go to the farm where he will spend the rest of his life Lots of room and space it's not a house dog Just now seen your video And we already been doing the for the last month like you explained And when 6 months old extensive training course It's needed It's not a dog for beginners you really have to be in to it and have a lot of time and space Thanks for your video we are on the right track Best regards
I'm an accidental Mal mom. Long weird story in a neighborhood that collects 'tough dogs.' Love of my life. Nothing will cure you ADHD faster than being forced to create a strict routine and training a few times a day with your working dawg. These videos help a lot! Be warned, new mal companions.
wow it's so true, and the distractions, you pick them up quicker than your dog so that you have time to react before the dog does. great to just go a big long wander with though. I went for 1 with my adult son & came home with 2! so much work cos we train separately.
I rescued a 12 month old male 1/2 pure GSD & 1/2 BM. First owners couldn't handle him. He's a biter , barker but it's not bad. He's my best buddy , gets along fine with other dogs, he was raised with a cat so he doesn't care about them. Raised many GSD's he's different but it's going OK. Totally leash trained, house trained, can sit, shake, spin, lay down, fetch, speak ,loves swimmimg I think I lucked out with my Gus !
Thank you so much for starting this series. I like to watch Master Paw and his dog Rocky but I watch all of your content as well. I have a 3 month old male Belgian pup who is going to be a Veteran service dog. Please post as much as you can so I can follow along with this perfectly convenient time in parallel for you teaching this and me having the pup. God bless you warrior, thank you for what you do!
Robert, what is the difference between German Shepherds and Goofy? Malinois? All my life if I got the chance to actually chose my own pedigreed dog it would have been German Shepherd. Goofy gives me heart palpitations! The older he gets the more breath taking. I made my hubby watch you giving a lecture with Goofy hanging out. Pointing out the tone and level of your voice, the calmness, the no big deal, but always vigilant when communicating always consistent always knowing that when your dog messes up IT IS THE HUMAN'S FAULT. ALWAYS!!
Great video as always. A lot of this applies to Rotties Shepard etc. Wish i would have had this info available for my first Rottie that was a 16 month old rescue and grew up with no rules 😆 it would have made it a lot easier. They might not be as high energy as a Mal but can have a lot of the same problems if not trained properly.
I had 2 Malinois--one was killed by motorcycle. Neither was food aggresive. Just about every other issue he listed, we have dealt with. Real issue was with cats and wanting to play with other dogs. Our solution is to just love them and warn people unless you have the time and energy, do not get one.
Yes, my 8 months female Malinois also is wanting to play other dog so it’s always is the big deal to pull her down, some treats to let her pay attention to me.
Thank you for your videos. My significant has a line on a Mali. I'm trying to discourage the purchase because of all the reasons. Professional training, commitment and other critters. We have cats, dog (Rottweiler), chickens and me (I have my own "crazy" energy I'm told).
Good understanding and acceptance of dog social behaviour and socialization of your malinoi toward dog and human are critical as are mental stimulation and plenty of exercise every day. ATTEND DOG PUPPY SCHOOL ! A crate is normally necessary to prevent your malinoi pupy from biting electric cable or chewing shoes ..we did not have a crate but we are six people at home so there was always somebody to look after .
I have a Kangal and he growled at my daughter when she walked by his bowl. So what I did was empty his bowl and just grabbed a handful of food and put it in his bowl then he'd eat and repeat that. Once I felt comfortable with him I had my daughter start doing that. (I stood in between them at first) Worked like a charm. He only ever growled that one time. I think by him seeing us putting the food in his bowl he understood we weren't there to take the food.
My neighbor has a Malinois (around a year old) and she's not really as aggressive as I expected her to be. I guess socialization at an early age plays a great role in its behavior.
Great video! I think an important question that all Malinois owners would benefit hearing more about is how can you tire a young dog when they're growing and physically draining them is not possible. You touched on a few elements like crating and working engagement when you take them out but I think a focused answer to this will benefit many inexperienced malinois handlers.
So informative video and comments. Will not proceed to get a Malinois now. ..a crate is only way to train biting? really??... Sounds more like you are training a wild animal !... I am from gundog training background and wanting a malinois/GSD but after watching this and reading the comments feel it is a dog with too much aggression hence needing specialist training. Hope most people wanting one realise the dedication needed for the particular breed you wish to have....thanks for the video..very helpful..
Just subscribed for your channel, I like people who know what they’re talking about and it seems you are pretty knowledgeable and an expert in the world of canines. I’ve always had big breed working dogs, live on a large property and plenty of space for them to run around, by any chance do you know or recommend any reliable breeder that does half German shepherd half Melinois?
Robert. I've owned Belgian Sheepdogs for years, and have helped Malinois rescue, we've never seen so many Mals in the shelters as we do now. I am so glad I found your videos, I really like your common sense approach.
i had 2 great cattle dogs, highly trained and equally loved. Both were frizbee trick dogs. we also did fun shows at the local assisted living facilities. Thinking about making the transition to a Malenois. I would work my dogs before and after my day job. during the day, my wife is home but not much of a teacher, kinda dog mom. Do you think this schedule will be OK for a Malenois?
I have a 9 week old Belgian Malinois Dutch Shepherd mix. Her mother was a non working Belgian and her dad was a protection train Dutch Shepherd. I’ve been trying to train her to come when called but I’ve been having some issues. Was wondering what’s the best way to get her to listen to me? Thank you.
Put the food in the bowl, let him see and smell it. Take it back and you eat something, an apple a piece of jerky or a hand full of nuts anything. He will watch you eat the whole time and when your done put his down. Alphas eat first. This tactic works well with Akita’s. They are pretty food aggressive and dominant
Robert, Great video once again! Thank You! I hear it a lot, " require a lot of time" "Enormous time commitment" etc... Could you please quantify this? I had a great ownership experience with a Siberian Huskey, 14yrs never stopped training, schooling and playing (re-enforcing Training). This worked out to a realistic 1-1 1/2 hours a day spread across two to three sessions. This doesn't include just hanging out together. I am trying to decide if I want a Malinois or mix. Thanks Again, you are my go to coach !!
Grew up with working sled dogs, primarily Siberians, Alaskans, and Wolf hybrids. Working shepherds are equivalent energy level with a much great level of mental stimulation requirements. I personally find them easier overall as the mental stimulation properly engaged leads to high level training whereas mushing dogs are very independent. But the overall time required is higher IMO.
I know this video is older so you most likely won't answer me, but I was given a puppy. I was told she was shepherd and husky mixed. She is a malinois. I was not expecting this handful. She is an amazing dog though and I would really like to work with her. I need a little more than the usual sit, down, stay, etc. Is there something more advanced I could do with her? We don't have a lot of good trainers in our area and I have trained Alaskan Malamutes for weight pulling and backpacking in previous years. I love this pup but she is a bit much with three teenage boys, a shepherd, a pit mix, and a papillon mix. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. I found it funny I went from one Mal (malamute) to another Mal (Malinois).
by satisfy you mean tire it out ? I’m hoping so which then it would be 2-3 hours a day of exercise some people incorporate the training session time into that as well but it varies depending on the dog itself.
I have 7 month old male mix of German Shepard + Malinois, that I found on street 3 weeks a go. He was afraid of everyone and everything! I gave him food and water, he started to follow me so I took him home and named him Milo. I don't know the exact age of his... And I have a cat, too. Let's just say, that she's more vicious and can scare him away, just by growling at him, if he on her way.
“Beany” is my year old Half Siberian/half Malinois. I have lots of experience with huskies but none w Malinois. She was in a puppy farm crate until I rescued her at 4 months. She is very smart and alert at home. At class, she does an anxious warning whine and tries to hide behind the water cooler at class if a stranger dog gets near. She is in her first time obedience/life skills class with a fuzzy type of goofy shepherd, 2 labs, and 2 goldens. She does ok with home training but can be demanding which I ignore. She is ok with our other 3 dogs, but is some what aggressive chasing playing tag with my Siberian (therapy dog) purebred in our large exercise pen (100x60’). I put her on leash when she gets overly excited. What is your best advice to help her in obedience class? I am encouraging and reward for steps forward (aka walking instead of slinking). She does not like to “down” in class but is ok at home training. Please help this NH dog lover. I used to sled dog race when younger, (before kids) I worked for veterinarians and had a pet sitting business for 15 years and am now am semi-retired and just love dogs. from NH, JoDe.
I have a Belgian malinois for about a year she came from a good home but it got to much for the previous owners, I got her when she was one year old. She is well behaved and enjoys running and jumping but we have a little girl (human) that wants to play all the time which Sadie (the dog) loves to play but she want play tug and will not take food from your hand. any suggestions. we live on a farm and she helps with the cows (the dog) not the girl, I'm working on that one.
First of all your info is great really like super great cos I even don’t have a dog right now and still watch your videos. I use to have a dobermann and many other dogs. My boyfriend has. Belgian Malinois he is 10 yers now when I come to his house he have to put his dog away cos he growl at me. He even got to me and wanted to bite but my boyfriend kept saying stop no so he didn’t do it. When we last toke hem with the other dog to walk off leash he came next to us but didn’t try to get me at all. I wonder if he acts like this cos it’s his home ? And why he doesn’t make eye contact with me thank u very much
Friend. Im getting a puppy Belgian Malinois in 4 weeks. What prep courses do you recommend me to take? Id like to have the best environment for him and also understand what basics and foundations I can start applying since day 1.
I do not disagree with what you said about the crate for controling drive but it seems to me a bit odd to try to control biting with a crate and have to spend a year doing it (having to do it that long makes it quite obvious that the method is not effective). It just seems like crate is missing the point with that behavior. I have trained my puppy not to bite family members using a muzzle with far greater success. Whenever she would become too obsessed with biting she would get to wear the muzzle for a bit until she calmed down and she stopped doing that specific behavior. I also balance that out with bite games so that she understands when it is ok and when it isn't. I think this method is far more effective for bite control than crating is because it addresses a specific behavior in a specific situation.
If crate effects biting could it be unknowingly altering other dog psyche. Crate as catch can for quick answer to what have you. Bite is more or less chew. Could directed chew over time help displace undesired bite ? Worth a try maybe.
The crate is contain the dog until it matures and so that it can practice to be in a calm state of mind as a juvenile to set him up for success as an adult.
Martin K. Schröder I agree with you, have not tried the crate , the two male labs we have destroyed their crates . Separated the siblings while we moved ,one w/ us one went w/the daughter, when we tried to just visit it was game on male aggression , I am 6'7 275lbs and it was all I could do to keep control of five dogs and I raised for the most part four of them , but you are right the was my only tool besides a stick , I made the muzzle work.
Thank u for this comment bro I’m getting my mal Wednesday and didn’t want to put him in a crate at all to much.. but when he brought that up I wasn’t to inspired to try it this is a much better method and I look forward to using it
Hi Robert, what is your opinion on boarding working dogs when going out of town? We have a 1.5yr old malinois and work hard on training obedience, focus & engagement. Would our training be set back by boarding her at a place which has allows dogs to free roam with each other? I'm not a fan of allowing her to interact with dogs I don't know but I'm worried we don't have many options when going out of town. Thanks - love and like all the videos!
Oh my goodness I’m very worried now. My dad recently bought a German Shepherd pup (4 months old, name is Rex) and it was a super in the moment purchase! It only took him about an hour to decide (and my little sisters didn’t want to take no for an answer) I don’t think he’s done any research at all on this breed and he has never owned his own dog all his life till now! So because my dad works a lot (and I do not live with my dad I only visit on weekends) he has sent Rex away to my grandpa’s house in hopes of getting Rex potty trained and stuff. Now my grandpa owns two chihuahuas and they are decently obedient so I wasn’t too worried, but it sounds like a German Shepherd needs way more attention, care, and teaching than what my grandpa will be able to give him. I want to teach Rex myself so badly and help in the training process but I’ll only be able to on weekends and that probably won’t be affective at all. My dad only plans to have Rex sent away for at least a month (it’s only been one week so far) I just hope that nothing goes wrong and Rex will end up alright in the end. I feel so bad for not being able to put my all into raising this beautiful pup I feel unworthy and useless.
I have a question. My two year old male Malinois is gentle towards other dogs and people and behaves very well out in public, however, when a specific family member of my neighbors comes out to the back yard, our dog pushes on the fence and starts barking at them. We remember that this specific member would spray water in his face when he was a puppy. Ever since then, we can't stop him from pushing on the fence and barking at them. It's only that one person. What can we do?
Sir..when i walked with my 6 months malenois,we usually encounter some unleashed neighborhood dogs,is it ideal to pass tru them or going back to our safer area?
Robert, we adopted our 3-4 year malinois 2 years ago we cant seem to keep him from running away when off leash we've tried everything to keep him engaged with us, we want to be able to take him places he also has a high drive from birds and cats. He is barks at other dogs and will attack if they react in a negative way towards him. what can we do about this!?! for the most part he is a calm dog and hes great with his 3 yr old German Shep brother. thank you for the great videos.
I would like to ask a question for one of your question and answer sessions. I have a yellow labrador and I made the mistake of making his first road trips way too exciting. Now he constantly whines while in the car when going anywhere. Is there anything I can do to get his anxiety/excitement level down?
Mr Cabral, A Sheepoo is an English Sheep Dog × Poodle . If it's.spelled Shepoo ( first syllable pronounced Shep), it may be a GSD * poodle, but if spelled Shih-poo, it's a Shih tzu × Miniature Poodle more than likely. A Malinois × Poodle cross is called a Malipoo/Mali-Poo.
Thanks Robert for your videos. Its always something to learn from you. If i could ask a question. Do you think a malinois should be crated at nights for his entire life, or only until he is an adult? My mal is currently 15 months and crated when we are out of the house or sleeping.
Hello Robert, so I have never had a dog in a crate. Dalmatian, Blue healers, Siberian, Pitstiff, I will now have two Mali’s. I really appreciate your videos, I do have a full time job but my wife and I have different schedules. I am dedicated to making these pure bred Mali’s lifetime Companion’s. They don’t really have an off button. I will watch all your videos, since I have two at the end of June. Any advice with integration with my 7 yr old 60 lb Coyote mutt great dog? Thank you in advance. Mark
I never rated my malinois and Ave had him since 8 weeks old, I used “replacement” to tackle the biting issue. I just replace my hand for “approved toy”, he learned in less than a month.
I work at a boarding and daycare kennel and we have two working malinois. They are both police dogs: one is an attack dog and another is a drug sniffer. They are fantastic but the drug sniffing dog is a bit difficult sometimes. She doesn’t like going back into her room. We have started using the treats her owner gave us to encourage her to go back in. We make her sit, give her the treat and take the lead off. We tell her to stay and leave. Is there another method that you would recommend that is more suited to the breed?
Please give me any advice , in what order you teach stuff to your puppy? For example: 1st thing: their name Then next: sit Next: come Just want a pro opinion.
I know that malinois were bred to be herding dogs, but people only use them for protection and sporting and the Like, is there anywhere I can go to learn more about that part of them?
I have a 5 year old I got at the shelter when he was 12 weeks old. He looked like a German Shepherd puppy but while my husband was walking him a lady came running out of her house to see the dog. She was so excited, she said he was a Belgian Shepherd and she used to breed them. Whatever he is we adore him but he is scary smart...he seems to know what we are thinking before we say it out loud and he is very strong! By the time he was 6 months old he we took him to obedience school because he was so high energy and in need of discipline! My question is this....he is extremely nervous around appliances such as my convection oven and washing machine and lets us know by his behavior way before a thunderstorm starts...we don’t know wether he’s hearing things we don’t but we aren’t big on giving him tranquilizers for laundry and cooking and thunderstorms. Do you have any suggestions? We have a fenced backyard but he wants to be where we are.
I got a 2 months old BM puppy back in the Philippines at the moment and my sister is the one taking care of him.. I can't wait to be w/ him but it will take 2 more years before I'll have my vacation and how many days do I need for my dog to be aquainted and be comfortable with me as I handle and try to teach him some tricks?
Hello Mr. C, new subscriber here! I really enjoyed this video and the information you provided. While I do not own a Malinois, I do own an Australian Cattle Dog (or Blue Heeler as they are more commonly referred to) she is absolutely my best friend, and one of the most loyal dogs I have ever known. The journey with her has been a bumpy one at times. I am not a professional trainer and have never attempted to train a dog previously beyond like sit and lie down. Very early on with Willow I decided to dig much deeper than that. I was able to teach her many commands, but unfortunately, despite knowing a good deal she would ignore me unless she felt like doing whatever I was asking. I should also mention that I am wheelchair-bound currently which has made it all the more tricky. But I'm stubborn or determined lol and and I have always gone out of my way to provide whatever she needed... as in vigorous exercise and mental stimulation. I work with her everyday and refused to give up. I got her with a trainer who has helped me make leaps and bounds with her. She now not only loves me more than anything but also listens better than ever before. However, recently she has developed an issue of reactivity with me around other dogs and people. Meaning, while she loves other dogs and people, she gets very testy if they come too close to me. I should mention that this behavior is probably my fault because even though I socialized her well from a young age I never imagined that how close a person was to me could be a problem so I never went out of my way to work on having a person get really close to me around her until we realized we had an issue. The trainer that I work with seems to think that this could both be a combination of resource guarding and overprotection. She has never resource guarded anything from me as in food or anything like that. Instead it seems like she's guarding me as the resource itself. She doesn't seem to want to out-and-out fight or hurt anything, animal or human. It seems more like a herding type behavior. Attempting to herd people or other animals away from me. She will nip only with this behavior, but has never broke skin or even left a red mark. Although, I know that this does not justify the behavior at all. I both like and trust the trainer that we work with... I am simply wondering if you have ever seen or worked on a behavior like this? How would you go about dealing with it if you don't mind my asking? I should mention that Willow is now 1.5 years old if that information is relevant. I apologize I know that was a lot. Thank you so much for your videos!
Can you do a video on what to tell people when they ask, “what kind of dog is that?” I been telling people mines a German shepherd mixed with a deer . . Guess I grew tired of explaining Malinois and it’s pronunciation to everyone who enquired
I had a female malinois x german shepard/beauceron. A huge bread who did calm down by three years old. She passed from bloat at 5 years old , so i decided to adopt an 18 month old malinois. He had been abandonned by 2 previous owners, and was in foster care. Everything went fine for the first visit. So I adopted him. 4 days into my "trail" period we went on a walk , he nipped my leg I said no, put him back on my right hand side, the then bit my leg and went into I would say attack mode circling me and bit my shoulder tried to go for my neck and face, 30 mins later finaly got him away by throwing a stick , and he went back to cuddly normal self. Now he has been took back by the foster family, as the bites were quite bad but , he was being walked 4 times a day i do work 7/8 hours a day where he was indoors. Monday tuesday wed no problem thursday night coming home from work is when he flipped. Could this be from being indoors for 8 hours, or is this a sign he had been mal treated by his first two female owners? I am not hesitant on getting another mali, even though my female cross was amazing well trained, stubborn yes but was fine at home while at work . this "turning" has made me question is this the bread for me or if i get another pup could i end up having my throat ripped out....
Hi and thanks for your vid I’ve a boy mal he’s 5 month old he does the normal kinda stuff basic commands is he to old to learn him more intense training? He runs up to my Mrs and bites her wrist only gently and same to me when we’ve been out and come home I think it’s a comfort thing he also jumps up at people he’s not aggressive in any way unless the Hoover is out goes crazy then please can you help with some advice Thanks
My under socialized 5 month old Mal is good with me but when outside he’s very aggressive toward people and dogs. Is professional training going to fix that? Ive been training him by myself every single day, ( rescued him a month ago) he learns quickly and very food motivated. He learned to sleep in his crate in 2 days. I only take him out of his crate for going outside, or some cuddle, play time which is 30-40 mins. But his aggression toward people and dogs on walks very frustrates me 😭😭😭
Just got my Mali, at 8weeks....i am super happy with her and within a few days she was ready for gentle training, sits, follows, lay down etc.
That describes my day. I know it's time to go outside and play when she is at full nut level.
Soo it's best if you have a farm . It can be a herding dog .
👍🇬🇧
they are like machines
cerberusk9uk I’ve a 5 month old boy and is it to late to train him
We adopted a rescue whom the vet and trainer told us is a Mal/GSD mix.
Robert Cabral, thank you so much for your free videos, you are literally a life saver.
My pleasure.
Love this video. Especiallybtheblast questions as I have 2 10 week old mali. I've been doing all of the same.
Yeah, but despite them both being Belgian shepherds, a Terv is a totally different ballgame from a Mal.
I did that with my Rottweiler I hand fed him for 6 weeks to change behaviour the other owner taught him I was source of food and fun
👍
AMEN
Well said.
I love the structured obedience
I like your advice we just a month ago after looking carefully what kind of dog that we want
In the past we had 3 German schepards at out farm very easy dogs
The malinois is completely different
Now we have it at home to sociolize with us children and our 2 chiwhawa mixes but every day we go to the farm where he will spend the rest of his life
Lots of room and space it's not a house dog
Just now seen your video
And we already been doing the for the last month like you explained
And when 6 months old extensive training course
It's needed
It's not a dog for beginners you really have to be in to it and have a lot of time and space
Thanks for your video we are on the right track
Best regards
Raised many GSD's
he's different but it's going OK. Totally leash trained, house trained, can sit, shake, spin, lay down, fetch, speak ,loves swimmimg
I think I lucked out with my Gus !
Thank you. From my recent adoption of a 1 y/o long hair gsd.
Looking forward to the working dog episodes. Thanks Robert great stuff!
Thank you so, so much for this series :) I will be using your tips for sure :)
Thank you for your videos. My significant has a line on a Mali. I'm trying to discourage the purchase because of all the reasons. Professional training, commitment and other critters. We have cats, dog (Rottweiler), chickens and me (I have my own "crazy" energy I'm told).
Good luck. Won’t be a good match.
@@RobertCabralDogs Yeah, I know wasn't my choice. But such is life.
Awesome info brother luv the way you share your knowledge
Excellent video, all that advice can help all dogs.
Very good, easy to understand and follow, advice. THUMBS UP!
I really enjoy all of your videos!! You have helped me so much with our German Shepherd dog!
Great info
Maligators :-)
I like your feedback your very direct and to the point! I respect and appreciate you for that! I own two Dutchies...
Thinking
about making the transition to a Malenois. I would work my dogs before
and after my day job. during the day, my wife is home but not much of a
teacher, kinda dog mom. Do you think this
schedule will be OK for a Malenois?
I was waiting for this! Love this video! This video helps me out THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!
I have a 1 year old German Shepherd, can you do some German shepherd training videos. Love your work.
Another great video Robert I look forward to the updates.
Michael
the Belgian Malinois has always bin my fav dog but would you recommend me getting one if I am moving alone to a new place for college
NO
Robert, Great video once again!
"Don't put Fooey and Yuck together", lmao 😂
My Belgian melinois training by me only she is very energetic and fully protected to our kids and also good obidience
how many hours it takes in a day to satisfy a working line gsd or malanois ?
by satisfy you mean tire it out ? I’m
hoping so which then it would be 2-3 hours a day of exercise some people incorporate the training session time into that as well but it varies depending on the dog itself.
Love this idea! Thank you for all you do!!!
Sm of the best advice I hv heard. It highlights sm mistakes I made with my gs
Good info!
Thank you for addressing so many issues in this video! :)
I would like to ask a question for one of your question and answer sessions. I have a yellow labrador and I made the mistake of making his first road trips way too exciting. Now he constantly whines while in the car when going anywhere. Is there anything I can do to get his anxiety/excitement level down?
Mr Cabral,
A Sheepoo is an English Sheep Dog × Poodle .
My mal is currently 15 months and crated when we are out of the house or sleeping.
no, i'll address it in an upcoming video
Thanks Robert.
Mark
I have a Catahoula. Thank you for doing this!
For example:
1st thing: their name
Then next: sit
Next: come
Just want a pro opinion.
Thank you for giving us knowledge about trains our dog👌🏻✌🏻
Thanks Robert.
Should I nuter my blue healer?
Can you do a video on what to tell people when they ask, “what kind of dog is that?”
I been telling people mines a German shepherd mixed with a deer . . Guess I grew tired of explaining Malinois and it’s pronunciation to everyone who enquired
or a GSD mixed with a coyote
When my dobie would bite me I use to give him his Toy and play with him till he was tired worked fine for me
Good video.

Which is the best dry food for malinois puppy I’m feeding him blue buffalo right now but I’m trying to buy the best food for him?
I like acana, orijen and Merrick. Also hearing good things about Lucy dog food.
Ok thank u so much for replying to me. I really appreciate it
Best of best
My under socialized 5 month old Mal is good with me but when outside he’s very aggressive toward people and dogs.
Is professional training going to fix that?
Ive been training him by myself every single day, ( rescued him a month ago) he learns quickly and very food motivated. He learned to sleep in his crate in 2 days. I only take him out of his crate for going outside, or some cuddle, play time which is 30-40 mins.
But his aggression toward people and dogs on walks very frustrates me 😭😭😭
