    I'm excited to try these techniques. We thought we adopted a black German Shepherd, but folks that saw him suspected he is actually a Belgium Malinios. He was only biting and nipping me so that's why I'm here. I will get him into obedience training, but really need to get the biting under control. Thank you for the guidance.

    We had a malinois for 13 yrs and LOVED him so much. On our 2nd who's 4 months old. Exercise and work for the dog has been key for us, and consistency. Every person that meets him has to stand up and say no bite every single time he bites even if playful. Always have different toys for them to give them something else to bite. Tennis balls are a huge savior for this dog too. Lastly, we work with him on different commands daily.

    This was very helpful. I correct the behavior with a "no", but I was not redirecting. I am going to add the redirection, and praising when he is chewing his toys, and hopefully overtime the biting will subside.

    To everyone who is saying this video was too long and had too much useless information:
    Would you rather have someone take the time to show you how to use a stove, pots, pans, and other cooking tools so you KNOW how to cook or would you rather them just teach you how to make an egg? Funny analogy maybe, but the point is that sometimes its better to pay attention and take the time to learn how and why something works instead of just scratching the surface.

    I recieved a high energy dog (1 yr old) who was too agressive for an owner's toddler. Along with a bag of hi-pro food, we now were faced with getting nipped every time we got near him. He was needy and desired us yet couldn't curb the "painful" nip! Twice in a couple months we ran out of the hi-pro food and fed him the old beagle's food "fit n trim" (discontinued) and after the second time of just a few days different food we noticed a huge difference, no biting and calmer demeanor. Around that time I watched a court case about a dog that had defaced a child while standing right behind his owner! The lawyer who cleaned up for the child asked the owner did he ever research that dog's food and the agressive behaviour that comes from hi-protein food? He produced proof and we suddenly understood the change in our dog, food change! no more biting! Happier family and he live an active life another 16 yrs! He had a couple years of bad hip pain which we resolved using "the watercure" formula of 1/4 teaspoon extra sea salt per quart of water just added to his gravy every other day! yeah all Drs benefit from low sodium diets!

    I did what was recommended by 100 % satisfactory result and I can not believe it was so easy!
    Many Many THANKS.
    It is also good to mention that I've been joining this and that forums and social media groups here in Sweden as well as internationally in order to get some advice which usually end up with rediculing and scornfulness from pepole on the web towards me, some endless and less usefull exercizes with my 3 months old Belgian Malinois Chewie...
    I also like the vids that are short and consist which makes it easier to follow up and seek among the lists for specific behaviour corrections.
    Now I am going to see if I can find any vids which address the prevention of excessive Barking for territorial or meeting of pepole/cars/bikes/animals/wind.... you name it! And of course it does not show any real sign of aggression but rather uncertainty, at least not yet!😑
    Once again, Thanks a Lot & I love you All!🤗🌻🌷🌼

      2 years late, but sharing ideas for others in this situation. Can you post an update on how things went, how he is now, and what worked, so we can learn from it?
      My suggestions: To start with, watch a few YT videos from Robert Cabral and Malinois Mom and Beckman's Dog Training. Exercise the hell out of him. Give him LOTS of things he CAN chew on. Praise him when he chews on allowed things. And yes, get a trainer with Mal experience who will come to your home a couple times to work with you and coach you. DO NOT get sucked into "Positive Only" trainer rubbish for a high-energy working dog like a Malinois. You will need strong corrections and firmness. Also work on developing your relationship with the dog, play with him a lot, tug of war, flirt pole, fetch. Get a slow-feed bowl where he has to work at it for 10 minutes each feeding to get the food instead of inhaling his food in 30 seconds; it's a brain-challenge activity for them.
      Lots of people push "crate training" for Mals, but with ours she will fuss and bark and agitate for HOURS because she wants to be out interacting with her pack. Your results may differ, depends on the dog. Trainers said my Mal pup would bark and fuss for 20 minutes in the crate and then it would stop, but they were WRONG. Also try a Herm Sprenger prong collar if your dog pulls on walks.
      For my Mal girl, the game changer was when we put her in the pool and found out she LOVES to swim-fetch. We toss a toy from one end of the pool, she swims to fetch it, brings it back to the starting point, leaves it, treads water while eagerly waiting for the next throw. She will do 30 laps if the human has that much patience. Great exercise! Easy for the human too.

    Hi colleague. I had an argument on my TH-cam channel with one of the viewers. Answer my question - twelve Malinois puppies at the age of 45 days attack me (this is their usual behavior), can I, as a breeder, correct, wean them from attacking my pants? My opinion - while they are all together, this is impossible to do!
    On the 62nd day, each of them gets into his new family, from this moment you can start training and socialization ...

    • @jdaniels1313
      @jdaniels1313 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      With the breeder we got our Mal girl from, this sounds like what we saw. His solution was a group tug-of-war blanket he would run around with, dragging it, and the pups would all latch on. Except our dog-to-be, who started to run to join the group tug-of-war, ran maybe 10 feet after him, and then turned around and ran back to chew on my shoelaces. And that's how our Mal chose us. BTW, I came away from the puppy-picking visit with lots of bleeding scratches from the Mal pups playing with us, in good faith, but not having much control over their nipping during play. Anyway, his pant legs will still take some bites, but if there is a group tug-of-war/chase toy, the pups will mostly bite that instead. Yes, a litter of pups will be 6 weeks of Hell with the cutest little nipping, biting demons ever.

    Excellent advice. I have had a pair of Mals for many years and am now training a new pair. I got the female first and spent a month bonding with her and then got a male from another breeder. I strongly suggest this method. The only thing people don't want to hear is do not get a Malinois if you are a beta personality and do not get a Malinois if you can't give them the freedom to exercise most of the day. My dogs live off leash on 10 acres and that is why they are not destructive and listen to commands. I don't spend much time training them because they know boundaries and are fast learners.

    • @jdaniels1313
      @jdaniels1313 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, it's "normal", but unacceptable, the biting and jumping. I correct my 5 month Mal girl firmly, and do use substitution, (bite this, with a toy) and she no longer bites me during play. However, she still bites my wife, stepdaughter, and housemates, because they are too "nice" to firmly, firmly correct her, and she interprets their medium-firm corrections as "play", and she loves to play, so she keeps jumping and biting. The humans are harder to train than the dog. Sometimes I'll intervene for them, and grab her by her around both sides of her face, and do a forceful shock and awe side submit on her, with verbal corrections too, and hold that for a few seconds, to help her realize it's not "play". I holder her until she whimpers, NOT from pain, but because she's upset that the play stopped. It looks bad, I'm cruel, whatever, but that's all that's been effective with this strong-willed dog. It doesn't really hurt her, but what gets through is that the play stops when she bites.

    Our Malinois has a kitchen kennel, and a bedroom kennel for sleep and resting.
    Nova, she is now using her kitchen kennel for sleeping, is that ok? We usually use that kennel for NO toys, and a Bad Girl kennel. She now knows the word bad and will kennel herself until I tell her “let’s go”( obviously Nova is a lot smarter than us). Today, per usual she gets one treat a day, usually morning. I made her sit, down, stay, don’t touch treat and eat it/take it( she understands both) today she tested me and took it without telling her, and nipped me TWICE. I IMMEDIATELY CORRECTED, the situation by yelping ouch really loud and extremely sternly said BAD, and immediately put her in her cage. After I locked her in there, I continued to say “Bad”very sternly. After about 10 minutes or so, I opened the cage… and said let’s go.
    WHAT, if anything am I doing wrong? If any? Biting, not even for play is acceptable.

    We got a dog as a 8 week puppy but he kept biting us me and my kids so we had to return him we don’t know how to train him so it’s better we get a breed that doesn’t bite.

    I just adopted a one year old female Malinois from a shelter. She is very sweet and affectionate. She has had no training, no boundaries set, nothing. I am bringing her home Monday. I am more than willing to work with her. What is the first thing I need to teach her and how?

    • @RobS123
      @RobS123 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      "Leave It" is the first thing we taught our 3 month old as it is necessary to get them to drop bad things they pick up in their mouths, to leave another dog or person alone, etc. Next thing is recall, or "Come". Dogs, especially ones like a Malinois, NEED off leash exercise (like the guy says in the video), and you will need them to come back when called. All these involve repeating the commands until they perform the task, and immediately saying "Good Leave It", or "Good Come" followed immediately with a treat. practice often. The first time they do what you ask, it's probably by accident because they don't speak English, but once you tell them "Good" whatever the command is with a treat, they'll learn. I am no trainer, but that seems to have worked with two puppies we've had.

      I, and many other Mal owners, had to start using a prong collar to get decent leash behavior. As she's getting older, we can often get decent behavior without the prong collar.

      I read you can put some lemon juice on your hands and they'll stop being mouthy right away... I don't remember the source so it's just third hand information. You can't squirt them with the lemon cuz you can get it in their eyes and their noses...
      Remember too, that the children get bitten in the face by dogs because dogs communicate with their mouths to establish authority... And usually the dogs are face-to-face height-wise with cruising babies and toddlers.
      You may decide to crate your pup or keep it on a leash and never leave it unsupervised around your baby.
      My last one was about 8 with my first child and way past the biting mouthy phase...extreme caution is recommended because you can't undo the heartache and heartbreak of having a harmed child and having to put the dog down...

    I babysit my son’s 10 month old malinois at my house 5 days a week. Today my brother came and the dog has never met him. The dog bit him twice, getting his clothes and not breaking skin. She was barking in a threatening manner and I crated her for safety. She also bit one of their neighbors. So she’s ok with her own “pack” but not with strangers. Not sure what to do with strangers who may come.

      Did you get a trainer yet - definitely don't want that getting worse. Got my Dobes used to a Hound of the Baskervilles muzzle - actually helps build their confidence as does any type of Nose Work. Chirag Patel has a video on getting them used to a muzzle. Even my Beagle/JRT mix who hasn't worn one in years wagged her tail when I got it out the other day. My younger Dobe was wearing a red Caution collar until we started working with a trainer who said we were setting the dog up for failure. Got really good at reading his body language - Susan Garrett's TEMP video and Kikopup's calming signals video. Now I ask people if it's ok for him to say Hi to them - quite a difference. Baebae's training if you're interested in competing in Nose Work - she's a judge whose puppies are even winning titles. Hope that helps.

    I do feel like my 4 month old Belgian has no respect for me. And I don’t know how to restructure it

    • @robinnolan8006
      @robinnolan8006 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Structure, rules, consistency, boundaries, time out, verbal correction & follow through.
      Research training with treats and how hungry dogs respond quickly to training... Especially when young. If your dog is full, it has no desire for a treat... So keep your dog a little hungry for training. So you need to watch some good videos so that you can master it and then eventually get them off relying on treats to behave.
      One consistent step at a time. Have confidence! (I am not a trainer I have experience with the breed and it's important for you to be the boss of the house the dog or chaos will ensue and you'll all be miserable) dogs love structure and they don't want to be in charge of the house but feel forced to if you don't give them boundaries.

    Why buy a malinois if you're not going to work them? These are elite k9's that need experienced handlers not someone who's going to complain about biting. That's what they're bred for. Find yourself a experienced decoy and start training.
