Yes, E7. Its in a mixolydian mode (as so many of Phish's stuff is but also so so many of rock songs are). Funny thing about the mixo is you can play Em pent, Em dorian, Em minor blues scales. You would't think so because of the major 3rd in the E7 chord, theoretically but somehow it works and works beautifully.....
The opening E7 turns out to be a lot easier than I thought. I hear it (and have played it) as Trey hammering on the maj 3rd of the E7 when forming that chord. Turns out I was working hard, not smart :-)
Ha, very cool! Yea, it adds some depth to the sound. Trey sometimes does it and sometimes he just plays a straight up E. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@JoshPearson your breaking down with the theory and strum patterns is amazing. Just keep going with phish. Maybe doing a breakdown of the Shakedown with Phil and Friends 4-15-99. Trey does great on that one. Anyways love the channel. I like trying to play Trey/Phish gets me out of my comfort zone. You’re a great player and teacher. Keep the content flowing! ✌️
@@MrBINGEBOY right on, thanks for kind words! Here's my rundown on that Shakedown Street, which I loved those Phil & Friends shows with Trey and Page. Trey ripped em! Thanks again for watching and commenting! th-cam.com/video/JXmtWXrqCNo/w-d-xo.html
Hey brother! I think you are absolutely amazing in your playing and ability to emulate Trey’s style. My critique: let/ show people that you are playing with hybrid picking using that middle finger underneath the pick strokes. (Maybe a lesson on just that?) If this a lesson on ‘how to’ play (and you f’ing rip!) let that be mentioned so that a basic/ beginner player or conventional alternate picker knows that what you’re playing is not really possible without the hybrid puck.
Appreciate the feedback. Yes, I can do a lesson on hybrid picking. When I'm playing live, with a band, the hybrid picking is less often. Here's a recent live video in the Phish element where I'm picking most of the notes. th-cam.com/video/_ZTP_cEyfU4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sp8exOMyVqkrgPwq. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Is there a specific time stamp that you're referring to? Generally speaking, this chord progression E7 to A, lends itself to the E mixolydian which has a major 3rd and a flat 7. It also lends itself to the blues scale which has a minor 3rd and a flat 7. So, by playing around with the 3rd, moving it from major 3rd to minor 3rd at different points, it can have a flavorful effect.
@@JoshPearson thanks for responding! Yes - I was talking about what you're doing right between 1:55 and 2:08 when you're doing the funky high e chords. One of my favourite things about Trey is that funky rhythm fill thing he does, and it doesn't really get covered as much as his lead style. So I was wondering if you could expand on that a bit.
@@seisner1 oh yea, he plays an Em7 up there on the 12th fret, great chord with the 2nd finger on E (12th fret low E string) and the 3rd finger barring D G B (12th fret D G B strings). Those notes, D G & B are the flatted 7th, flatted 3rd & 5th degree of the scale, which if you then take your 1st finger to bar those (D G & B) and then use your pinky on the 15th fret of the B string (D), you get a really nice, funky Em7 chord with the flat 7 (the pinky) on top. Then you can walk that 7 down a half step to the 6 using your 3rd finger on the 14th fret (C#) and you get a nice Em6 or Em13 (same difference, different chord names, to some extent). Trey uses that flat 7 to 6 movement a lot with his funky rhythmic playing. Thanks for checking it out!
Ha, thanks John! I've studied him since I was 16, so almost 30yrs now. I'd say most of it is in the hands and thought process around hearing melodic phrases / nuances. A hollowbody guitar helps, a decent amp sound, sometimes a compressor, sometimes a tubescreamer, all help to get the tone close, but the phrasing and fluidity is all in the hands. Thanks for watching and commenting!

"Pepper in the E myxolydian!" Another awesome video lesson - thanks, Josh!
Salt with the Emin Pentatonic as that's the meat and potatoes, but then pepper in the E Mixolydian for desired flavor:). Thanks for watching David!
@@JoshPearson 🤣
I gotta finish this but I got so stoked the chords were so simple for the main part. You rock 🪨 🎸
Yea, it's a long one, thanks for checking it out. Yea, the whole song is 3 chords, E7 or E, A and G. Nothing to it, you rock!
Where can I purchase those sweet Helix presets tho?

Any lesson on Treys strumming style I can’t find a lesson on it. Super light but hard at the same time.
Yea, he's got a very advanced / technical strumming style with so much variation. I'll see about doing a lesson on it. Thanks!
not really into phish but ur content is really good
ha, right on, appreciate you watching. Which band or songs are you into? Maybe I can do a tutorial on them...

Can you talk a bit about what you're doing when you go up to the Emin7 and the variations at the 12th fret?
