Are you in the middle of a creative crisis? Or just feeling burned out with your game project? Yeah, I've been there too - and was there very recently. Here's some things I've learned while working through my own creative blocks, while trying to develop a game in Godot. Hope you find these insights helpful!

Your 2nd and 3rd tips cannot be understated. Stepping away from a project to go enjoy yourself, and take a real, entertaining, or otherwise inspirational break shouldn’t ever be a negative experience. Go play a game, watch a movie, sit down and relax, and otherwise just “experience” something without letting the responsibilities of a long and arduous project weigh on you. It doesn’t have to be an inspirational thing, just a thing to unwind. The best kinds of projects aren’t the kinds that prevent you from walking away, but the kinds that keep drawing you back in and live in your head. If you have a game project like that, then you’ll inevitably create something out of it. Might as well relax along the way.

Very well said! Yeah, it's great when you have an outlet that you're excited to return to after taking a break. Game dev has definitely been that for me.

I can attest to these 3 tips being important especially taking breaks and breaking things down as I remember getting completely overwhelmed before with a project and coming back to it after a little time off can be great for getting a solid overall perspective over it.

Yeah, it's super important to take a step back sometimes and get a fresh perspective. It's really easy to zone in on all the problems you have to solve and lose sight of the broader vision.

For me I can’t even manage to start a project. I’ve been trying to become an indie dev for a while now, though I keep on getting stuck in a field of unfinished ideas. Every time I think I’m ready to start I realize that the idea is vastly incomplete and I jump to making other one. I have almost everything I need to start a game, but it’s always out of my grasp. Like me not being able to choose a pixel art software for the life of me. So many options… Anyway the video is really helpful, so I’ll be sure to keep this in mind if I can actually manage to start my project.

I think the best advice I could give for your situation is not to think about all aspects of the project at first, and to let portions of the game "develop themselves." When I started Lost Resolve, all I really had was a player controller that felt nice to control. Literally every other aspect of the game (levels, visuals, story, music) have been formed around it. If you can find a singular thing that you can do really well - be it story, art, innovative gameplay or some other aspect - use that to create a backbone for your game and flesh out the details later. I'd also say don't be afraid to let your vision shift as you go on. Initially my idea was to have the "hub world" be a mockup operating system and the levels be bits and pieces of a game the main character was developing on their work PC, but I quickly realized it was an unnecessarily complex concept for my first game and scaled the scope down to be just a fun, speedy platformer with a story that matched the assets. I have full confidence if you commit to an idea, you'll come up with something great!

@@Swinkly_ Thank you. This helps a lot. I think I have a good story idea now that I can base a game off of. Good news is I think I now know where to start. I think I may just find some free asset packs to use as placeholder art until I can make my own. Thank you again this helps me so much.
