Omg! This video is exactly what I was looking for! Can't wait to do this. This guy is absolutely amazing. I can watch his vidoes over and over. Same videos over and over. His style of presenting is perfect for this type of stuff. ❤
In splicing the only measurements you need are only inches/cm when you need to mark out an eye length. For everything else, well, yeah, you know the drill. Everything but inches/cm
Great informative video, have done a bunch of eyes and back splice in 3 strand back in boy-scouts to present day but now considering making a couple prusik cords for myself. Already made, they don't break the bank but self made adds so much more value. Thanks for sharing your knowledge God Bless
Great video! It's like having your own personal teacher! This has to be the only video in the billions available on TH-cam on how to splice 8 mm ocean! Would a 5-ft section be enough to make a 28 inch eye to eye? If not, what is the minimum ft needed?
Thanks for posting this. A few questions: would it be easier to pull out the core if the cover taper strands are removed first? Also, would it be easier to taper the cover if strands were pulled starting at the end of the rope and back toward the splice?
I always pull the core first because the cover tends to unravel if you taper it first and then start yanking on the core. I have never tried to do the taper in reverse. Let me know how it goes if you try it
It is the same as 8mm Ocean Poly but the length is slightly longer because you use a larger fid for the layout. I use a 3/8" (9mm) fid. For a 30" prusik I cut the length at 42" after splicing the first eye.
I use a thin-wall heat shrink tubing with an adhesive inner layer and 3:1 shrink ratio. I get it in 4' lengths. My main sources are elecDirect.com, buyheatshrink.com or heatshrink.com.
Have you ever eye-spliced ocean vectran 6mm? Any thoughts on whether this is possible, difficult, stupid etc.? I'm new to splicing but curious about using that cord for some things in the climbing/mountaineering world. Many thanks for the video.
I have not spliced ocean vectran. It may be possible but could require a brummel splice because it is a class two rope with most of the strength in the core.
8mm fid is 170mm with short fid = 65mm (6-3/4" and 2-1/2"). For 8mm ocean poly 5' is plenty to make any prusik from 28-32". There are tables of fid lengths available on the internet..

Thank you for the kind words!

Great tutorial. This saved me when splicing 8mm Liros Herkules Vision which has a very tight and inflexible cover. Thanks 😀 !
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, it's extremely interesting to see how this stuff is made
Agreed!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge !
You are welcome!
Thanks a lot for the video, it's GREAT.
Every time I see American content it amazes me the measures don't have both inch and cm marks.

Our rulers all do. Steel rapes rarely do. Cloth tapes usually do.

Nice work Eric 👍🏻🇨🇦🇺🇸
Superbe video
Merci
Je comprends pas très bien l'anglais mais j'ai tout compris au procédé.
Top 👍
Exelente video
Great video! Thanks

Brittany.....!!!!! . he gives you the sizes to make it check-in (22:37) 38 in to make a 28 inches PRUSIK, 39" to make 29" and so onnnnn!!!

@@ericforsman7787 Thanks again
Good video, would the procedure and measurements be the same for 8mm Sirrus prussik cord? Thanks.
I have never spliced Sirius prusik cord, so I can't answer your question. Sorry.
Have you ever tried splicing Armor prus or epicord? I wonder if those are similar.
Gracias por tu video ✌️🫡
De nada amigo. Gracias.
That's a great sissors .
You can get the Clauss serrated scissors from Treestuff for $26.99..
Is there any chance you could do a video for 10mm ocean polyester? Or is it just a matter of using a 10mm fid and slightly different measurements?
I would like to know this as well!
It is the same as 8mm Ocean Poly but the length is slightly longer because you use a larger fid for the layout. I use a 3/8" (9mm) fid. For a 30" prusik I cut the length at 42" after splicing the first eye.
@@ericforsman7787 And the size of the eye we would use is also 3 inches with the 10mm Ocean?
Would it be possible to splice a ring into both eyes? I’m interested in making an adjustable friction saver and would need a ring in the prusik
Yes.
Thanks for making this
this method is for class 1, not class 2 correct?
Yes, you are correct. Ropes that have nylon or polyester cores are spliced with a class 1 splice. Ocean Poly has a polyester core.
How many inches are four a short foot .. thank you
Would this process work for a 10mm Prusik? Except with a 10mm tubular fid? Also would the reduction of the cover strands be the same?
Yes, cover strands are reduced by 50% count the cover strands to confirm quantity.
What type of heat shrink tubing is that? Where do you get yours from?
I use a thin-wall heat shrink tubing with an adhesive inner layer and 3:1 shrink ratio. I get it in 4' lengths. My main sources are elecDirect.com, buyheatshrink.com or heatshrink.com.

What was the website for the wire fid?
Google on "Fids and Fibers" to find Mark. He makes all kinds of nice splicing gear. You can also buy wire fids from WesSpur Tree Gear
@@ericforsman7787 thanks for responding.
How strong is the rope?
Tensile strength of 8mm Ocean Poly is 4,945 lbs. But when you use it in a basket hitch configuration it is nearly double that.
Can you share the 8mm fid measurements?
8mm fid is 170mm with short fid = 65mm (6-3/4" and 2-1/2").
For 8mm ocean poly 5' is plenty to make any prusik from 28-32".
