Yep, it is my favorite for tying two ropes together. Easy to tie, easy to untie, and easy to see if you have it right.

Ocean Poly is a double-braided rope, so you splice it with a double-braid splice. Kernmantle ropes are a completely different type of rope in which the core strands are not braided and most of the strength is in the core. The cover is just there to protect the core. Many kernmantle ropes cannot be spliced, but there are a few that can be spliced with specialized methods. For example, check out Joe Stockton's demonstration of the spLIFE splice for Drenaline on youtube. Most core-dependent hitch cords are spliced with a Brummel Splice as opposed to a double-braid splice. This includes cords like Teufelberger HRC.

You are correct. A splice typically reduces the rated strength of a rope by 10-20%. But that is better than a knot, which reduces the strength of the rope even more.

Yes, you are correct. Ropes that have nylon or polyester cores are spliced with a class 1 splice. Ocean Poly has a polyester core.

They are Clauss serrated splicing scissors. You can get them from Treesfuff. They cost $31.00.

The whipping is really just for looks, it is the lock-stitching that is important. Some splicers do an invisible lock-stitching but I like the whiplock because it makes it makes it obvious that the splice has been lock-stitched. Happy splicing! Eric

My experience with this knot is exactly the opposite. If you tie, dress, and set the knot correctly it does not slip, even under very heavy loads. And the real beauty of the knot is that it is easy to untie even after very heavy loading. I use it a lot for pulling on heavy loads, such as yarding large logs up to the road, and have never had a case where the knot slipped enough to let go. Before that happens the rope breaks. Just be sure to set it good and tight before you start pulling on it.

Samson recommends a short fid between marks B and C, but if you want to use a long fid that won't hurt anything. The only downside of using the long fid is that it may make the final bury more difficult and it will make the rope a bit stiffer in the area of the splice.

@@MrViking10000 Yes, I decided to take it down because the newer method recommended by Teufelberger makes the final bury much easier to do and it makes the lock-stitching much easier as well because there is not as much material crammed into the throat of the splice. The Teufelberger video by Joe Stockton is very good, so I decided to not confuse people with the old method. I got some flack from a few splicers who thought I should not have taken it down, but I think it was for the best.

@@ericforsman7787 I think your methods a lot safer and honestly I spliced tachyon so much I had no trouble after a while. I recommend keeping it up in case I want to go back and double check

@@ericforsman7787 such a quick sleight of hand that I couldn't even see it happen! I felt the same way when I was taught to splice cable on a landing for a logging outfit. When everyone knew their job it was a very fast procedure.
