    This is a quick demo of how to use the Arturia MIDI control centre to upload wavetables in .wav format to the synth. It's really simple, but I have done it for all 400! Patrons get free access to my Arturia formatted files.
    *These aren't the factory wavetables* - they're copyrighted. These are from the Waveterm which was an additional unit to hook to your PPG to add user waves.

    Wavetables weren't called waveterm. The Waveterm is a special computer you could connect to the PPG Wave. The Waveterm used the Analog circuitry and you could sample with it, make your wavetables and do things like fast Fourier transformation...

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Aaah thanks... I thought something like that may have been the case. I'd seen couple of things re Waveterm A, B and C. I was too excited to load the wavetables than to fully research :)

      Waveterm is a CRT and keyboard interface with a AD converter and mic/line for sampling, sample/multisample editing and creation of user wavetablews to be used in PPG Wave 2.2/2.3 which contain the 512k RAM for this.
      its a pure digital device no analog circuitry. only analog is found in back end of PPG Wave voice arhitecture: a vcf and vca per voice and analog sum of voices into stereo mix.
      Waveterm A worked with PPG 2.2 and only supported 8bit sampling
      Waveterm B worked with PPG 2.3 and supported 8/16bit (tho DAC on 2.3 is 12bit),
      Waveterm C isn't a PPG product. its an unfinished/unreleased software solution to replace real Waveterm, that has been shelved for past ten yrs or more.

      @@StarskyCarr Waveterm A was an 8 bit sampler, usually with 8" floppy disks and worked with the PPG Wave 2.2 (could only playback 8 bit samples)
      Waveterm B was a 12 bit sampler, with 5.25" disks and worked with the PPG Wave 2.3 (which could play back 12 bit or 8 bit samples)
      (both the A and B *do* have analogue hardware for sampling).
      Waveterm C was a a hardware product created by myself and two colleagues to try and emulate the waveterm functionality on a PC, it did have a standalone USB -> PPG Bus interface for this.
      (the C does NOT have any analogue hardware)

      @@PaulasTechStuff thanks for clarifying and thanks for uploading the files. Very cool. I guess I should’ve researched a bit more before describing what they were so inaccurately!! 🤦‍♂️ but I was having too much fun with it… It does explain why they don’t change that much through the sample!
      I’ve always found uploading user waves to my XT as a real pain and with this being so simple I was keen to share… thanks again, and I hope you don’t mind me referencing your site.

    I always overlooked the Microfreak because I’m more drawn to analog poly sounds, but I finally bought one last week and man, is this a fun creative little synth. There’s so much weird stuff packed in there it feels like it came from the same universe as the OP-1. I can definitely see why everyone loves it.

    Love arturia for doing these updates & thanks for pointing towards this cool resource :) btw 16 bit is just twice the amount of bits (and hence twice the kilobytes) as 8 bits, but you're right 8 more bits is 2^8 times more possible values (a lot more than double)

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah its twice the bits but 16 bit is 64k states and 8 bit is 256 states. I didn't have time to think it through while waffling on.. but yeah I suppose in terms of bits its twice as many... just each of those bits is capable of holding much more info.

      do you think it's worth having a microfreak if i own already a pro 3 ?

    • @earlsfield
      @earlsfield 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@burger659 Well to be honest - If I bought PRO 3 first I probably wouldnt get MF. However, MF is by far the most versatile synth out there for the buck. Constant updates, almost entire Mutable Instruments Plaits oscillator (that alone is 300 quid osc), and mostly these latest Noise Engineering West Coast folding oscillators are worth having it all under one hub, whih also has a decent filter, mod matrix and few nice mod sources. One disclamer - not all features from Mutable or Noise Enginnering is in those oscillators, so its not really 1/1. OFC MF cant compare with PRO 3 on any level, but it does have these few things that PRO 3 doesn't, namely these more obscure oscillators. That being said, if you are into modular and already have Plaits, or any of the West Coast modules, I dont think you would need MF. But again..... so versatile for so little money. I wish Arturia has added MF engine to Polybrute, as one digital oscillator, that would make it probably the strongest new poli on the market. ATM for me, its Super 6.

      @@earlsfield thanks !! i love how fm sounds in the MF.. but for fm i also have the Elektron syntakt... i also feel that the enveloppes in the MF are very "fast& snappy" ..

    • @earlsfield
      @earlsfield 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@burger659 now, if you like fm, there are other solutions. Try Twisted Electrons - they make synths and beat machines that use fm chips from gaming consoles, and are way more complex than just a single operator fm on MF - their machines are 4 operator fm. Also, if you like that wobbly, crisp Boards of Canada pad sound, that moves pitch and has a little grit, I recon you would love it. Try Mega FM. Or Digitone for that matter, they are both 4 operator fm but so different. Yeah syntakt can make some gnarly fm but you want more operators in there for pads and more complex fm than just linear or exponential fm on single osc. Microfreak sets automatic ratio though, allowing for easy tweak on single fm operator.

    As a long time fan of PPGs and wavetable synthesis. I'd like to add the Txxx disks you found on my site are actually samples.
    the PPG 2.2 and 2.3 could both playback either wavetables (128cycles per wave) or samples by "gluing" the wavetable ram together.
    So what you're hearing is a snippet of a sample rather than a wavetable.. T040 is a very well know bass sample (think Frankie goes to hollywood) and T400 is an incredible choir sample (Propaganda used it, a lot).
    you can hear T400 in this noodle of mine on TH-cam - th-cam.com/video/0K70fa_MC_4/w-d-xo.html (at the start)

      @@SpeccyMan you can prove yourself wrong by simply loading a 16bit audio file and saving it as 8bit audio in order to observe the savings in file size. it's written all over the internet: audio file size (in bit) = bit depth x sample rate x duration of audio x number of channels. hence, if you half the bit depth, you'll also half the filesize.

    It looks (and sounds) to me like the Arturia software is misinterpreting the wavetables and treating multiple consecutive cycles as a single cycle. This causes them to sound a lot thinner than intended.

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The owner of the files (Paula Maddox previously of Modal now Dove Electronics) has commented in the pinned post. Lots of these should be treated as samples not wavetables. So set the modulation to run through the waveforms. There’s lots of famous ones in there like Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s bass tone.

    • @eyeball226
      @eyeball226 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@StarskyCarr Oh of course, but that won't help for the ones it's misinterpreting. IIRC the Microfreak only supports 32 cycles per wavetable, so if you give it one with more cycles it sometimes groups them. e.g. if there are 64 cycles in the wavetable there's a chance it'll misinterpret every pair of cycles as one. This will make some of the sounds thinner than they're meant to be.

    • @eyeball226
      @eyeball226 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@StarskyCarr See the waveform view in the control centre at 2:41 - there are 8 consecutive cycles of the original sample crammed into each cycle being shown.
