Does the Arturia MicroFreak have too many issues?

  • UPDATE: Arturia completely replaced this unit with a brand new one. No issues so far.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    I love this synth. It sounds great. It just has too many issues.
    Maybe it's just my unit, but it's been in this weird frozen state twice now. First time I had to send it to Arturia and it got back into a playable state. It happened again, so it wasn't fixed.
    I'm not sure what to do with it now...
    I have one more thing to try and I'll keep you posted if it works

    Mine has been 100% flawless except for when I was sitting in an airliner at 40,000 flying across the Pacific Ocean and the unshielded keyboard was affected by radiation or something. I would say that your situation is not emblematic of all MicroFreaks, or of Arturia. Another one may be perfect for you. Also note that the MiniFreak may be a very good choice for you too. I applaud Arturia for repairing it for you the first time. The problem may be a cracked or loose connector inside.

      Yeah, I’m not writing Arturia off anytime soon. I just saw many other users with odd issues with the MicroFreak. The MiniFreak looks good, the added FX would be great!

    Arturia’s MicroFreak is a great board. All new electronic devices have random build issues, but of the 3 I’ve owned, I’ve had zero issues. Hope you get yours handled

      Which ones do you have? I really like the Dreadbox Nymphes-I guess that’s just a mod and not semi- and Korg has the Volcas (FM2 is fantastic for $170!!)

    This is a classic intermittent hardware fault (Electrical Engineer here). Just send it back to Arturai and tell them to test it properly. Mine works faultlessly so it's unlikely a design issue.

      I won't mention the company's name because it wouldn't be fair. A few years ago, I finally bit the bullet and moved up to a mid-size synth - 61 keys. It was a great machine...until it started turning itself off. I talked to support and they were baffled. So I returned it to the retailer and they sent another one. It had the same problem! You don't have to hit me in the head with a hammer. I returned that one to the retailer and bought another brand. The company had just a 1% failure rate and is almost universally admired. It was just "one of those things" where I bought two lemons in a row. It happens.
      By the way, the retailer was fantastic. There was absolutely no charge to me for the exchanges. They even refunded my original fee for shipping to me. So I paid not one dime. I was very surprised by that. On the other hand, it is actually fair. I did nothing to cause the problems.
      That retailer has a customer for life.
      I don't think it had anything to do with electrical wiring. Everything else works fine in that outlet.

    The same thing happened to me the first day I bought it, I connected it to my PC to update the firmware, when suddenly it stopped at 17%, giving an error, I tried again and this time it reached 100%, but it just turned on the light The "Utility" button stayed on, I turned it off and on about 5 times and it remained the same, when I connected it to the Midi Controller Center, it didn't detect it, but I still hit Firmware Revision and reinstalled the new version (a third once) now yes, at the end it worked again as if nothing had happened.

      Yeah, I ended up with a brand new unit. Put firmware 5.0 on it and I think I'll leave it be for a long time

    Zero issues with mine after a few years. Absolutely love it and i'm MEGA excited about firmware 5. Shame you are having issues.

    was jamming on my mate's one last night, running through a boss space echo pedal, no problems. sounded great and everything working well! then plugged another pedal into the chain, and all hell broke loose. the synth started emitting this low frequency clicking sound and nothing else. figured it was the pedal and switched back. still busted. turned the thing on and off. the synth was EXTREMELY slow and laggy and was still making the same sound. we tried everything and couldn't get it to work again and now he has to send it back. i felt really awful but at the same time we couldn't find any issue with the pedals, power supply or cables, and at the end of the day, your synth shouldn't be extremely slow and laggy, it reeks of a firmware issue. having said that, it was on the version it shipped with (i think 4.8), and we couldn't update it once it started having issues, as this seemed like a potential fix.
    my mate is new to synths and like most normal people would not even think about the fact that these things need firmware. maybe this wouldn't have happened if he had updated it right after unpacking it. i've read other stories online about people having problems the moment they pull the headphones out, for example. and they describe similar behaviour to what we experienced and what you did too.
    anyway thanks for your video, the production values are top notch and i hope you get some more subscribers

      Yeah, I think it will act funky if you pull out the TRS or headphone cable while it's no for some reason.

    My aperiator does not work and freezes sound.The moment I engage the apergio I have no sound at al. Send a ticket to arturio and waiting now for response. Hope to get it working again.

    I don’t think it’s fair to extrapolate your experience with the Microfreak to cast doubt on their other instruments, you simply had a bad experience with some used gear. I’ve not had any issues on my Microfreak or Minifreak, and the PolyBrute (which I also own) is in a completely different league in terms of price and build quality, they are solid instruments.

      They are replacing the MainBoard on my unit, so it should be good as new when I get it back.

    Im hearing the USB causes noise? I want to use USB MIDI im hearing when you plug the USB in more noise is there

      yeah -- usb does add noise. try plugging in with power adapter then use midi over usb?

    I have an Arturia Minilab MKII and the knobs all failed really quickly. their software is great, the Keystep hasn't failed me yet, but I do feel a little wary of their quality control now. Hope yours works out.

      That sucks! My KeyStep has been great and I move it around a lot (I have an Analog Case for it)
      Their software is great, Pigments is one of my favorite soft synths I have!

    mine got repaired three times each time something different had to be replaced now the unit freezes again after 1-2 minutes using it doesn't matter what i do it will freeze. first time it didn't want to turn on second time i had no audio output and the third repair was for the usb port. Cannot recommend this product. Poorly engineered always had trouble with it non stop also they never replaced the unit just repaired it. Im trying now to get a new unit but support was skeptic and wantedt video proof Im waiting for their response now

    Had my microfreak for approx 10 days now. Updated to 5.0 firmware and now the panel button will not turn off. Once you press it, you have to turn the preset button to make another selection and then move it back to the preset you were originally on to try again without the panel being on. Very frustrating.

    I've been using it for years and haven't found ANY issues. Firmware update issues are 99% of the time due to BS USB implementations (controllers, hubs, cables, etc) than the device. Or you could have a faulty unit. All production of devices, from iPhones to synths, have a number of faulty units. Doesn't mean its represenative of the device in general.

      Yeah, it happened while turning it on and playing it through my Empress Reverb. I was playing 24 hours before and it was fine. I think my unit is faulty. I am in contact with Arturia support and hopefully they will have me ship it to them and maybe they can fix it by replacing parts that are faulty. I mean, they aren't Behringer (zing!)

    Hey man, really digging your content! Hope your channel blows up, you're definitely putting together a lot of the right pieces! If I may, I hope you don't mind some friendly constructive feedback on your videos:
    - Audio : In your two longer form videos with dialogue, the recording of your voice sounds kinda thin, nasally?(sorry, can't think of a better phrasing), and heavily squashed or compressed or something, but on your Short about the Korg Minilogue the recording is clear, dynamic, and cwispey. Whatever you did on your vocal chain for that short suits your voice better to my ears
    - Videography - Dude, your videography and shots are dope af. Your studio is sick, the lighting is minty, and the way you play with a narrow depth of field panning across gear or get great angles is working. The main feedback I'd give is to just cut out all the stock footage and the plain background transitions with just text, and just trust in your own excellent footage! You probably watch all these guys already but David Hilowitz Music, Hainbach, Venus Theory, and Andrew Huang are all masterclasses on the style that you're doing that could maybe give you more ideas for different shots, framings, etc.
    Keep up the good work man, your quality right out of the gate is excellent

      - Audio: TBH I don't remember which audio chain I used on the Short. I'm thinking I used my smaller shotgun mic vs my bigger boom mic for the other 2. I'll have to experiment with these mics and see what works best!
      - Video: Thanks! It's sort of a hobby of mine, outside of music, but yeah you're probably right (in some cases maybe I needed more b-roll and didn't get enough--but I should still limit the stock footage!)

    My unit was stabbed with a knife several times by a previous owner, I also disassembled it twice because my goth friend stepped on a "filter amount" knob and I had to replace it. There are occasional software bugs, but nothing serious. I guess you just had a bad luck.

    Update: Arturia sent me a brand new unit.
    To Clarify: I love this Synth and Arturia is a great company. It just seems they may have cut some corners on this synth... and/or updating firmware doesn't work well at all..
    I've had zero issues with my KeyStep or KeyLab!

    I am here today because my vocoder edition mf is having these issues. If I knew it would be like this I would not have purchased it. I guess I could just keep using 4.0.1 and not update it but what the hell. Way to go on the microfreak arturia! an easy 5 minute update process and here i am two hours into troubleshooting and I find this video confirming my fears, this unit is a flub.

      Arturia’s support is pretty good, if you fill out a ticket they will try to help you. If the unit is that bad they may replace it

      Hopefully that works-I tried a bunch of different cables but had no luck.
      Also try using the power brick when updating and/or holding shift opt arp when powering on for boot loader mode

      I had to send mine in to Arturia to be fixed. You can go to their website and should be able to get support and they might have you make a video on the issues so they can see and have you send it in.
      Something happened on their end, so I got a brand new one--lucky me

    I've got problems with my encoders skipping value when scrolling through. Also the filter amount does the same and jumps 10% at a time sometimes. Envelopes are slow to respond when the knob is turned, sometimes have to do a full turn either way before the screen responds. Bit of a pain really. Anyone had similar?

      @TravisAvey84 it's a pain. Even the updates do nothing to fix it. For the price (£279 in the uk new) I might gamble another one. I don't think I can be bothered with sending it back only to have the same issues like yourself. Just like cars, you either get a good one or a bad one.

    I haven't had mine long yet . The only issue i have is that the presets change when i change the patterns on my electribe ( this doesn't happen on my argon) which is really annoying when playing live !

      yeah that would be annoying! Before mine ended up the way it did, I remember it would change patches by itself!
      They sent me a new unit, and so far it's working fine!

    Mine had broke twice over a year period . I just don't think it can handle plugging it in to fx pedals especially through the phone jack. Each time it blew the processor was when I was running fx pedals. Maybe just too much static electricity or ground loop accidents fry it. They fixed it twice , and the second time i didn't have to pay anything. Now my keybed is worn down. Sounds great though . Don't think i'll buy anymore, as much as I like it. i still use it a lot, especially for its vocoder.

      I think it's the keybed as it exposes the metal leads to create the sounds. In hindsight I would probably go for the Hydrasynth Explorer for just a little bit more

    Opened a brand new stellar version and it's noisy as hell. Sounds like crap. The noise floor is insanely hot. The preset patches are mostly horrible. Like, 80% is worthless. Returning it. I was already very cautious about how much I'd like the sound and I had very high hopes based on all the videos. Just happy i can return it unlike others. Sorry everyone. Looks like everyone is complaining about this issue

      Oh wow that sucks! Might be a faulty unit and did you try a TRS cable?
      It does sound good with some FX like reverb and chorus.
      They ended up giving me a new unit and so far it’s been good. But hope you can find a synth you like in that price range!

      @TravisAvey84 it's definitely in the unit, not a wiring issue. The volume out is like 8db quiet. So as you turn up your input in the next device in the chain, you amplify the noise even more. And the noise remains after turning off unit. Only way to stop is unplug audio output. Researching the problem, so many others experiencing this. This wasn't ready for release as an arturia QC'ed product. It's embarrassing

      @ET2carbon ugh that sucks! There’s a lot of good synths in that price range like the Korg Minilogue or Moog Mother 32 (used) Dreadbox Nymphes to name a few. Not sure what your price range is but there’s good stuff out there!
      One more thought: sometimes certain lights can affect a cable (if not shielded) sometimes when recording this one I have to turn my room lights off and only the video lights on and there’s no noise

    Not because you had an issue with it that the synth isn't one of the best on the market. Maybe it is on your end. If not, there would be tons of videos like yours on youtube. But thanks for informing about your issue.

      They replace mine with a new one and no issues, so maybe a few slip through

    I had the same issues and i returned it back to Arturia 2 Times, nothing changed !
    The first Microfreak i had , did Pitchbending for no reason > Returned it
    The second Microfreak i got seemed ok but when i started a Firmware update it crashed and didn´t react to any USB anymore > Returned it
    The third microfreak i got did the same issue when updating Firmware, it crashed in the middle of the process and didn´t respond to USB Anymore.
    I switched the Microsfreak off and on for 30 times and luckily i was able to get a USB connection again.
    I did a Rollback to an old Firmware version and i have to say the Microfreak runs solid like a brick since then, i will never ever try to update it.
    The Firmware Version i use is: 2.0.3.657
    Give it a try.

      Yeah, I tried a bunch of older firmware updates but nothing worked. I’m sending my unit in today and they are replacing the MainBoard. So that will probably do it

    I can't say I encountered a single issue with mine in 6+ months of regular use. It's such a clever tool.
    I know people had issues with early firmware but I arrived later than that.
    And complaining because firmware is difficult to update ? Something you may have to do twice a year in the office ?
    Honestly I don't get it.I think the Microfreak was the best idea of these last years. Dissing it on the basis of a dificient unit really isn't fair.

      Firmware wasn't difficult to update--I have done it before...
      It had froze up before I tried to push a firmware update. While trying to update it gets stuck at 20%

    All facts. I just got this one and fay three, it has no audio. So its going right back. Can't depend on it . But it seemed like a cool inexpensive synth for odd soinds

      it does do some interesting sounds! if I were to start over, I might go with a hyrdrasynth.
      Arturia did completely replace my unit, though

    Tampoco lo recomiendo, tengo problema con el aftertouch y muchas veces hace sonidos extraños incluso en el preset predeterminado ( dónde no hay ninguna configuración aplicada)

    Damn, I haven't seen any of this and love mine. So unfortunate that this is happening to you. Like a few others have said I hope the new firmware fixes some things or they can get you a fixed version of yours if you end up sending it in again.
    It does sound like their new firmware is being delayed a bit due to having to fix some bugs so maybe it ends up being more stable over all. But based on your experience it sounds like it might be some faulty hardware and firmware would do little to help if this is the case.

    Sorry to hear that. Maybe you got a defective piece because it's the first time I hear about it, but also a perfectly functioning Microfreak is unplayable live without a MIDI controller. If your fingers have a microparticle of sweat notes get stuck XD. I decided to live with that because as you, I like the concept of this synth.

      I have stuck notes all the time. Probably due to the sweaty hand issue.
      I spoke to Arturia and they said I should only use the keyboard whilst wearing shoes!! This hasnt worked...
      I actually prefer using a midi controller with velocity to affect the sound and using sliders instead of knob twists

      @@annother3350 Yep me too, I pair it with an aftertouch controller but it kind of sucks to have to connect peripherals and carry like 3x the cables. I'd much rather a Roland Boutique with its K-25M keyboard. But again, the Microfreak concept is amazing (even more so now with the just released firmware)

    Are you basing this all on a sample size one? Or do you have any input suggesting the Microfreak is prone to breaking in general?

      Eh not really.. I did find enough Reddit posts/comments (even here) that some-not all-microfreak owners have seen issues…
      I am still considering the PolyBrute at some point, because I think Arturia is a good company

    same issue , wish the stellar version was usb 3.0 seems outdated for mac users, thats the issue the usb 3.0 thunderbolt. I tested it on my windows 11 usb 2.0 works flawlessly

      Yeah, I will be using my older windows desktop to update my MicroFreak from now on.
      They did give me a new one, so all issues should be gone (still will only use my windows pc to update/patches/etc)

      @@TravisAvey84 i traded my in today for the stellar version it does not have the same usb issue . interesting. it does come with 4.04 loaded but not 5.0 which would have expected but the update is running fine from my usb port on my m1 macs running 12.6.3 Monterey on it's thunderbolt ports using a cheap usb adapter.

    You know these things happens with almost any type of hardware, unfortunately if you are one of the unlucky ones. You bought it used. Maybe there was a reason for the previous owner to sell it...
    No problems with my MicroFreak.

    Been down this road too, a USB brick for power solved the issue but it still is going to do weird things if too much static electricity is introduced, that keyboard is the source of all the issues. Yours clearly got zapped a bit too much and is probably toast. I wouldnt use the MF as a representation of any other Arturia product as this is the only one with that unfortunate keyboard.

      Do you mean that the keyboard pcb isn't protected from static electricity? If it's so then it's really weird.

      @@KiR_3d I first realized it when trying to use it on my bed, it froze up and/or would just randomly switch to a parameter, or stuck notes. Then I realized it worked much better on a table on a hard floor but still had issues, contacted Arturia several times, they highly recommended using a power brick which helped a little more. But still if I am on carpet, especially sitting on the floor there can be issues. Also got some issues running an audio cable to an amp plugged into house power whioe the MF was using power brick. It really needs a clean voltage source, I am sure my house power is probably not as good as newer homes have, and I live in a desert, humidity can be under 10 percent at times.

      @@evankeal actually some clothes (from synthetic materials) can be "aggressively static"! I'm not using any gear on such surfaces at all. I've learned this when was doing my synth DIY studies with breadboards, passive radio parts and multiple chips which (some of them) can be killed by static easily if you're not shielding the case (which I ve didn't have obviously).

      @@KiR_3d I imagine the humidity can get low there. The keyboard itself is kind of a PCB in a vague sense so I dont think theres anything they could cost effectively do to use that technology (which I doubt anyone will try again) and not have it susceptible to ISD issues and still be responsive. A little water or lotion on the hands eliminates a lot of potential issues.

      Ive had so much gear over the last 25 years. Never seen so mamy complaints. Ive experienced most myself. It doesnt play well with others... can't be relied on live.

    Have had ZERO issues with MicroFreak, been enjoying it for years. There is northing wrong with the platform. RTFM before updating as you can brake stuff doing it wrong. Never seen one 'freeze up',. ever.

      @@TravisAvey84 I just did , but first I go about the dealer , Arturia offered if that doesn’t work they’ll wanna take over , anyway after 5 years working I also figured out for myself : I am mourning here on a high level : literally I bought another MF copy exactly the one who’s broke & than proceed with the try of repair of the broken one , but I doubt it’ll work out because I pretty much think the whole thing is made in micro technique , & I am convinced the failing output is a hardware failure , p.s. I have no statistics how often this output failure really happens to customers or is it just happens to u , me & the few on google .!?

    Yeah, I would say you have a rare faulty hardware issue. Never had an issue. Been using for years. Never heard of anyone else having an issue, until now. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be. Good luck.

    I had this screen problem sometimes, and it was because i didn't use the original midi din cables.
    I used the modelcycles ones because they are actually the same, right?
    Well, it seemed to matter because when i changed it to the original, the problem was solved.
    With the model cycle din's, i needed to unplug and plug it back in every time, and that would also work.
    But it took a lot of time figuring this out, so that's why i am posting this comment so other people do not have to.
    It was a real headbreaker and pain in the ass...but such a simple solution.
    But i think your problem is different, right ?
    You're not even using din cables only usb ?
    And sometimes the sound sounded really far away and broken.
    Then, i need to change my audio interface samplerate, for example, let's say from 48000 to 44100 and back or other way around whatever you are using.
    And then i have normal sound again.
    Other than that, that is great and one of my favorite machines.
    Only keeps getting better and better, and i can not wait to install the newest 5.0 update.

      When I use MIDI I am using the original cables that came with it. As far as USB, only when updating. I use the power cable that came with it that has a grounded prong.
      It's one of my favorite synths and I hope to get it working again for Firmware 5.0!
