It is really difficult in Prehistoric, but you just have to do more with what you have. Make sure you bolster your defences (capitols or town centres + houses + towers near your defence zones). Block off your enemy's path with lines of buildings that will take most of their attack damage while you pick them off with ranged units. If possible, utilize fishing. You can often find water areas that can be 100% defended with a couple of towers (narrow rivers leading to a fish rich area inaccessible to your enemy).

One time i played prehistoric and the enemy rallied like an absolutely massive column of stone throwers. Decimated my defense and citizens after that.
