- Fatherless pot addicted standup comedian Dan Soder talks to well raised comic Ari Shaffir about what it’s like growing up with a deadbeat dad. That’s right. Much like the Simpsons’ Nelson Muntz, Dan’s father went out for cigarettes one day but unlike Nelson’s dad, Dan’s drank himself to death to keep from having to feel bad about not sending birthday cards home every freaking year.

@@TedSheckler it's when you're an alcoholic getting drunk everyday for many years to the point where it cripples you and breaks down your body and mind to the point where your body disintegrates organs fail then the heart completely dies. Not like alcohol poisoning for instant death, but a slow venom that eats away at you.

Liver failure / cirrhosis is a big one and probs the most known by the average person but it’s far from the only way people die from alcoholism.
*Cancer* : alcoholism can lead to heaps of different types of cancer. The 7 most common are liver, rectum, oropharynx, larynx, colon, and breast. Others that alcoholism can increases the risk of are pancreas, prostate, skin cancer, and more.
*Diabetes*
*Heart disease* : heart attacks etc
*Strokes* : alcohol contributes to 8% of all strokes caused by a clot in the brain and 16% of bleeding strokes
*Pancreatitis* : acute and chronic pancreatitis are caused by alcoholism.
*Anemia* : super treatable and not usually deadly but if untreated it can potentially be. Iirc it’s like 1.6/100k people that die from it.
Alcohol is pure evil and caused nearly 100,000 deaths in 2020 alone. The pandemic especially wreaked havoc on alcohol related deaths.
Sorry I wrote so much I just have a lot of family members that suffer from alcoholism or have died from it in one way or another so I read a lot to try and have a better understanding. I never went wild with it myself but once a few family members recently relapsed I decided to just give it up completely. Seeing the potential negatives it could cause me just didn’t seem worth it and I’m in my 20s so hangovers would only get worse Lololol Plus I’ve saved a few bucks since I don’t buy overpriced drinks at bars or restaurants when I go out anymore!😎😂
I am sorry for your loss. I’ve lost family to alcoholism too and it is rough. Time will help. If you need to talk to someone or just want to vent about whatever, I’m here for ya man. I can relate to you.

Dan Soder is the fucking man….making an appearance with Ari shows real integrity.
I was lucky enough to meet Dan after his show at the Comedy Store a couple weeks back. First time at the store and he had Kim Congdon, Andrew Santino and Bill Burr come up before him. Everybody Killed!!! He was so nice and I was so grateful he took time to hang out for a few minutes when he could've easily just not come out at all. He and Big Jay helped get me through the pandemic because I spent almost all of it by myself.
Man, lots of staring at my feet when Dan got deep about his Dad and Sister. Great episode man.

It is truly amazing hearing Dan's story this much in depth. I really could feel the strong connection he had with his sister, and I actually forgot his sister had died as well, so when the story got to that part of him revealing she died in a car accident so soon after his father, it just really hit me hard. Have so much more respect for Soder after hearing all this.

It’s paradise in the right places and hell in others. Would love to give Dan a tour of the good parts of that area, there is great hiking, great food, amazing bud.

This is a really special podcast. Thank you Ari and Dan. Dan's episode on the Honey Dew is also stellar but I think Ari brought out more vulnerability in Dan.
I heard snippets of these stories of Dan early life but the whole story really is something special and yet so relatable. Dan is so damn cool and funny.
