      I have almost the entire bauer power tool line and have loved them all. The grinder is especially nice. The little chainsaw is great for pruning trees that want to smack you in the face while mowing. The hedge trimmer leaves a bit to be desired but it works.
      I ran the hammer drill in concrete all day and it survived. Use the hex impact daily, and use the 1/2" impact every time I'm working on a car. I even have their little shop blower, which is great.

    I have an older harbor freight saw, about 30 years old. I've been using it for bole pruning Douglas for trees in Oregon. Thousands of trees from the ground up to about 7 feet, to develop clear wood. From 7 foot up I use a pole saw. But, for a $3 saw, it's produced a lot of clear timber.

    Mora is the first thing that comes to mind for me as well. The only reservation I have is that you’re 2/3 of the way through this with HF tools. Go with a HF knife. Think about it. You’re pushing the envelope with possibly producing a reliable kit for the $25ish range.

  • @kellygray2852
    @kellygray2852 3 ปีที่แล้ว +83

    Cody, I cant tell you how much I appreciate the recent theme of being able to "do more with less". I was raised by a dad who taught me that quality tools definitely matter. But if something exist that can get the job done at least semi-efficiently, and not take the investment of a professional in that field, then it is superior to us. We dont all need a snap on screwdriver set to keep a home running... thank you.

    if you do not require a folding saw, the Schmidt garden saw from some Canadian dollar stores is good for the price (approx $4). the handle is a covered metal tube so you could easily stick it on a pole for a polesaw. For a folding saw I really like the silky gomboy 210 straight blade.

      Not quite. There are two kinds of survival kits: "find me" and "don't find me". For the "find me" kit, definitely hi-vis. For the "don't find me", subdued or natural colors are imperative.

    I would pair it with the Milwaukee folding Hawkbill 48-22-1985 or the Drop point 48-22-1520. Prefer Hawkbills for rope, minor limbing, and general work, as work doesn't slide of end of blade easy and you can baton the point into stuff. The Hawkbill is easy to open with a wrist flick, locks solid, nice feel, though I wish it was easier to close one handed. I haven't tried the Drop point version, but it uses the same body as the Hawkbill, of which I have 2. Price is around $20-30 depending on seller.

Set the saw in my vice and set the teeth with a punch and hammer (just peened them over a bit - tappy-tap-tap) cuts like a champ now, lives in the back of the car with a cheap hatchet, tow rope, set of jumper cables and a towel - always have a towel.HHGTTG.

    Harbor Freight sells metal/wood files. I’d suggest taking a file (hardened carbon steel typically) and cutting it down to whatever size you want, then grinding it down to the shape, then drill some holes in the tang and handle of the file, and add some bolts to hold handle onto the tang. Then you can finish by showing how to sharpen a knife properly.
    Also, you could show your viewers how to (cheap) make a very nice leather sheath with some leather (leather shoe soles are extremely inexpensive) and a $10 steel grommet kit, or even a snap grommet kit.

Mine are probably two years old?? maybe three. they have held up over numerous trips. i don't pair mine with a fixed blade as I always carry a fixed blade when i am in the field. i own four of those saws in various kits and bags and each one of them have functioned right out of the box with a positive lockup. I haven't had to take them apart. If you are looking for a budget fixed blade for that trio go with a standard mora. You wont need to baton with it as you have the knife and saw. Mora knives are great carving tools. my current carry is a bps knives version of a Mora but it is full tang.

    Hi I do love these type vids...... You have identified a Hatchet and Folding Saw - if for a "Car Kit" - would some sort of SAK type pocket knife be a good match as you can process timber with both the hatchet & saw - a fixed blade is not as critical - a few tools in a larger SAK format could complement the kit?!? Cheers from Aus.
