    Hey I understand how to do this but the only thing that I don’t get is Why exactly is the conditional statement true whenever p is false . I understand the statement is only dealing with when P is true .. q should be as well... but when p is false ... how can we guarantee that p implies q... hopefully you understand my question haha thanks

    • @larryquinn543
      @larryquinn543 5 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Brian Stonelake hey I appreciate the reply ! I think I’ve thought of a different answer let me know what you think about it . So I also realized that just because p and q are both true , in the real world it does not mean that p implies q. You could just have a situation where p is true Independently of q. So the way I reconciled this was thinking of it in more mathematical terms as in “does it satisfy the condition “ so if p is true and q is also true , it does indeed satisfy ‘if p then q’ because when p is true q must be true for this to work . And when p is false , any truth value of q would work because the condition only concerns when p is true .. and the point of these truth tables is only to decide validity , not soundness so in a way some of the Ts can be thought of as place holders as in we’ll call it true since it does not invalidate the argument . When you think about it the only situation that would truly invalidate ‘if p then q’ is specifically when you have p but q is false . Haha that’s my thoughts on it

      I personally find this difficult to explain also but I believe it is this way:
      Since the condition is already false, there is no more condition for the q so it is independent. It becomes “vacuously” true nonetheless since Q is true

    • @beedlethebard1813
      @beedlethebard1813 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So it’s only false if the condition is negated?

      It's asking to write a T if either Q or -P has a T in that column.

    I not sure which is the problem, but my school taught me differently, for p or q. The table goes, T, F, F, and T. I'm not sure which is correct. Or are there multiple ways?

    • @LearnYouSomeMath
      @LearnYouSomeMath  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's something called an "exclusive or" where you get a T in that column only if one of the two premises are true and the other is false. So with P and Q in the order that they're in in the video, the "exclusive or" column would read F, T, T, F. However if it just says "or" I'd assume it is the "or" presented in the video, not the "exclusive or".
      The T, F, F, T that you mentioned would be the result of "if and only if", which is another less common operator not presented in the video.
      I don't think there's any way that the answer to an "or" should be T, F, F, T. Sorry!

    For 'if p then q', when p is T, there is nothing to do, so q should be blank, rt?

    • @LearnYouSomeMath
      @LearnYouSomeMath  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      no. when p is T you have to look at Q to determine the value of "if p then q". When p is F is when you don't care what q is and automatically make "if p then q" a T. However even in this case, q will still have a value. the values of p and q are given, you don't figure them out. based on those given values you determine if "if p then q" is a T or an F.
