One of my faves! I've seen it a dozen times and never gets old. The fight scenes are amazing, drunk or not, and Anita Mui, rest her soul, was incredible!

As I pointed out in my SUPERCOP comments, Hong Kong films of this era tend to either overtly or metaphorically reflect the anxiety over the 1997 Handover back to Mainland China. DRUNKEN MASTER 2 is among the most blatant in the original Cantonese version. The Stolen Chop plot includes an expository speech by Master Fu ranting against Chinese traitors who sell their nation's cultural treasures to foreigners. This is clearly directed to the thousands of Hong Kong bourgeois and intelligentsia who migrated (or planned to) other parts of the British Commonwealth. Nearly every aspect of the movie ties into that rant. Wong Fei-Hung decides to break up the smuggling operation so that his unborn sibling will grow up as part of a China with an intact historical legacy. The chop itself is a symbol of Chinese sovereignty and keeping it out of British hands is an allegorical statement referring to Hong Kong. The mad rush of people trying to board the train are refugees fleeing warlords fighting for control of China during the anarchic Nationalist period. The scene parodies the aforementioned emigration of Hong Kong bourgeois in the 1980-90s. Even the end fight in this film is highly symbolic: a westernized kickboxing capitalist versus a traditionally dressed Wong Fei-Hung using Chinese kung fu.
I would love a Marvel review series, that would be entertaining to watch you and creepy dissect and go slightly mad watching nothing but super heroes for 15 or so movies
I remember wincing at the outtakes of this movie. Usually the outtakes are funny, but in this, it's like the hurt channels itself to you. Also, please review the Bollywood Jackie Chan movie. :D
I also like this is one of the few kung fu movies from the 90's based on the Boxer Rebellion of 1880 something, a time. It doesn't get much respect in movies. If opium wasn't a thing, China probably would have beat the crap out of Britain
