These reviews are pure gold! I have watched most of them twice, watching older ones while waiting for new ones. They never get old. You are actually 'the internet personality with the best... personality!'. One of my absolute favorite channels ever! :)
More geek out material: Rob Bottin did the special effects for this movie, the same guy that did the effects for The Thing, RoboCop, Se7en, Fight Club and other greats.
10:20 If Kohagen is on Mars how does he talk to his men on Earth in real time when it takes radio waves several minutes to make the round trip? 1:18 Decker Shado, you speculations and postulations only hold weight if there was a post credit sequence implying that Doug Quaid was still at Total Recall all the time. 2:55 This guy Costanzo also played in a flick called: Amy's Orgasm, where his charcter was compelled to give cunnilingus to a chick played by the same starlet that was killed in American Werewolf in Paris. 6:20 Which doesn't make any sense, only half his money would still leave a money trail
I actually hope you keep "The summer of Arnold" going until June 20th just so everyone can keep making comments that "it's not summer anymore". I think Decker knows that guys! Great review btw. This is probably the first really violent movie I saw as a kid so it holds a special place in myevil heart. Also, the effects by Rob Bottin are freakin' awesome (as usual)!!!
Fun fact: in the original theatrical release, you could see the clamp holding up the Mars Backdrop in the kissing scene at the end. It was later digitally removed, but you can still see the sharp upper edge of the cloud stage prop as it is moved to the side.
Others like to debate whether the movie is a "dream" or not. Doug may never figure that out for certain, but it's pretty clear that it's all real. Why? We saw many scenes of what the villain's were doing by themselves without Doug. Those wouldn't exist if it were all fake memories.
Thank you. I've pointed this out many times to people who think this movie(and others) are all just in the heads of a single character. Narrative wise it makes no sence.
i have an explanation for benny. the psychics never bothered to read benny's mind because he was a mutant and not really even important compared to Douglas
This was Sharon Stone at her peak GODDAMN!-ness. Seriously though, as many times as I’ve seen this movie, I realize that I don’t think I’ve actually seen the first 15 minutes or so.
I need to do that to try to catch up to where I'm supposed to be. Summer wasn't supposed to take until November... but next week's looking crazy. Not just Thanksgiving, but I've got THREE thanksgivings to go to. When did my life turn into a sitcom?
15:07 She was also in Falling Down (which is also a masterpiece). 23:09 Technically, Martians on Mars weren't "aliens." Not if they were indigenous (or naturalized), that is. If they came from somewhere else, then they were aliens, at least until they became naturalized to the environs. See also the Eridians from Borderlands (who are continuously referred to, along with the Vaults, as being "alien" by Tannis, Jack, etc.). 23:52 "That's a new one. Blue sky on Mars!"

A masterpiece indeed, hard to find another movie so absolutely stuffed with ingenuity, twists and WTF moments. Plus the Verhoeven/Schwarzenegger combo, there will never be anything like this made ever again.
If you listen veeeeery carefully to the background techs during the memory implant scene, you'll hear the one line that tells you whether it's all an implanted memory or not.
"Get your ass to Mars " scene was 2nd most memorable. Can you tell this was my favorite movie as a kid. So many memorable quotes, especially Arnies struggling vocalizations "aahheeoohhaiou"
i just finished the book, did anyone else read it, if so i have a question which may contain a huge spoiler and possibly a better ending if i understood it correctly, did i?...Hit Read More was the second implant memory real aswell? I understood it to be so.
I've seen this movie, like... a lot. But only once all the way through. I think I saw the scene in the tunnel like, once a month on USA network growing up. What a great movie. Also it makes me really want a Claridge Hi-Tec pistol, but man those are rare.
A lot of the writing is hard to make sense of. At Rekal for example, at first Bob Mclain acts like he doesn't want Quaid to take the Mars package, like he's aware of the Agency and that Quaid is planted with a false identity, but then he talks Quaid into the Ego Trip, which is the opposite of what he would do if he's worried about Quaid recalling his identity.
2:47 No helmets or ear protection. Guess future has no safety regulations. Or their union sucks and boss wanted to save money on extra gear. Except everyone else has them. No wait there is a third guy without them. I love this movie but this really weirds me out. Maybe Arnold and friends were robots the whole time!
I liked you had the time on the microwave at 4:20 in the beginning of the video 😉😉😉 and yes that was the first thing i noticed not your floating head inside the microwave but the time being 4:20 lololol!!!! Nice little addition tho i enjoyed it!
What if the entire movie is just quads life flashing before his eyes as he dies on mars in the intro scene? Starts out normal but slowly becomes more and more unbelievable and then ludicrous as the oxygen in his brain depletes and we finally see a shiney happy "White light moment" with Quad essentially turning Mars into heaven as he finally dies from exposure.
I'm pretty sure that TRON, The Last Starfighter, Return of the Jedi, and Young Sherlock Holmes beat this movie to the punch for CGI effects in major motion pictures, by quite a few years.
At the point in my life that this came out the eye bulging suffocation scenes were hands down THE most traumatizing thing I had ever seen on film. And I had already seen the Exorcist, Freddy, Jason, etc at a young age. Holy shit did I hate this movie back then lol
It's weird how close some of the future predictions in this movie were. Not the recall but the johnny cab (self driving cars/uber), AR videogames, using car dashboard for communications, Skype...
This is one of those movies that "purists" hate, but everyone else tends to love. This is the kind of movie I grew up watching. I got duped into seeing the remake by people I used to trust with making movie suggestions. Them: "The remake is faithful to the book! It's way better!" Me [after watching the remake]: "If I ever see you IRL, I'm giving you a fat lip, 2 black eyes, and a broken nose for the sheer pain of watching that crapfest... It can't hold a candle ot the verson with Arnold."
My favourite line from the movie... ‘Sue me, dickhead....’ I quote it every time I jump a taxi on a Friday night when I’m drunk af and don’t have the money for a taxi, but they already drove me home
Just think if all of this was a memory implant and after the movie ends Doug wakes up at total recall, he would have memories of murdering his wife, co-workers and a shitload of other cannon fodder. How he could adjust back to normal life after that? In my opinion the "secret agent" implant was always just a prayer for psychosis, anyone who gets that will remember themselves killing other people and that seriously can't be healthy for normal persons mind.
"Why does space travel become more dangerous over time?" Probably the same reason everything else gets less safe over time: Budget cuts.
Or cooperate espionage. Those Total Recall people were not exactly saints.
Space travel is pretty dangerous.
At least they gave Quaid a full refund. Not many other corporations do that these days.

This is the Paul Verhoven bridge between Robocop and Starship Troopers.
It has the gritty and raunchy violence of RoboCop, but it also has the larger scale and space military that would be prominent in Starship Troopers.
