Long Ring Long Land was important for the crew and the readers to bond with Robin, before that arc she was still pretty much an outsider that invited herself into the crew and then went out on adventures by herself always being distant But the competition actually forced her to cooperate and interact with everyone else, then on its climax we are introduced to Kuzan who specifically targets Robin, and the crew has to come together to defend her, all of that just after we spend a mini arc hanging with her on what was pretty much a festival about testing the bonds of a crew Neither Water seven nor Enies Lobby would have been as impactful without the set up and ground work that Long Ring Long Land did, people have to remember that before that arc we still had Zoro saying that he was gonna cut Robin if she acted suspicious while they were on Skypeia
While this is true, it's not the case that Oda couldn't have progressed the plot at the same time. I have no idea what that would have looked like, but I doubt that Oda's only goal (outside of comedy) was to show off Robin, who panel-for-panel didn't really do all that much during the Davy Back.
I agree, seeing them have to work together right before an arc where the crew essentially falls apart was great set up. Theres some great luffy and ussop moments which makes their fight even more devastating to watch
Exactly, you always hear people say they want more moments of the SHs just hanging out and working together and yet those same folks crap on Long Ring Long Land and even arcs like TB for being slow, unnecessary, only hype at the end, etc. etc. Yet both of these arcs are full of SH moments of them working, bantering, and fighting together - without some greater overarching threat to distract us. I would love for there to be even more value for LRLL and Davy Back fights as a concept in this final saga.

So basically the kid pirates have to survive long enough to “Lay eyes on shanks” plus kids power would be great for DBF

I have always loved the concept of the Davey Back fight ever since it was introduced in Long Ring and it would be really fitting to have it come back with the straw hats and red haired pirates. Having the Poneglyph rubbings and locations on the line would add to the stakes as it is a tangible indicator of the SHs journey during the new world and how they’ve amassed strength. And seeing that put on the line for the potential to find the one piece and have Luffy be PK would be a sight to see. But that’s just me. Oda is writing this series; so who knows what he will do.
Oda would only do that because he knows there's no way to realistically have anyone outside of Luffy, Zoro, or Sanji winning actual fights against their Red Hair match-ups. Usopp being the best example.
Morj, I think you're on to the right idea but not quite. I think the best outcome would be that Kid gets defeated by Shanks and is captured and set to be killed. Then the Straw Hats show up, everything is jolly while the crews meet and everyone is reintroduced to the giants, but then Luffy hears about Kid. While not friends per say, I think Luffy wouldn't be okay with Shanks killing him and either he or Ussop challenges the Red Hair pirates to a Davy Back fight. The stakes being Shanks let's Kid go if the Straw Hats win while Luffy hands over his Road Poneglyphs if he loses. This makes more sense since Luffy and Shanks' crews are more evenly alligned for competitions than having a three way game where it'd basically be Kid and Killer versus two well padded out crews. It'd give Ussop a chance to shine against his dad in a competition and by possibly being the one who mentions the game as a solution. And I think overall it fits the characters and puts them in a good place to end Kid's story. He'd feel completely embarrassed to have been beaten and then his life saved by Luffy, giving him the chance to finally acknowledge Luffy as his better and pull out of the race for PK. And I also believe this would be showcase to Shanks that Luffy really has the right attitude to become Pirate King. He doesn't have to kill his enemies to overcome them, but rather finds a way to best them, earn their respect, and grow further. Like Mihawk said, Luffy's greatest strength is being able to get people on his side and once Shanks sees that Luffy can get even a ruthless Captain Kid to set aside his rampaging and admit defeat with admiration, he'll know Luffy has to be the one to go to Laugh Tale and claim the One Piece.

I love the idea of a 3 way Davey Back that turns into a lowkey training arc. Imagine the Straw Hats and Kidd pirates ask for haki training or information since they already have the ponegliffs.
unlikely it would be that sort of training. Luffy and Kid have defeated emperors. The whole point of Luffy meeting Shanks so late was that he had to be on the same level. I'm not saying both wouldn't hone their skills and get stronger through battling Shanks, they absolutely would. But I can't ever see any one of them outright asking Shanks for training. That would devalue their (and especially Luffys) current status and what they've achieved. A Katakuri-like scenario is very possible, where they grow in strength by fighting the Red hair pirates.
What if Kid and Law both get washed in their fights as a way to show how strong the remaining Yonko are. Them getting dominated would serve as a warning to Luffy about the challenges to come.
Hopefully Oda has Kidd show out. Have him unlock Advanced King’s Haki and improve his move set from Wano. Also show why Big Mom dodged those animal attacks from Kidd. Maybe they had Haki in them and exploded on impact? Idk, I just want a Kidd to show why Oda had plans for him.

I had a very similar analysis of the dynamic between Kidd and Shanks in this chapter. I think Oda is setting up something very interesting, he's not gonna just let Kidd have another go at Shanks and be instantly defeated even though we all assume Shanks and his crew are legions above literally everyone else in the story, let alone Kidd. It looks like it was Beckman that caused Kidd to lose his arm and not Shanks -- which would mean that it's possible Kidd never got the chance to stand face to face with Shanks. I think that Kidd and Shanks have some type of connection to one another given how fervent Kidd has behaved in pursuit of a meeting. What if they also have a mentor/disciple relationship, but one that is far more strained due to a shared history? In that case I don't think Kidd is going to pick a fight with Shanks but instead there is going to be a major conversation to service some much needed exposition. We simply don't know much about Shanks after all this time and this would neatly slot in Kidd's past.

One thing that could indicate this theory could work is the fact that shanks wants kids poneglyph rubbings, kid also wants something on elbaf and that is the man marked by fire assuming that it is indeed Saul

Kuma is also being set up as the way for the strawhats to escape egghead island. He's on his way there and with his devil fruit he can send flying the ship with the crew away from the 100 navy ships that will inevitably surround egghead island. This escape fits perfectly with your narrative. It's a fast way of travel, so they can get to Elbaf quickly and maybe interrupt the fight, giving way to an organic development of the threeway davy fight

i read a fan theory before that speculated that, if corss guild ever had a davy back fight with the straw hats, Buggy would face a "swordsman" against zoro in a duel. We would expect mihawk, Only for it to be Cabaji. It then went on to talk about how it could potentially pull off a reverse Baratie, where zoro takes mihawks place and utterly thrashes Cabaji. But Cabaji being so devoted to his captain and his trust in him, would pull something similar to zoro. "why do you refuse to step back?" "Because i would lose something important, the trust of my captain, and that i would never be able to get back to where i stand right now." Imagine if, in the case of cross guild ever facing the straw hats in a davy back fight, Oda could potentially set up someone to chase zoro after he eventually takes down mihawk himself and becomes the greatest. I kind of believe that the best use Oda can have for Kid right now is as a reason for Luffy and Shanks to clash, if Luffy gets there in time he would not let Shanks harm (really harm) Kid and if he arrives late and Kid is dead or badly hurt, i think Luffy would confront shanks in a way that might change his perfect perspective of the man.
I don’t think luffy cares as much about kid as he does abt someone like law for example. They’ve never really had a bonding moment so I don’t really see luffy going out of his way to save kid or being pissed at shanks for killing him.

I think the SH grand fleet is coming to Elbaf and the history changing event that we teased by the narrator is a showdown with Luffy and Shanks on the Giant Warrior Island
1 - Shanks is just chilling possibly because he dealt with Barto already. Barto is captured on Elbaf
2 - Hajrudin is from Elbaf and Kid recently took down big mom who Hajrudin has long standing beef with
3- I think Kid will inadvertently rescue Barto during his attack in the RHP and while he’s battling with Shanks lowering level forces the SHGF will come to save Barto because Harjrudin alerted the gang. (Let’s be honest, Kidd needs all the help he can get in this fight) All out war with break out.
4- Kidd will finally get his audience/showdown with Shanks and shanks will defeat him. Kid will be sparred by Loki for his BM feat but the Grandfleet and Kid pirates will have been defeated
5- Buggy gets word of this entire situation and realizing Luffy will not stand still he reaches out to Shanks with a grand idea. Settle the dispute with a Davey Back Fight winner takes all but let him sell tickets! Buggy needs to pay Crocodile back and this would be a huge event and Oda highlighted he’s got top tier connections and printing/publishing folks with cross guild AND it fights the circus theme of his crew. Cross guild will cover security..like Buggy tried to do in Stampede.

I love the idea of a 3 way Davey Back that turns into a lowkey training arc. Imagine the Straw Hats and Kidd pirates ask for haki training or information since they already have the ponegliffs.
unlikely it would be that sort of training. Luffy and Kid have defeated emperors. The whole point of Luffy meeting Shanks so late was that he had to be on the same level. I'm not saying both wouldn't hone their skills and get stronger through battling Shanks, they absolutely would. But I can't ever see any one of them outright asking Shanks for training. That would devalue their (and especially Luffys) current status and what they've achieved.
A Katakuri-like scenario is very possible, where they grow in strength by fighting the Red hair pirates.
What if Kid and Law both get washed in their fights as a way to show how strong the remaining Yonko are. Them getting dominated would serve as a warning to Luffy about the challenges to come.

@Martín Mayo As people claim he's sorta like Luffy without plot armor, but I feel like in Elbaf it'll be different for him, he may be an idiot for trying to challenge Shank's entire army but since the odds seem so highly stacked against him I feel like Oda is definitely trying to play him as the underdog and I feel like he'd do decently in a fight against Shanks (like Law vs. Blackbeard). Also people sorta forget that Kid is one of the people who defeated Big Mom, which the giants despise, so that's definitely going to play into something.

I had a very similar analysis of the dynamic between Kidd and Shanks in this chapter. I think Oda is setting up something very interesting, he's not gonna just let Kidd have another go at Shanks and be instantly defeated even though we all assume Shanks and his crew are legions above literally everyone else in the story, let alone Kidd.

oh with all this set up for the davy back fight i wonder if it will be revealed that the reason Kaido never went to Marineford is because he lost a Davy Back fight against Shanks. that would be pretty funny and maybe we could get more of kaido in flashbacks.
It looks like it was Beckman that caused Kidd to lose his arm and not Shanks -- which would mean that it's possible Kidd never got the chance to stand face to face with Shanks. I think that Kidd and Shanks have some type of connection to one another given how fervent Kidd has behaved in pursuit of a meeting. What if they also have a mentor/disciple relationship, but one that is far more strained due to a shared history? In that case I don't think Kidd is going to pick a fight with Shanks but instead there is going to be a major conversation to service some much needed exposition. We simply don't know much about Shanks after all this time and this would neatly slot in Kidd's past.

Kuma is also being set up as the way for the strawhats to escape egghead island. He's on his way there and with his devil fruit he can send flying the ship with the crew away from the 100 navy ships that will inevitably surround egghead island.
This escape fits perfectly with your narrative. It's a fast way of travel, so they can get to Elbaf quickly and maybe interrupt the fight, giving way to an organic development of the threeway davy fight

On a side note, it may not be possible for the Straw Hats to reach Elbaf by the time this potential Davy Back fight starts... Idk man, feels like we would have to resolve the Among Us situation on Egghead and we also have Kizaru and Saturn gunning for Egghead. Might be a close call, but I'm not confident the Straw Hats will reach on time.

i read a fan theory before that speculated that, if corss guild ever had a davy back fight with the straw hats, Buggy would face a "swordsman" against zoro in a duel. We would expect mihawk, Only for it to be Cabaji. It then went on to talk about how it could potentially pull off a reverse Baratie, where zoro takes mihawks place and utterly thrashes Cabaji. But Cabaji being so devoted to his captain and his trust in him, would pull something similar to zoro.

I want this to happen, more than 'the raid wiil fail'. Don't let us down Morj!
A "stretch" but I find quite interesting, the first one takes place in a land where stretched out one way. Add another man, another dimension, and its in a land where everything is stretched out in both ways, in giants land
To add on to that, there is plenty of rivalry between Cross Guild and the mentioned crews. Specially between Shanks and Mihawk
I kind of believe that the best use Oda can have for Kid right now is as a reason for Luffy and Shanks to clash, if Luffy gets there in time he would not let Shanks harm (really harm) Kid and if he arrives late and Kid is dead or badly hurt, i think Luffy would confront shanks in a way that might change his perfect perspective of the man.
I don’t think luffy cares as much about kid as he does abt someone like law for example. They’ve never really had a bonding moment so I don’t really see luffy going out of his way to save kid or being pissed at shanks for killing him.
