I think you can tell how happy he is about this role and film. He must’ve felt like it was a joyful breath of creativity and fun in his long and very successful career!
As his career tends to be filled with various amounts of horrifying, tragic, violent and authoritarian characters seeing him in delightfully silly role was such a testament to his acting ability. Really showed his comedic talent.
Ralph's performance was brilliant: he was charming, hilarious and on point !! Love this movie and watch it over many times to enjoy and laugh at this character* Wes Anderson also absolutely my favourite Director** he really is a movie making genius and I love all of his work

He comes off a bit bashful about this role, you notice it when he's talking about "favouring older ladies," but I really expected him to be the almost the opposite! He plays it all so coolly on film, M. Gustave is so goddamn suave, but I guess it's actually an affectation *on top of* Ralphe's natural charm.

I only ever saw Ralph in thrillers, or as malignant monsters. This is my favorite role he's ever played ever.
