Installed mine today! Your video was perfect. Only thing I got stuck in was removing two of the plugs on back of the radio. You turned and cover the lens when disconnection so I ended up leaving them connected for fear of breaking them! Great video! Thanks for your comment and questions. 1) Yes, there is a built in microphone, and you can add an external one as an option. 2) You can install an app called Headunit Reloaded to enable Android Auto. You plug you original phone cable into one of the USB ports and away you go. Brilliant app and I used it most of the time I had it.
This looks really interesting. Does the unit respond to voice commands via the voice command button on the steering wheel? If it does respond to voice commands, I think you should do a video on this functionality because isn't that where we really want this to go!!
Hey :) First of all I would like to thank you a lot for all videos you have posted. I have learned so much from them. I have just installed a similar system in my Z4 according your guidelines. My Z4 for do not have rear camera, just rear & front parking sensors. The new display do not seem to react to the reverse gear and do not switch parking sensors radar on. In order to see it I have to switch back to the old OEM system. I have experimented with settings and different camera types but nothing seem to work...any ideas?

@michegansky in the link, there are two drop-down options the first obe is to have the idrive controller included (i.e., for owners without original iDrive), on the first drop-down, you choose "no screen" this tells them you don't have OE iDrive so they include the controller 👍

Thank you. I'll check the languages for you. As for Android 9, I'm aware that some other BMW models have had this but not the e89 yet. There is an update due out in the next week or so that will include ID7 but I'm not sure if anything to do with 9 will be included. The new units now include 8 core processors and 4gb ram.
@@BMWZ4Mods I have seen your very nice video and so I ordered one for my Z4 S23i. Came today and was installed immediatley. It is the new unit with Android 9. The factory setting menues and options are a little bit different, but general function is very similar (if not identical) to your unit. The only thing that is not so nice with the hardware delivered is that the iDrive controller is not an original BMW part. It does not fit 100% (which the seller had already told me before I ordered! He said he could not get one for the E89 atm.) and it does not have the tilting function of the original ones (left, right, back and forward).

Thank you, I'm glad the video was of help. There are two options.... 1) Move the GPS antenna (assuming you've placed it under the grill on top of the dash) to above the grill. 2) Install an app called "GPS Keeper Lite", this helps lock the last known GPS location for faster start up of the sat nav. I'd suggest trying the second one first, I did this to mine and really noticed the difference. The problem with the antenna location is that the grill is metal and creates a Faraday cage affect stopping the GPS signal. Hope that helps.

Soo i turned around the GPS antenna under the grill and place it on the plastic under it. That's it and it works perfect for me, without seeing it above the grill and without getting lose the GPS signal. I installed the gps test app from the android store and it founds directly 20 satellites and Google Maps does work great again too. This is an excellent video, thank you! Is it possible to list the specifications for the screw driver heads and the trim removal tools that you used? I apologize if this is a stupid request. Also, what is your opinion of mounting the gps antenna to the back of the display? I understand that the gps will work best if it has a clear view out the window (to the constellations), and that spot might be good so that it does not conflict with the dash speaker (for premium audio setups).
Thank you, glad you liked it and I hope it was useful. The Torx bits I used were T8 & T15 and and any cross head screws I used PZ2 bits for. As for the trim removal tool just search on eBay, Amazon, AliExpress etc they normally sell really cheap but can damage easily. I do have some metal ones for other panels like the door cards and the two piece stud buttons. I've had a look and you would have to have the GPS receiver at the wrong angle if you did that, I'm not saying it won't work but it may not pick up as well I'm really not sure. Personally I'd go through the dash over to the passenger side and bring it out between the A pillar trim and the windscreen and stick it to the top of the dash there, it'll pick up nicely.

just to clarify regarding APK batch update. Android runs on apk installer files similar to exe files on windows for apps. if you want to install apps on it via apk that would be the method. For example, hypothetically if there was an app in AppStore that is paid for and for whatever reason the "developer," sent you a test apk to trial you would put it on a usb or sd card locate that apk find the file and it would install the app.
Hi thanks for the video, I’ve successfully installed mine following your instructions. Very pleased with the unit however a bit disappointed with the supplied idrive controller (no forwards backward and side to side movements) which reduces the ease of use in menus. Therefore I have bought a stock BMW e89 idrive controller but the connector is different. I understand they both use CANbus so it seems feasible to connect this to the system. Have you got any experience of this on or any advice on how I can adapt the lead
Thanks for the comment. As far as I'm aware you cannot use the OEM iDrive controller with this unit unless you already have the full iDrive system. I say this because I would assume the control board within the new unit will be set up to only work with the electronics within the new screen. Even if it did work you wouldn't get the extra features like side to side and forward and back options as these would not be set up in the software.
I suppose I was considering this is possible as both controllers use CANbus and there is the option of Idrive A or Idrive B in settings. My thinking was I could make an adapter plug for 12v +, ground, CANbus H, CANbus L, however I must admit my knowledge is very limited and maybe I’m at risk of screwing things up lol

I fitted one in my Z4, no an idrive machine. My dash board does not show a car signage in the middle and not show any signage when doors open. Does any know why?
The one in my video is an early Android 8.1 version, later in the year they did and OS update which I installed on mine and I lost the car/door open image. Also these were not available on the Android 9 units as well, but I believe they have now brought it back for the newer Android 10 units that have just come out.

They are available from many places, ebay, various specialist companies, Aliexpress etc. Aliexpress being the best on price (they are ALL made in China anyway, so the people selling them for upwards of twice the price haven't got a better quality version!) Just search for "BMW E89 Android " and you'll find what you need. I recommend looking for Android 9, running a 6 core processor with 4 GB ram, some sellers are selling the older Android 8.1, 4 core processor and only 2gb ram for the same price so be careful. Also if you want it make sure that it contains the iDrive controller (a lot dont include it!!) Hope that helps.
I am having problems with that company. They invoiced me for a unit with inferior specs vs their website, they won’t have the configuration that I paid for and they said that it won’t be available for a “long time”, and now they are not issuing a refund even thought they agreed to do so. To be clear, they haven’t shipped anything. Not a good way to operate a business.

Aliexpress has many different dealers selling this item at inferior cost. I ordered mine on aliexpress and installed it. They all get it from the same factory.
K R All these units are identical. You can have apple mirroring which mirrors exactly what your iphone screen looks like OR apple car play: the car play is extra with all these dealers but would buy it from ebay or aliexpress for 32 dollars shipping included. The car play dongle plugs into 1/2 of the usb cables and the apple cable plugs into the dongle and looks exactly like carplay

If you contact the original supplier they may be able to help. They'll probably will want a screenshot of the software/firmware screen so they know what you currently have.

It will connect to an Apple phone either via the Carplay dongle or you can connect via Bluetooth. Both ways work very well.

Yes if you have PDC then this will be displayed on the screen.

I fitted one in my Z4, no an idrive machine. My dash board does not show a car signage in the middle and not show any signage when doors open. Does any know why?
The one in my video is an early Android 8.1 version, later in the year they did and OS update which I installed on mine and I lost the car/door open image. Also these were not available on the Android 9 units as well, but I believe they have now brought it back for the newer Android 10 units that have just come out.

Yes it does, you'll have a coloured visual display. You'll need to set the appropriate setting for it to come up.

Yes, the newer ones come with Apple CarPlay built-in as well 👍

They are available from many places, ebay, various specialist companies, Aliexpress etc. Aliexpress being the best on price (they are ALL made in China anyway, so the people selling them for upwards of twice the price haven't got a better quality version!) Just search for "BMW E89 Android " and you'll find what you need. I recommend looking for Android 9, running a 6 core processor with 4 GB ram, some sellers are selling the older Android 8.1, 4 core processor and only 2gb ram for the same price so be careful. Also if you want it make sure that it contains the iDrive controller (a lot dont include it!!)

I am having problems with that company. They invoiced me for a unit with inferior specs vs their website, they won’t have the configuration that I paid for and they said that it won’t be available for a “long time”, and now they are not issuing a refund even thought they agreed to do so. To be clear, they haven’t shipped anything. Not a good way to operate a business.

Aliexpress has many different dealers selling this item at inferior cost. I ordered mine on aliexpress and installed it. They all get it from the same factory.

K R All these units are identical. You can have apple mirroring which mirrors exactly what your iphone screen looks like OR apple car play: the car play is extra with all these dealers but would buy it from ebay or aliexpress for 32 dollars shipping included. The car play dongle plugs into 1/2 of the usb cables and the apple cable plugs into the dongle and looks exactly like carplay

@BMW Z4 Mods, thanks for a well explained video, it really empowers me to make this upgrade. I read all the comments and tried to contact the factory but their contact information is reaching to an employee that no longer works with them as she told me.

As for the LVDS connector don't worry just tell them you don't have iDrive already and they'll sell the correct one.

I installed this a couple years ago using your perfect install instructions. Today I was wondering how to check if there is a firmware update or an Android OS update that can be installed? Anyone have a link to these files?
If you contact the original supplier they may be able to help. They'll probably will want a screenshot of the software/firmware screen so they know what you currently have.
