I love the slavic folk music and peter stormares acting paired with the accent, the filthy grizzled cloths and unwashed beard definitely gives the feel of a Eastern European slaughterhouse employee and old slavic god of darkness in human form
My grandfather was Lithuanian and was a math teacher rather than a cow slaughterer, and for all his faults never threw stuff at guests. But somehow this scene still reminds me of mums stories about him, don't know why. Might just be the cigarettes.
I read something the other day suggesting Czernobog was actually another name for Volos/Veles, the Slavic god of magic, the underworld, music, cattle, poetry, etc. He was probably cognate with the Lithuanian god Velinas (before Velinas came to mean "devil," that is) and the Latvian god Velns. What's funny is that these three Balto-Slavic gods are probably all versions of the same original Proto-Indo-European god as Odin is. Which means that two versions of the same god are talking to each other in this scene.
@@henryfellowsmoss3827 confusing (the history of. folklore usually is) but cool! One issue I have with the book and tv series, we don't get enough of this kind of information, not in this detail.
@@agenttheater5 I'm glad you found it interesting! It's to be expected that the show wouldn't go into that kind of detail. A lot of information like that comes from my field, Indo-European studies, which is pretty obscure. Baltic mythology is a highly valuable source of data for us, and it's a shame that it isn't as popular as Greek or Norse mythology.
A funny bit - the scandinavian name "Wotan!" than Chernobog uses, sounds precisely like the Russian "Vot on!", meaning "Here he is!" They flat-out tell us the true name of Wednesday, yet it flies completely over our heads.
"Wednesday" flat out tells us the true name of Wednesday. The sound change would have probably worked like this: 1. Old English Wodnes dæg ('Woden's day) 2. This becomes Wœdnes dæg by umlaut because of the "-nes" part. 3. Front rounded vowels become unrounded, so Wœdnes becomes Wednes. 4. The E in "-nes" drops out because it's unstressed and doesn't follow a sibillant. 5. Wednsday 6. The first D drops out, because "dns" is not an acceptable syllable coda in English. 7. We're left with something that sounds like Wensday, but it retains the spelling Wednesday, since we haven't bothered to update our spelling in 700 years.
Pretty sure that is what they wanted you to think when Odin himself said he was going there to "get his hammer" but stuff like that us why I live this story. It plays with expectations without insulting the viewer
