As Peter explained, the song is about a young Christian/Catholic woman that grew up so confined and restrained that the only sort of sexual image of a man she was exposed to was Jesus on the crucifix on her wall. The music video (short version) for this kind of shows that, and then, Peter becoming her 'first', leads into the idea of 'Jesus Christ looks like me.'

  • @Sanguine_Addiction

So regarding the whole "Jesus Christ looks like me". Peter once said in an interview that he was walking around one day and some shouted at him "Hey, you look like Jesus Christ!". And, jokingly, the Green Man replied "No...Jesus Christ looks like me".

I love this song for the music, i don`t give much importance to the lyrics. I understand why you don`t like the lyrics, but I believe most of Pete Steele lyrics don`t have to be taken so serioulsly, he has a very dark sense of humour. I don´t think he aims to provoke, he just seems to be always taking dark themes and mess with those topics just for fun.

Personally, the lyrics don't bother me. I'm Catholic and it's a very catholic song. I love lyrics and the song. It's not about Jesus having sex. It's more about Catholicism and guilt and how they're connected. There is also kink involved. He writes a lot about power dynamics. The "October Rust" album is mostly about being a male submissive. "Christian Woman" addresses this as a need to be worshipped like Jesus. I get why that makes people uncomfortable, but the lyrics shouldn't be taken literally. Lol I think you need to be Catholic or kinky to fully grasp it. I could talk about this song for hours. It's beautiful, delicate, and just perfect to me lol

You’re close but, by Peter Steeler’s admission it’s a bit more blasphemous as the woman the song is about has sexual fantasies about Jesus while having sex with her boyfriend, which is where the “she needs Corpus Christi” and “Jesus Christ looks like me” parts come into play. Is there guilt in the song? Probably not because of the “prefers punishment” line. I’m also Catholic and was initially shocked by the lyrics back in ‘93 but, the song was always tongue in cheek and not really meant to be as offensive as what’s on the surface. The music is what’s important.

I think you're a little off target here Lauren. Christian Woman is one of Type-O's best songs, and Pete could have sang about what he had for lunch that day and it would have sounded just as good to my ears as him singing about a Christian Woman and him looking like Jesus Christ.
Type-O lyrical content is supposed to be ironic, sexual, and have a million puns in it to make the listener think, and maybe even get a chuckle out of the song.
The song itself is great and the performance of the music is as great as it's lyrical content, to my ears, anyway.
It's Type-O negative and nothing is off the counter and Pete didn't give one eff if anyone liked it, he liked it and that's all that mattered to Pete.
I still think it's top 3 all time Type-O Negative songs.

Kenny (Guitar) always does the higher backing vocals. He takes care of the pitches Peter couldn't hit. Also the lyrics are totally tongue in cheek and not meant to be taken seriously. Pete never understood why people enjoyed his music, he said many times that the world must be full of deaf people. He would actually call people's parents at some shows on stage and tell them where their kids were give them their money back and kick them out of the show just to prove his point. Eventually he did get over it and just continued on making music but when they went Gold the first time for Bloody Kisses he could never understand why.

The "She Needs" is done by guitarist Kenny Hickey. He also does the "I don't need love" in Anesthesia and the "So you want to go out because it's raining and blowing . . . Along with Black Number One, this was The song that helped them break through into mainstream some thirty years ago by now. Like it or not, there’s no way you could have gone through your Typo O journey without getting to this one. It’s usually the second or third song, you would stumble upon getting into them. So it’s anything but an obscure deep cut in their catalogue; we genually like this song.
It’s totally fair that you don’t like the lyrics for this one, though I find the lyrics for wolf moon more gross.
Anywho, before his death, he re-found his Christian faith which is quite apparent in the lyrics for their last record. The song “These Three Things” being the most explicit example of this.

I have to say, this one surprised me. I voted for it and surely by now you know that I don't care about over reactions, etc. This is just an awesome song and one of my favorites from this band. Believe it or not, it was also one of their bigger hits. I'm probably not alone in my opinion. Before your "Wolf Moon" reaction, I would have been hesitant to vote for this based on the lyrics. However, you didn't seem to mind them on that one and they are similarly "spicy". I know there is an extra religious layer in this one, so that must be what put it over the top for you, which I can understand. I'll keep that in mind for future considerations.

As far as these lyrics, I don't find them spicy. I find them offensive, and I'm not a particularly religious person. But I read this as sexualizing God and I don't want any part of that. We're between the thighs, then wanting to feel God deep inside, and it's just too much. Whether it's literal or not, that was my take on it. So I'll back away slowly and binge Anesthesia, please.
BUT remove the God part and it's fine. Go to town on yourself, Christian woman. I don't care.

@@MusicCatsandCoffee Peter's point was to offend with this song he wanted christian's to picket their shows and scream for his blood. "What you think I care if you wanna kill me? Go ahead, Do it, it would save me a bullet" except from his last interview before he died in 2010.

@@MusicCatsandCoffee I completely understand. I picked up on the offense and totally get it. In fact, I would take a guess that "offense" is one of the things Peter was hoping to get out of this at the time. I think I've mentioned this before, but please avoid "Prelude to Agony" at this point. I don't care how many people recommend it to you.
As a side note, I hope you get to "These Three Things" at some point which is from their final album. You may be surprised to see where Peter was at spiritually by that point. I know I was.

Our nature, human nature is not only need to enjoy beauty, but also dark sides, sexual also, which are not only beautiful waterfalls, singing birds, romantic guitar plsy but also simple animal sexual lust which drives our nature also. And that song Has it. For somebody it will seem dark, sinister, but for other it will be expression of our true binature, dark and light, human and animal, good and evil...

Forget the lyrics. How could you listen to those amazing guitar riffs, the amazing bass lines, the awesome keyboards & just the way the vocals mesh with the music, and now hear why people recommended this song?
As a Christian who is not at all a fan of the lyrics, this song is incredible musically.

I've looked for bands similar to them but no one quite compares. The closest feeling I've ever got to them are from the bands h.i.m and this one finnish but I would love to see you do a reaction to! So if you get the chance please react to.

Type O has been my favorite since October Rust came out. Everything before October Rust was meant to emote shock value; just look at the origins of everything in Carnivore. Musically, I think they were finding their footing with Bloody Kisses but the lyrics just didn't hit it with me like subsequent albums.

Hey. I hardly ever comment on videos. I just wanted to say you have to remember Peter was very tongue in cheek with his lyrics. Hence the "her soul done medium well." I remember the very first song i heard by TON was when Bloody Kisses came out, and it was this song. They are one of my favorite bands. Hell, I have "TYPE O NEGATIVE" tattooed across my stomach. HaAhAhaHa. After Peter died, I went to NYC and to Prospect Park where he has a memorial tree and bench. Hopefully, the ring I left is still hanging on the tree limb. I really enjoyed your reaction. I was laughing at your apparent uncomfortableness at the lyrics, but was intrigued by what you enjoyed about the song. Anyway, great job. BTW, I love your voice. I have a thing for voices.

It won because this was their breakthrough hit, it's a good song. I don't know what is offensive about the lyrics, I know there are multiple ways to understand them but the idea of a sinful person attempting redemption by taking the Lord inside of them is the very meaning of the eucharist and the most troubling aspect is mystical transubstantiation itself and you can't lay that at the feet of Mr Steele.

This was the 1st and only song I ever heard on the radio back in the 90s from them. I was hooked, and became one of my top bands of all time. Just a different vibe from the grunge of the day. We had pretty much lost the hair band stuff of the 80s and I wasnt o fan of the Nirvana garbage that was the rage at the time.
    RIP Peter Steele.
