Back in 1964 we, Barbara Meyer and I would swan dive from the highest point of the cliff. Jumping feet first was stupid. Clearing the submerged rock shelf was the only obstacle and we cleared it easily. Rule # 1. Don’t belly flop!
I jumped off of the high cliff in 1980. Now that I'm much older I doubt I would do it (especially with the fine). For whatever reason I've become more afraid of heights year-by-year. I almost drowned sliding down those rocks. There's one part that sucked me way under the water and I had troubles getting to the top. It seemed like I was getting flushed down a very large toilet. Having no idea what I was getting into, I didn't take a deep breath before going under. I kept hitting the rocks on the walls as I tried to ascend, and just before I ran out of breath, I found an air pocket with a couple of my friends chatting away. That air pocket probably saved my life. So, I racked the shit out of myself jumping off the cliff (keep your legs crossed, men!) and almost drowned on the same day.
I was a jumper from '81 til the early '90's when the fines started. The fine was 1 or 200 back then. The little caves and air pockets were the best. I wonder if they are still there since Taum Sauk breached.
My brother jumped off the bluff in the 1950's when Joseph Desloge owned the property before it was donated to the Missouri park system. We were friend's of the property caretaker and went to the Shut-Ins regularly every year.

People have died jumping off that cliff. And not just a few.. The rangers hate dragging bodies all the way back. Not to mention the paperwork.

Last time i crossed the fence and jumped i got hit with a fine a d they wanted to put me in jail !
This cliff is a money maker for park rangers. They have been known to hide out and ticket whoever jumps.
