Cliff Jumping at Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park!

- Spent a week exploring Johnson Shut-Ins, Elephant Rocks, and Taum Sauk Mountain. Definitely a must see if you live in Missouri. The Cliff Jumping was amazing at the Shut-Ins as the water was clear.

I first dove, as in head first, off the highest cliffs at Johnson's Shut-Ins as a 13 year old in 1963. I continued to dive there until 1978 as a 28 year old, Then, in 2001 when I was 51 years old, I made my last dive. As a teen or a young man, I would simply walk up to the edge and dive off. At 51, I recall standing on the precipice for several minute with legs shaking and thinking about all of the things that could go wrong. The highest cliff was about 53 feet tall. Great fun!

We jumped it yesterday. The water is a little higher this time of year, so the bottom shelf is barely visible. I'm 40 and my step daughter is 13, and I couldn't keep my 8 year old step daughter off of the smaller one. We jumped the 30-35 footer a couple of times until the rangers showed up and shut it down.
It's state funded, and it has swim at your own risk signs everywhere. The shut in would be a lot more dangerous than the cliffs during high water. The restricted area should not be restricted. I would have rather jumped cliffs than stayed where everyone was smoking pot, drinking, pissing, and having intercourse! Rules are rules, but always evaluate the risk to reward. The cliffs were well worth the drive!

Nice place is the water cold?
I went there in 2015 jumped off the high bluff got out climbed back up and there was a ranger there waiting and arrested me took me to the park office got a big fine and released me and kicked me out. Haven’t been back since.
How much was the fine ?
@@joseC2013 I was way off on the date. It was actually 2003 before the Tom Sauk reservoir failure. It was like $250.00 then just guessing been a long time.

Diving is warned against and a number of people have died there doing stupid things. It ends up closed for others because of this kind of misuse.
Cliff jumping is prohibited in the Shut-ins. It is posted in the park and on their website. As you can see in the video, the rocks jut out quite a way and make it dangerous to cliff jump from the higher spots. Park rangers will arrest you and fine you if you are caught. You will probably be banned from the park. Go there and enjoy the water and don't risk getting hurt. I visited Johnson before the reservoir broke. Broke my heart as this is one of my favorite places in MO.

Even though this is a really well-done video, it's a prime example of what I hate: People BLATANTLY breaking the rules at places like this and make it worse for the rest of it. Don't be a douche. Follow the rules.
