This is the most beautiful documentary I've seen. A real ode to the old canarios. Thank you very much for making such a wonderful video, makes me proud to be Canary Island heritage. My grandfather had a lanza, we still have some land up the mountain that the shepherds still use for their cattle. I'ts wonderful how the canary islands is so connected to its past yet so few understand or promote this.
This is soooo much better than all the other videos I've seen on this, it actually shows it being used. Wow, those cliffs look terrifying, but also, awesome!
This is just what i've been needing when navigating the rocky terrain in South Texas! All the rivers here are surrounded by 10ft tall boulders and regular trekking poles arent sufficient. My friends and I usually have to manually climb and descend by hand. I cant wait to make a Saltadores pole.
Curiously, the state of Texas is closely related to Canary Islanders, who were the founders of San Antonio, maybe you can contact some Islanders association.

Hi Thomas The Regaton( metallic end) is usually done by traditional metal workers in the Canaries. You maybe able to find some of them online or maybe some adventures sports shops that sell them online. This is a link to a video that shows how to do a lanza: th-cam.com/video/v2t1L0E3_18/w-d-xo.html I hope it helps. Cheers Antonio
Asheanae...Do you live in UK? Well, many people, in winter and summer, from the whole EU used to visit the Canary Islands on holidays. If you someday came to La Palma island, ask about me in the National Park of La Caldera de Taburiente. I,d be very pleasant to teach you everything about this amazing and tradicional sport.
Antonio. Thanks for the vid. I'm a mountaineer and live in BC in the Okanagan Valley. The terrain is perfect for this and I absolutely want to learn salto and push the sport. Are there any credible resources on the interwebs where one can learn this technique? -or does one just have to take it slowly and gradually learn to feel it?
Hi Shel I am not sure if there are any tutorials online but this video link has a lot of information about it. th-cam.com/video/v2t1L0E3_18/w-d-xo.html Cheers Antonio
Hi! I have recorded some tutorials about the techniques, so you can start to feel it, but I have not edit and upload yet. If you contact me tazaigo@gmail.com I let you now when I do it ;). This videos of Antonio are amaizing, maybe he could easily record some tutorials as well. Think about it Antonio!
Hola Antonio ! ¿No te quitan sensibilidad ?
I would love to more about techniques! Some of those cliff paths looked so vertical, how do you prevent yourself overshooting a landing? How do you make a garrote? I live in the UK and would like to practice this skill!

Hi Asheanae My apologies for the late reply, I just saw your comment. After you practice Salto del Pastor Canario for a while, the lanza becomes an extension of yourself( in a way is like having a third 3 meters long extra leg) and you can feel the terrain through it. Salto del Pastor's techniques allow you to control the speed and force of landing and you constantly have to adjust them for your needs. About the terrain, the Saltadores are use to read it and know exactly where to position themself to maximize safety. The making of a Garrote is a bit complex and my advice is to get a traditional expert to make it( specially the regaton). The best way to learn it form the UK is to go to the Canaries. Tomas is a very experience practitioner and La Palma is absolutely Majestic! Take care and I wish you luck on your exploration! Cheers Antonio
@@antoniopalmero4054 thank you so much for getting back to me! Yes I'd love to get out to the Canaries and commission a proper garrote! The problem at the moment is the UK is not dealing with the pandemic very well... it's likely going to be at least a year before travel, or even imports will be viably possible. Is there a way I can DIY a decent enough version in the mean time? I think I can get a 3 meter pole of eucalyptus, which is an extremely tough grained wood that works great for axe handles etc, so I think it should be good? And I have a local blacksmith that does a lot of weapons and reenactment work that could make a regaton?
Hi Wolfgang I usually use gloves to reduce heat. They reduce friction and avoid burning the hands as well as the building up of hard skin( which I can't afford due to my job). However, it is harder to slow down on some jumps as well as they decrease the general feeling of the lanza. My advice is to get your hands use to the lanza and maybe only use gloves when you think you need them. Cheers Antonio
This skilled looked like it would be really fun and enjoyable to have learned. That was until they put the camera the position that shows they are literally climbing down cliffs faces. Fuck that
Those cliffs are actually not sheer. The bubble-lens he's using gives a false vertical impression. We have lots of this terrain in Western Canada and traverse it regularly without rope & gear 🙂 ...anyway, it's time to make me a salto pole 🙃
@@_Solaris all of the other videos I've seen, the terrain appeared rather easily traversable.
