  • Douglas Rachac is a former Medtronic employee with a ton of professional knowledge about ICDs (implantable cardioverter defibrillators), as well as personal experience (he has one himself). In this short clip taken from the full Q&A episode I did with him, ‘In-Depth Q&A About ICDs: Former Medtronic Employee Douglas Rachac’, he shares the various things or situations that could trigger an ICD to fire or go off.
If you’d like to learn even more about ICDs after this short clip, check out the full Q&A episode I did with him here: • In-Depth Q&A About ICD...

My ICD was installed on 2021 due to I went into code blue in the hospital.
I received strong shocks...the last one was so f,*** hard it knocked me down and I was like imbalance..then on March of this year , I started to have chest pains, shortens of breath, dizziness and ended up in the hospital
Afterwards, I had no control of fainting spells, dizzy spells, shortens of breath. It is so depressing, because you don't know again if you are going to be shocked.
The medications were adjusted, and slowly but still going through the fainting spells that comes and unpredictably. Dizzy spells is slowly balancing.
Cardiologist had a serious talk about my health challenges. I would need a heart transplant.
The constant shocking of the defibrillator causes your heart to get scared and that's is not good.
One day at the time..that's all I can do.

The algorythm for treatment before shock is set for a specific bpm for s programed number of QRS intervals. It diesn't deliver therapy every time you reach the threshhold. If the rate is unsustained, it won't treat.

I was not aware of the different settings possible. Is it possible to set the level at a point where it would ONLY deliver the dreaded zappage is your heart actually stopped? Or more accurately if it could be set to only jolt if the patient is already unconscious? That is the only way I would accept one. Stay well all. Cheers

I received six inappropriate shocks due to AF 'confusing' the device - my meds and device settings were changed to hopefully move me out of the danger zone of this happening again.

Oewwhh, that's a lot... What confused the device? You know?

My question is, I use electric hair clippers, or did before I had my ICD installed 7-17-2024, I was wondering if it would cause a shock if I was cutting my hair or someone else's if they had an ICD? I have not been able to find a answer for that. Thanks.

I'll see if I can ask Doug to answer your question.

Hi, I went ahead and cut my hair the other day and had no problems, I didn't notice anything different. I used the wired and rechargeable hair clippers without and problems, of course I didn't hold them right next to the ICD either.
I also have been using Klipsch headphones without any effects to my system.
