    I really like what you two are doing on this rare c4! I am retired now, but I have had a career in the automotive industry since the 80’s and I wanted to share a bit of potential wisdom with you. I was a certified tech for Chevrolet, murcury and Nissan. I transitioned to doing electrical and autobody until I retired. My shop had a business partner that bought totaled c5 vettes and we had a special license to rebuild them.
    Since the start of fuel injection from GM, they require a bit of time to build fuel pressure. If any GM car or truck is out of fuel or has not been started in a long time, do not crank the engine. Make sure there is fuel, then turn the key on enough to make the dash cluster fully illuminate, then count to 5, then turn the key off for two seconds. Repeat that two more times, then crank the engine and it should start with no need to pump the gas pedal.
    If you have a fuel injected automobile that won’t start and you know there is fuel in the tank, do the same procedure. If your normal daily driver does the same thing and you have to do multiple key cycles to make it start, then there is a real chance you have a clogged fuel filter or a fuel pump that is ready for retirement.
    I have minimal time in c4’s, most of what I’ve done was with c5’s but my electrical knowledge is extensive. I’m happy to help if you need it. Have fun and stay safe!

      That is very useful information thankyou! You're right on the money with the fuelling issue! Hopefully my C5 is in good order as she starts right on the button!

    When starting a ZR-1, always hold the key to crank until the engine fired and running. This decreases the chance of a backfire and possibly blowing a vacuum hose off.
    You have a Service Engine Soon Light illuminated. Use the built in system to help you troubleshoot.
    The light under the back bumper is to help you see the spare tire when removing at night. If needed.

A decent plan and being progressive without getting ahead of yourselves. lt's also great to see that you recognize when you're tired and you could be making mistakes. For wiring repairs use the VW group crimp connections, simply neat and waterproof. Visiting a Audi/tps/vw dealer and ask for the crimp connections.. 4 different sizes. You will need the tool to crimp them. They can supply various thickness wires too.
    Dealers don’t solder anymore as the flux rusts and when tape up don’t provide a waterproof seal. Their connections self seal when heated. The dealer supplied connections are high quality.. not like cheap Halfords ones.

    F ya! perfect diagnosis, and troubleshooting. So proud of you guys! and yes, keep those spark plug wires!
    btw that chip I sent you eliminates the need for the key for full power plus the 1st to 4 gear lockout for economy. And changes the timing and some other stuff. be careful when you take the tires off. Look for the decal on the rim that says break the bead here or else you will damage the LPTWS… Low tire pressure warning system.. so funny back then with acronyms..
    also purchase the book “Corvette from the inside”.. by Dave McLellan. he was the chief engineer on these. Cheers boys!

      100% them plug wires are really nice. Nice to have the OEM ones on there tbh, the fit better and look better. The lockout for economy on the C5 is also kinda irritating... must remove that solenoid! Thankyou for the tip on the tyres, we will tell the tyre people to be mega careful. Obviously the LPTWS must be quite large on the C4s!

    There are two MAP sensors
    One is near the battery and is used for the secondary trigger
    The other is on the back and center of rear of the engine near firewall
    There is like a 3-inch long very small vacuum hose from the intake to MAP
    Common for that hose to blow off and without that MAP ECM cannot command injectors or timing correctly
    Below the ECM and battery, there are some fuses by left A-pillar
    The left gill panel has some bolts to get that panel out of the way
    Water drains down and really can corrode down there. Pull fuses, clean fuse panel and the tips of fuses
    I used to tell people to wrap in plastic to prevent water into that panel
    Those 16 fuel injectors were not designed for any Ethanol and would have been best to take them all off, check the O-rings and clean injectors and make sure they do not leak into cylinders but these injectors due to heat would be hard to last 30 years and function like new
    Verify good grounds from frame and engine block
    assure the wiring pins if wire loom to ECM are clean
    You really need at this point an OBD-I scanner
    Make sure the MAT sensor is functional
    For now leave Valet switch to OFF
    Looking into your ECM GM calibration
    ECM commands timing as to engine MAPs output
    starting from 400 RPM to 4,000 RPM and as to MAP in KPA starting at 25 KPA

      I have copied this message and saved it for safe keeping. I agree it is worth looking down them vents. I cleaned them out as they were all full of soil from years of vegetation! We had a similar problem with the PCM on the C5. Soaking wet! Since the car hasn't run in so long ethanol shouldn't be a big problem as in the UK we have only had 10% in fuel for the last few years and Will said he used super in it which 20 years ago was always ethanol free. We think the filter has failed or gunk in the line has gone through to the injectors. Its no big deal and we figure changing the injectors after this amount of time is sensible for reliability anyway. We will keep the old injectors in a box somewhere though! Thankyou for the help there and the support!

      It sounded like the hydraulic lifters took a few seconds to get any pressure up at all. But once oil reached them they quietened quickly. I'm not sure why they would take so long to build pressure after just days/weeks ago the dead engine turned over whilst it was being towed up the hill...

    • @Auto_Funk
      @Auto_Funk  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I would imagine it was due to the oil being totally drained and refilled/new filter. The new filter had a little oil in but since it is upside down it is difficult to totally fill it and fit it without pouring it everywhere. Thankfully they filled up in a second or so!

    This is good you flushed out the old, old oil just to get the worn oil out:)
    But I would highly non recommend you replace it with Mobil One Synthetic oil. I’ve ran it in my cars and it tends to shear the engine parts very easily. It’s very mediocre in tests people have ran. Having barely any ad packs in the Mobil One oil.
    For that car , you’d want to clean it out. For that I’d recommend you go for Pennzoil Ultra Platinum oil which is a great oil with lots of cleaning properties in the ad pack.
    Them after that go with Royal Purple if you like a very smooth running car. I have it in some of mine. Or Motul V300, and Redline 10W 40 (summer) or maybe a 5W 30 since you get of cold weather in the winters there. You’ll thank me later:) Great car!

    • @Auto_Funk
      @Auto_Funk  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Oh! Worth knowing, I have heard the ZR-1 likes a lot of Zinc content in the oil... So maybe a bit of research is required! Will look into the Royal Purple!
      The oil that is in it is just for a flush basically... The car at this point won't be doing any high revs hard work stuff. Its not the perfect oil but it will do a fair job of flushing it!

    Does the gasoline available in the UK use ethanol? In the US, gas usually contains up to 15% ethanol for the last 20 or so years. The design of the injectors in 1990 through 1992 ZR1s makes them prone to damage with prolonged exposure to ethanol. 1993 - 1995 cars have redesigned injectors that don't have that problem. Just something to consider if you can't get it to run smoothly - the injectors may need to be replaced.

    • @Auto_Funk
      @Auto_Funk  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      We have super 5% and regular has 10%. However due to the amount of time its been since this car last ran, there was no ethonol or perhaps 5% only put in previously. The 10% change came in only a few years ago.
      The way I get around it in older cars is to only put super 5% or Esso super (which is actually 0%)... it is expensive but you are of course getting more fuel for your money!

    Definitely a vacuum leak for the high idle, could just be a split perished hose rather than disconnected but either is likely! The spark wires - are they solid core? I imagine not, but solid core wires are pants and give you all manner of electromagnetic mess which was bad for a points ignition but way worse on an electronic ignition system. Otherwise I’d suspect the coil pack or its grounding. The fact you mentioned dodgy crusty ground posts in there before does make me wonder!
