@@WayStedYou Exactly my thoughts, but Scotch Super 33+ is not expensive and probably the highest quality conformal coating you can buy, and it's conveniently in a roll just like electrical tape. Oh wait, their the same exact thing, just a different method of application. Finger nail polish is what you use when you have no time to buy the correct stuff. Super 33+ is what you use if you don't want it to fail. Conformal coating is what we use if you do it for a living day after day, year after year.

here is a small tidbit for you:
The PS4 Pro has circa 3 models, no visual difference, only difference is in power usage and cooling by small margins.
The first model at launch is the hottest and loudest and uses the most power
Second model saves around 10 W and gets a bit less hot
And the third model, which I think is the one you get if you get new stock or the newer bundles is an improvement over both.
Idk how old those two PS4 pros are, but if your friends PS4 pro is newer, that is likely why it's quieter
true, I have the third revision and even before I applied liquid metal to it, I was playing RDR2 without the fan ever ramping up to a noticeable loudness and im sitting 1 meter away from the thing

You have to wait for the liquid metal to dry let it break in then check later on the future the sound test.
@@dafamousrh Liquid metal doesn't dry its not wet, its just existing in its liquid state that is between -19 to 1300 celcius . But what I think you are referring to is liquid metal forms a thin layer of alloy on the copper side of the heatsink that will result in some of it "drying up" as it binds with the copper layer, but it stops as soon as the layer has been formed, then no more will "dry up" that is why its important to apply it on both the die and copper when using copper heatsinks, the liquid metal wont adhere to nickel so its only needed on the die when using nickel heatsinks.
Electrochemically speaking, gallium(one of the ingredients of liquid metal) has a potential of -0.53 volts and copper has a potential of +0.334 volts. The difference between the two metals is going to create a "battery" with a potential of 0.864 volts.
Gradually this battery will deplete; as the gallium migrates over to the copper. You may have heard some stories about how gallium "dries up" and evaporates. In many of those cases it is likely that it acted like a battery and migrated over to and became part of the copper heat sink.

If you want to use electrical tape, clear the aluminium shim around the substrate on the APU. Your electrical tape is making the shim thicker, making the substrate distance to the heatsink a tad further (as you can see with your liquid metal application, it only contacts the middle part of the substrate. Remove the electrical tape, use conformant coating or clear nail polish.
it might be the editing, but maybe you should have blown clean the heatsink? the dust usually blocks the fin stack on the fan side

He should have as mine was the reason I took it apart as it sounded like a jet engine, I then put liquid metal on just because I had some.
just remember not to use the vertical stand when you use liquid metal, because eventually the liquid metal will start to ooze out between the heat sink and the processor.

Electrical tape was the right idea, it is what I do when I pop a processor apart to ensure none of it spreads. Good move there.
Black tape @ 6:24 - Yeah, not a great idea. My first thought was the thickness might interfere with the heatsink but also if any gallium got underneath the tape, you'd never see it. The adhesive is going to go weird over time, soft or hard, and make a mess. Best thing would have been protecting the capacitors with clear nail polish, then you'd be able to see everything. Liquid metal is just a bad idea in general, I'd never use it. For the couple degrees, it's not worth wondering if the gallium is ever going to drip and react badly with anything.

I think there was an issue with the first run of the PS4 pros. I replaced the stock thermal paste with Noctua NTH-1 and it still gets louder than my brother’s, which he got a year after it released.
Check the model number for both ps4 cuz there is several type for the same model, sony did this without giving any notice to do some minor improvements I guess..
may that fan designed to rotate at high rpm, don't to fear it's safe as long fan isn't broken.

I have the OG PS4 Pro and I just replaced the thermal paste with the same one you have. MY PS4PRO IS SILENT NOW! After 3 hours of gaming, no noticeable noise from the console at all! I made sure the paste was evenly covered on the surface of the APU die before putting back on the heatsink.
@@chickendinner5572 DId you use regular thermal paste? I replaced the thermal paste and it's still loud. But I just got liquid metal in the mail so we'll see if that fixes my jet fighter issue...
Is your PS4 PRO a launch model? They did some mild modification to improve sound/fan curve.

Using PVC (electrical) tape is idiotic (there, I said it), because a) it shrinks when heated and b) liquid metal WILL seep under it by capillary action.
That being said, it works like a charm replacing the silicone glue on desktop CPUs to prevent substrate flex.
Just use nail polish for insulation instead.
Always bend the heat sink bracket to maintain sufficient clamping pressure when reassembling. This will ensure the heat sink and APU are making good contact with each other and the new thermal paste. I didn’t the first time I cleaned my OG PS4 and it was even louder. I had to re-open it, re-clean, reapply thermal paste and then bend the bracket and now it’s like it’s brand new. I think I’m gonna copy what you did here and do this to my Pro exactly like you have.
In what mindset would you put it on the vertical stand with liquid metal on when console gpu's don't even have that much pressure towards the heatsink making it so that it can actually drip when having applied 2 much.

Hey the trick is not to screw down the heatsink to tight. I found out that the thermal paste gets pushed to the sides if you screw it down to tight. I used Gelid becuase it's real thick.
No it actually can eat i to your APU metal shell and heatsink for a lousy 3 or 3 degrees difference from a good quality thermal paste like Artic Silver 5, Kryonaut, and MX-4 its also highly conductive and can short on any little transistors.

Eletrically insulating around the core is very smart. Considering how cheap and easy it is to do I consider it mandatory for liquid metal.
Conformal coating is the most ideal. Nail polish works as an easy substitute. Electical tape should probably be ok, but whatever material you use it should be rated for 100celcius or so. That is the common mistake - for example using plastidip which will just melt under heavy heat exposure. The glue on the electrical tape might not stick so well after many thermal cycles depending on the brand/type, but... in this case it will probably manage to stay put anyway I'd bet.

Change the thermal pads to (10mm x 10mm at 1mm thick).
I changed to TIM to Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.
The pads Sony uses are so small. I changed mine a month after I got it and haven't had an issue with it. Top games that demand a lot like God Of War doesnt even ramp up the fan to extreme levels and when you put you hand next to the exhaust it's slightly warm air blowing through.
Guy's I give you an IT insider - simply apply epoxy glue. Rock-solid - stone hard 100 % non conductive and thermal resistance. I've dipped hole motherboards like this and did let them work underneath water.
There is only one place where ssd loading in games really mattered for me back when I got my first ssd.
Multiplayer Battlefield 3/4 so you could get the good vehicles before anyone else loads in.
unless something has a notorious long loading then I don't care about saving 10 seconds on a loading screen.
You're supposed to rough the die up first aren't you with a metal scrubber? The kit I got came with one and application was only seconds after scrubbing the die for like 5 seconds.
Liquid metal transfer the heat better than thermal paste, so the fan will be constant running..... however at low rate and consistent speed. Thermal paste might gives spikes in temperature if it runs for long time as temperature spreading is not as good as liquid metal. So for sudden temperature change it might have a bit more disadvantage.

I also have a day one edition ps4 pro. I did this same mod like 6 months back and have been happy with it ever since.(Liquid metal and 1tb ssd.) and its still whisper quite. my ps4 only runs PS4 exclusives, literally all weekend, non stop. only thing i did differently was, i used clear nail polish to insulate the capacitors on the APU for a bit of insurance. when working with liquid metal thin applications are happy applications. Just put one extremely thin application on the die and one on the heat sink and your good to go.

I used the graphite termal pad works great liqued metal is good to but not for the novice also if you keep the system on the side there is a small chance it can seaps out if it hits non Cooper it's going to destroy it in the long run. Tested it and it's not pretty.
Some PS4 Pros are louder than others. They made new models that are a bit quieter than the older ones. I'm assuming you have the older one and he doesn't.
It's not "bad thermal paste application, because there's nothing on chip/radiator". It's actually good, the thinner thermal interface layer is - the better. Paste only fills empty spaces in uneven surfaces.
Electric tape will stop adhering when heated, that way you can tell if your wiring is releasing unnecessary heat, use something else that isn't heat sensitive
The extra decibel after liquid metal is probably down to the fact that your playstation can transfer the heat faster so the fan has to work harder to move it out of the console, of course the dust left behind probably isn't helping that process either, but your console should be a bit cooler overall

And here my first gen PS3 60g (no longer just 60) is trucking along fine. But this does make me want to upgrade it more if just with new thermal compound (though water cooling would be cool as well).

I've commented this before, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE learn how to properly apply Liquid Metal. You squeeze a little drop onto the die, a little drop onto the heatsink, spread both around evenly with the black cotton swap, and mate them together. You DO NOT try to squeeze it directly onto the swab, it just wastes the LM onto the floor as you saw. I just don't want people seeing this and thinking it's an acceptable way to apply LM and then wondering why their cooling doesn't work as well as it should. If you need an example, I'm pretty sure Gamers Nexus has a delid video somewhere that should help a lot. Love your videos!
Should have coated those SMDs with Confomal Coating. It is a silicon coating that will protect it from shorting. Or nail polish.

why does no one ever put a thin line of thermal grease around the outside edge of the die and then apply the liquid metal to the center of the die? the grease would keep the liquid metal from escaping.
Yeah, they will always ramp up. I used premium paste on mine and it still sounds like a jet engine. Major modding is needed to the pro housing.
I'm not sure what's going on with your system. But I have the same model PS4 as shown here and used a Noctua NTH1 or whatever; and my system is pretty quiet. It's actually quieter than my PC that has a R5 2600 stockfan unoverclocked.
13:31 Maybe the SSD is accumulating more heat and therefore needs to be ventilated more. Also, it may be possible that the SSD is forcing the PS4 Pro to work harder now that it can load graphics faster. That is, previously, the console relied on buffering to ventilate and keep the system cooler. Now that it runs faster, it doesn't have the extra time to cool. It has to cool faster which requires the fans to run at higher speed.

Idk how your ps4's thermal interface worn out so quickly. My PS3 slim had no such problems since i got it & it didn't have as much dust, and i have a dusty room (tho i replaced the paste on it 1 yr ago just because i could)

And doing the Decibels test. You could have an Older PS4 Pro...they ran hotter and louder. BUT the new paste you applied WILL make it more efficient.

Fan and heatsink was not cleaned. Mainly heatsink are the problem. Clean and see day night difference. And APU was taped too much. Just tape the small area around APU. Too much tape creates barrier between heatsink and APU

You should have bough and put a conformal coating or a liquid electrical tape on those SMDs around the die, because regular tape has a shitty adhesive that will come loose with the temperature that the die is running and i still wouldn't trust it at all. You should have an air compressor for cleaning all the dust that accumulates in electronics.
Why not just use Arctic Silver? Temps seem like they are pretty close & alot less risky.

Would be nice if next gen console gave you the option to run 1080p 144hz. Microsoft and Sony are focusing way too much in resolution over framerates. Games would be way smoother and responsive if they could be run at 144hz and native 1080p
Agree. Would prefer 1080p/120hz over 4k/30hz for almost any game.

I was thinking of this upgrade for my PS3 as it has been getting a bit loud in some games when there is lots going on, but was going to use a 480GB SSD & Thermal Grizzly's Paste instead

After over five years of using ps4 . It became loud and laggy . After opening and seeing the processor. The thermal paste was dry as chalk . It was becoming dust at this point . After i saw the processor i decided to buy a thermal paste and i looked up the best one . And it was grizzly bear . I orderd it and put back my ps4 togther with what left with the old thermal paste but it was too hot to even start . After waiting for the new thermal paste i apllied it and turn on my ps4 . It was like i have just bought a new ps4 it was so quite i thought the fans were shot . But it was just running at the lowest speed . This was an amazing fix i revived my ps4 to being a brand new console . Also i bought a 1 terabyte external hard drive . And 5 fans with 2 speeds ( 2 is turbo mode ) that go on the back vents of the ps4 to suck the heat out of the ps4 . I am very happy at the moment for my ps4 life XD
If the boost control is automatically regulated then the noise could be explained by it clocking higher...

Liquid electrical tape around the die. It gets used in marine applications to water proof against salt water all the time, used it quite often in the USN. Your welcome.
I am pretty sure I applied it correctly. I spent 30 minutes evening it out on both the heatsink and apu. I thought it would be a little more quiet. Spider-Man is still somewhat loud but nowhere near annoying. I also upgraded to the more quiet fan.
The blue & white for the skin has me thinking Orlando Magic colors. My man!
But yeah, Sony is infamous for using terrible thermal compound.
Kapton tapes would be a much better alternative than those black electrical tape buddy. They are those see-through yellow tapes. Provides good electrical insulation and can withstand a good amount of heat. And its much thinner
D4RC N3T epoxy is better..
Nail polish is flammable. Its an unnecessary risk to use it around a processor.. kapton tapes and epoxy are industry standards for the task...

Use brush on electrical tape, nail polish etc. The tape might melt BAD LOL!
tape will not melt, but fall off like instant because of the glue
@@C4CH3S depends on what type of electrical tape he used some of that cheaper tape can't handle the temperature especially with it being right up against that piece of silicon. but if that silicone gets 60 degrees Celsius or better it very well could melt. But more than likely the glue will give up first like you said. Still a bad idea though lol.

Putting liquid metal on the chip is a pretty extreme measure, cleaning the fan/heatsink is a pretty mild measure... Those components on the package are mostly capacitors if I'm not mistaken, their lifespan can be affected by temperature, not sure adding an isolator on it is the best of ideas.
