    So interesting seeing these old, abandoned houses. You wonder who lived there. What their lives were like. Did they pass away and the house was left to rot? These abandoned videos are a reminder to me of how short our lives are for some reason.

      Passed away in I'm guessing the early 70s.
      Nothing in there (beyond what the squatters put there) is indicative of living there beyond the later 60s early 70s.
      Someone obviously owns the property but just waiting for an appropriate sale time.
      It's obvious that it's an area with no viable employment opportunities and too far from a town

    Very interesting. Probably a lot lighter inside when there wasn’t as many trees around and the windows not covered. Loved the woodwork despite it being so dark and the bed frame was once magnificent. Didn’t look like any indoor plumbing that I could see. Guessing there was an long decayed outhouse nearby. Sometimes seems unreal how things were so different just 100 years ago. Thanks for bringing us along!

    Hi Brent, I became more curious about the house as your video progressed. The interior shots of the horizontal wood boards, original bead board, wood work and newspaper batting in the walls gave me the impression it was built in the late 1800 or early 1900's. The back shed could have been the outhouse and a woodshed. The windows had no locks and at that age, probably operated with weights. Original electrical and plumbing weren't spotted by my eye; but electricity ran the radio even though no outlets were visible (to me) in other rooms or upstairs. The bed spring upstairs had a date, maybe 1884? My curiosity peaked when the building seemed unaffected by frost heaving. All the doors worked, but more revealing, the fitted woodwork was intact. In your video I tried to spy a foundation, but all I could see were cedar clapboards against the ground. I know you couldn't find a cellar. Even the roof line/ ridge pole was straight, so it must be sitting on a stone foundation (laid deep, with no interior cellar space?). There was a crate or box built under the staircase, it piqued my imagination. I particularly enjoy these types of homes. They reveal so much about our history. Because of the fancy woodwork, I wondered if the original building was the start of a planned, larger home which was not built. So often in that day houses were constructed so as to allow expansion as family (and hopefully money) grew. Great explore, Brent. Thanks! 👍🙏💖

      Yes for sure there was electrical wiring, tacked on top of the walls along with the round ball shape switches and long twisty drop ligh fixtures.
      Someone tore it all out.
      No plumbing either

      @@RetroCaptain Hi! Your eyes are better than mine, lol! I couldn't see any switches, outlets, plugs, evidence of lighting fixtures or even an outside power entrance/lines. I thought perhaps the radio was run off of a battery given the date. I thought I saw one at 5:46, but it turned out to be a picture in the old newspaper, ha ha! almost had me fooled. I wish Brent had shown the ceilings and also the end of the radio cord, to see if it had a plug on it. Anyway, these are great fun. I love trying to figure out the age, construction and details about a building. Thanks for dropping me a reply. If you see electrical in the building, let me know the time stamp please, so I can take a look as well. It sure puzzled me. I think I've looked at this video 6 or 7 times! See you later, Retro! Almost forgot, it's Christmas Eve, Merry Christmas!

    I think the newspapers were used behind the wallpaper so the shiplap lines wouldn't show thru so much and was cheaper than kraft paper or tar paper...I was amazed to see the original windows unsmashed! Awesome place 🤗

  • @NewArcadian
    @NewArcadian ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Top explore. I often enjoy these smaller, but characterful ones the most. Newspaper was quite often used at the time and provided a cheap & smooth base for application of the wallpaper - minimal insulation value unless many sheets.
    Perhaps the 1907/'08 paper was the construction date, with another room not being papered until funds or the need was there later on, hence 1919 paper. I wonder if 'The Canadian Farmer' has been digitised anywhere, perhaps not. The fellas of the Ontario Cattle Breeders' Association posing for their photo certainly might not have guessed that they'd live again across the world 113 years later due to a combo of being used as wallpaper backing and our 21st century fascination with the abandoned.

  • @erickrobertson7089
    @erickrobertson7089 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    At 6:25 or so... My guess would be that the shiplap was papered over with newspaper as a substitute for wallpaper and the actual wallpaper or kraft paper covered that at a later date. A poor man's compromise between style and economy.
    We had newspaper tucked into eaves for insulation on our home (late 1940's) and they bundled the entire edition up there, not individual pages. Most dated from the early 50's. It is interesting to leaf through as it reminds you how much has changed and how simpler times and people were. Dunno, JMO.
    Thanks for the upload.

    This is such a cool explore, Brent! This place reminds me of my grandparent's house. It was made in the 1870s---still standing---out of logs. Somewhere down the line they put up wallpaper on the inside and siding on the outside to make it look more modern. The siding is coming off, revealing the wood underneath. The wallpaper is coming off in sections in the upstairs portion of the house. It hasn't been lived in for around fifteen years, when my grandfather passed. Oh! By the way, the wallpaper on the wall was used as a form of insulation in older homes such as the one here.

    My grandfather insulated his old farm house with newspaper. And wouldnt hear different when you could buy the real stuff later in life.
    Holy Cow, the farm, as we called it, was cold to the bone. That didnt work. He was from the UP in Michigan. My dad said the old folks did it that way out their in the midwest. I miss him.
    My sister inherited the farm more than 20 years ago. She works real hard owning a cleaning business taking care of upper crust houses, in area's where plenty of people from where we live go, because we are the "help". The gardeners, cleaning folk, lawn maintenance, rubbish removal. I am always shocked at how sterilized and uniform the rich peoples houses are. With all new appliances, and non varrying cold paint schemes.
    Unfortunately my sister has remodeled the old farm to look like one of the wealthy people's homes she cleaned. All the old stuff is gone.
    She did real good. Put a ton of work into her home. I just wish she didnt hold those mainstream values of decoration as her own, I miss my grandparents identity and legacy. Oh well, the place is full of ghosts.
    They have let people know if they are allowed to be there or not..

    That balcony almost looks like it was built to be a deer stand.

    Cool find!
    I'd say that the house was probably built in the late 1890s or at the very turn of the Century...
    The idea of using the newspaper and old magazines to insulate was common practice... My grandparents home had literally tons of shredded newsprint in the walls and up above the ceiling.
    Gluing it to the walls before using actual wallpaper over top was standard practice, too. It looks like they went through about 12 or 14 years of gluing it up, then decided that they'd rather have "fancy" wallpaper, instead.
    The patterns on the wallpaper that's left up, looks like it was applied in the late 20s or early 30s.
    I do know that they used to buy the wallpaper for a nickel or a dime per roll... Pretty "uptown", huh?
    Another great explore!
    Cheers

    can we please take a moment and realize that the newspapers are over 115 years old?! thats insane! Idk if i should be more shocked at seeing newspaper from back in the early 1900s or the fact that the preservation of the newspapers are immaculate!

    newspaper was definitely for insulation but in the days old the old paste it yourself wallpaper, you were supposed to put a plain brown paper behind it. A lot of people just used the newspaper instead of buying the plain paper. I can't believe that bed got left behind, it's GORGEOUS!
