On this channel we go deep... REALLY DEEP into abandoned mines and tunnels all throughout the western United States. We researched some of the harder to find mines and hiked or 4x4 back into them to explore and reveal their hidden secrets. Many of these remote locations are filled with cool artifacts, antiques and unique geology that will have you guessing as to why the old prospectors worked so hard to find gold, silver, and other minerals.
A&FP moves just a bit slower as compared to other mine exploring channels. Gly discusses why the miners chose these sites and he points out the geology and minerals that got them excited. Veins of quartz filled with gold and silver made many men lose sleep in the 1800’s and early 1900’s and modern prospecting still does to this very day.
DANGERS? Oh yes, there’s allot of dangers associated with old mines. Un-exploded dynamite, blasting caps, bad air, bats, spiders, and snakes all find their home in abandoned mine shafts and tunnels. Oh, and let’s not forget rotting timbers, flooded passages and collapsing rock!
Gly takes abandoned mine exploring seriously with all the proper safety equipment, training, and experience necessary to do this activity as safe as possible but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun along the way. “Gly”, your host and his band of crazy characters “Old Bob” (Gly’s Jeep), “Quackers” (Gly’s duck) and “Bobbie” (Gly’s hula girl) are sure to brighten your day with their comments and silly antics. Heck, they may even give you a chuckle or two.

What beautiful Rugged Country! Such great views from the Bird's eye point of view, thank you for always giving us such a great view of the region where you explore. Well, most times anyways, some places you can't because it would give away the location. And, by the way, I totally support your refusal to give locations of mines, because we just can't have nice things. there are far too many people who never grew up being taught to have respect for our history and the sanctity of historical sites. Like a bunch of stupid juvies they go in and remove things for themselves and also damage and deface the places with graffiti of all kinds. So great job as always Gly for doing your best in both documenting and preserving these jewels of our history.
“Gly”: Thank you! Yes, it’s important to be a good steward of these sites. Had this one been full of artifacts I would’ve just began filming inside the mine. It’s happened on a few occasions where I did a few hours of drone work only to never use the footage because the mine was filled with artifacts.

I like the drone flights over the mine site. It helps me with the geography, the lay of the land and helps to generate in my mind a 3 dimensional view of the entire mine. Some mines are very complex but this works well for the smaller mines.
“Gly”: Thanks! I think so too. An overview is important for this kind of exploring. However, if it’s a mine full of hidden artifacts then I will not do drone work to help protect the location from theft and vandalism.

I just wanted to add that I used to work as a dump truck driver for a very large Landscaping company and we used to sell large boulders for wealthy landowners as well as developers and Boulders or Rock of any kind is extremely heavy, and Quartz is among the heavier of the minerals and that massive boulder that came down behind that partially gobbed wall at timestamp 24:51, from the size of it looks to be about 1/2 to 3/4 of a metric tonne (500kg to 750kg or 1,102 lbs. to 1,653lbs.) if that fell on top of your head, you likely wouldn't even feel the pain before it broke your neck and crushed your upper torso. I'm sure that we all have enough of an imagination to figure out what such a boulder would do to you if it hit various parts of your body. The point being, that it's not something you would be able to brush off or walk away from, to put it mildly. When you showed the other "widow makers" in that mine; I have a healthy respect for the weight of Rock no matter what it's composition because when it comes to the human body, the differences in weight between the minerals comprising rocks, is nothing more than semantics, for all of the difference it makes. LOL when you go through tight spaces that is where I get really nervous for you and sometimes, I don't know how you do it Gly! You got Titanium Cojones to go into some of the places you decide to go into! Thanks again for a top-notch video, and as always, I wait with bated breath for your next episode!
“Gly”: You are 100% correct and despite me wanting to do it, that’s why I did not climb up that ladder to explore the stope. The rocks in there were just too fractured and ready to fall. I’ll bet that stope looked 10 times worse.

22:13 Notice that the lower ladder is made one way and the upper ladder is made another way. The lower ladder is made in the traditional style with the rungs inset, but the upper ladder has the rungs scabbed on the surface as if it was done sometime later by others.
I always wondered how they managed to notch out all those runners for the rungs in those ladders back then.
@@robertherrmann4823 Saw cuts to the sides and a chisel to take out the middle. At least that is how we did it. We used 2 X 4's for the rungs so they took longer to wear out. Most use a 1X board as it is cheaper.
@@myfavoritemartian1 thanks, that’s what I figured, but those notches look very precise with the surface of the rungs being so flush with the sides. I guess practice makes perfect. What with all the mill power available, one would think maybe they could have made a notching die press to knock them out faster.
@@robertherrmann4823 I worked in a mine much like that one from 1959 thru 1968. They are so very hand to mouth that it is ridiculous. It was my Uncle, three hired guys and me (A kid). If you watch boat builders you will see just how precision a chisel can be. We had 4 shovels, 2 picks and 1 rock drill. It took 3 years before we got to build a bunk house and we always cooked over a campfire. If the Selective Service and the war had not come along, I might still be there. (JK)

Gly, I keep noticing an empty holster, you should always be carrying protection when you’re out there.
“Gly”: The pew pew is in my Jeep at all times, I just don’t carry it into the mine unless the area has a strange feeling about it. Some locations are prime mountain lion habitat and in situations like that you will definitely see me carry.

Gly, you should check out John Janzen's dives of the Delaware copper mine located in the Keweenaw peninsula in my home state of Michigan! He's got a couple of videos on TH-cam. You'll see tons of really cool artifacts still in the mine, like several intact ore cars, lots of rail, tool boxes, dynamite boxes, compressor piping, barrels, plus amazing architecture. There are stulls down there as big as trees!

Coming in late to view your episode. Had a birthday party to be at yesterday. Again, you found some cool, older mines, so old that much of them are collapsing. Too bad that you couldn't get back further in the 2nd mine to get a view of that upper adet connection. Where'd you wash off your boots on the way home? It was pretty gooey in that last mine. The erosion of those hills, in that area, are a great "feature" to see. Thank you for filming the area & scenery for we "armchair" viewers.
My beautiful backyard, the Bradshaw mountains. And we call the waste rock tailings in these parts.
“Gly”: Technically, tailings are what come off the tail of a sluice or a mill site. Waste rock is worthless rock that is discarded during the ore extraction process.

The larger heater was The Perfection Stove company, started in the 1880's peaked pre 1950 and appears parts ceased to be made by 1981, cheap electricity was their demise...

Just a thought. 🤔I don't know if you would be interested but, I could maybe build you one if you'd like. Nothings better than custom. 😉

Visit the soudan mine in northern minn. Go half mile underground. Operating 1924 hoist,drill shop, and crusher. All origimal!

“Gly”: It might very well be that TH-cam has mine exploring channels partially shadow banned but it’s all speculation and rumor. I’ve contacted TH-cam but I can’t get a straight answer out of those guys. All I get is… “keep producing content”. Well, this hamster 🐹 can only go round and round on the wheel without food and water for so long before he finally falls off.

I don't know all the specific "in's-and-out's of how TH-cam makes their money, but, I have to assume that the bigger your channel gets translates into more revenue for them also?
How is that a bad thing??
“Gly”: Last month, January, my channel made less than minimum wage. Minimum wage workers typically put in 40 hours a week, I average 80 hours a week. Sure, I consider it a labor of love but this is getting ridiculous. Larger TH-camrs make money with in video sponsorships but can you imagine me stopping in the middle of a mine explore and promoting a VPN or some kind of silly video game? Or maybe do a flashlight review on some cheap Chinese flashlight? Nope, not going to happen. Lol
Ya.....I don't blame you at all for stopping down and doing a promo.
I know a little about Patreon? Paying for a subscription to continue to join you on yoir explores would unfortunately be a bummer to some, however, it is a small price to pay for what we enjoy, would help your effort financially, and (I think?) give you the freedom you're looking for?
Sure, you're going to lose some subscribers, but, given what has been presented to you through TH-cam this may be the only way the channel can survive?
It's obvious you're trying to do anything and everything in your power NOT to have to go that route, but, the channel may have no choice?
Whatever you end up deciding to do it feels like the bulk of your followers will join you.
At the end of the day, TH-cam is making it impossible to simply afford to do what you?
I know this has to be tough for you to be put in this position.

13:00 bottom right of the screen is what appears to be a fairly large stacked rock foundation. Looks way too big for a simple miners cabin.

Gly I have enjoyed watching you for some time. Then I realize I have a Miners story.
I needed to drive a load into hunts point NY.for the first time. I ran into another driver with my company doing the same load and we became friends.
Before driving he said he was a working miner. He had a way of saying it funny. As he worked someone hit him in the head with something. The very next thing he remembers is he was in the hospital. He didn't go back. He didn't want to say what kind of injury it was.
Being a tough guy in a mine leads to injuries!
Who else has a story? He lived in West Virginia I should have said.
“Gly”: You can’t have eyes in the back of your head. Many miners were injured or killed because of their incompetent work fellows. It wasn’t just the dangers of the mine you had to worry about, it was the man next to you doing something reckless too.
@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces Back in the times this mine was being worked you would be lucky to have any treatment if you lived. The age of survival has to be lower than the other population due just close quarters inside.

I watched every single episode video everything on TH-cam that you had uploaded I still remember that one mine it was a newer one but it's the swiss cheese mine I believe ya called it while exploring with Mr Mike.
