The Witcher 3 Did Something Incredible

  • I played the Witcher 3 for the first time 2 years ago. I was at a friend’s house and they had just purchased it for their Xbox one and were playing it on their little 22 inch TV in the corner of their bedroom. As I watched my friend play through the Bloody Baron questline I found myself fascinated. This was both a game that had her frantically trying to manage the combat, crafting, and magic systems while also engaging both of us in its branching narrative. We had only been sitting there for 10 minutes, but I was already hooked and engaged in the story to the point where all I wanted was more. I had tasted the forbidden fruit and knew I had to experience this game for myself. So I purchased the Witcher 3 on Steam and began to play through it. And I quickly realized, the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had done something incredible.

      YES THIS!!!! Soundtrack must be the one thing noone gives a shit about cause games - visuals and gameplay, right...
      But truth is, the soundtrack is what really makes you feel a game, and the witcher 3 in my honest opinion, is from another world, i've downloaded a bunch of those osts just to have that feeling, and the fact that each track makes the sensation completely different
      You hear the swamp music, you FEEL crookback bog, you hear the city music, you feel novigrad, you hear the Kaer Trolde ost, you can FEEL the heat of Crach's fireplace in the middle of those mountains, and the snow falling, ans the way it was recorded, so much passion, each place with it's own sensation
      It is totally outstanding, glad to know someone agrees

      Imperialx Warlord I played Skyrim for years and loved it religiously. Every once in a while I would hear people taking about the Witcher 3, but I just decided that I probably wouldnt like it. I was so wrong!!! I recently finished my first play through and I’m already like halfway through my second. It was only until I played this game that I realized how much Skyrim did wrong. The Witcher universe feels so alive and real, the combat isn’t dry and repetitive, I genuinely care about ability points, alchemy, signs. This game is just so perfect, I’m in love with the characters, Geralt is such a cool protagonist. Never knew I would be so passionate about a game. John Lee To put it simply, it did everything other RPG's have been trying to do for years, and did them better than they have ever been done before. It has an absolutely massive, beautiful World that is absolutely filled with content. The attention to detail in every aspect of its design is unmatched in gaming, and the world feels organic and real. The story and characters are what really put it ahead of everything else though. Every Character, no matter how little of a role they actually play, seem like real people, with unique appearances, voices and mannerisms. The Story for each quest, including the many sidequests, are all exceptionally interesting and unique, this isn't a game where a farmer will offer you 10 gold pieces to herd his sheep for him, or to slay 5 lizards. Each quest is like a self contained episode for a show. I could really go on but suffice to say this game is the best RPG I have ever played, and it isn't even close.

    To me Skyrim's open world and The Witcher 3's open world feel very different. In Skyrim I feel driven to explore purely for the sense of discovery that each new spectacular vista and town brings. By contrast, the witcher 3's world is generally much more subdued and grim (though no less breathtaking, just not in the same way as Skyrim), and so the driving force for exploration is to discover new interesting quests. The witcher 3's quest writing is absolutely unmatched. I have never encountered a game where even insignificant characters feel so alive and believable. I was even floored by how many random merchants with no side quests whatsoever are given absolutely unique personalities, especially in Blood and Wine.

    • @lightsidemaster
      @lightsidemaster 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good points. If I would try to sum it up the main quest story in TW3 is quite a lot better and has you greater invested in it than the story in Skyrim, but the world seems just a tad deeper and richer in Skyrim.
      When I was exploring EVERYTHING in Velen, I was done extremely fast even though I even checked under water for secret caves or treasures.
      It did feel a bit shallow and empty.
      So there are still points these two games could take from each other to get EVEN better.
      Both games are ok, but really not magnificent when it comes to gameplay.
      Gameplay in the realms of "Nioh" would be a lot better.
      Nioh and not Dark Souls because the gameplay in the Souls games is rather slow.

    • @CampingforCool41
      @CampingforCool41 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I wouldn't say that the Witcher 3's world felt shallow and empty (by contrast I find it to be very alive), but that it is much more grounded and realistic than Skyrim's world. For some this is a drawback, but if you are trying to create a grounded fantasy world, placing dungeons and caves every five feet is probably something you shouldn't do. So in that sense, Witcher 3's world is exactly what it needs to be. The world is a medium to support the narrative. I would have liked to have seen them leave at least SOME large secrets unmarked by the question marks on the map though rather than telling you where virtually every hidden treasure is. It would make finding treasures feel more exciting and organic rather than a chore.

    • @135792183
      @135792183 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      lightsidemaster if you think witcher 3 feels shallow and empty then you didnt pay attention to the details, which are very consistant and well done, you walk through a village and villagers dont speak the same lines they arent all doing the same exact things, everyone and everyplace in the environment has a purpose, whereas skyrims ai purpose are to make you feel less lonely (they're ingame schedules dont make sense or seem like they're people they're just robots doing the same things over and over)

      yeah, questionmarks on map are the single big mistake in W3... game would be a lot better without them I even play with them turned off, but after 5-6 playthroughts, you know where everything is already... If they were turned off by default, i bet a lot of players would find new ones even today...

    • @lilrizq
      @lilrizq 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My only gripe with The Witcher 3 is that most of the NPCs are just there for decoration and don't have much to say when you talk to them except "Nordling". You can only overhear conversations like in ME games and you can only talk to people who have a quest for you. But where TW3 makes up for that flaw at is in how they make those quest(even the non- story quest) feel important, so I can forgive that flaw.
      I feel like TW3's open world design has more in common with GTA games then Skyrim in that aspect. In bethesda games like Fallout and Elder Scrolls not only can you overhear conversations but you can damn near talk to everybody you see unless they are merchants trying to sell you something or bandits/raiders trying to kill you, lol. So I agree with @lightsidemaster on the whole Skyrim and TW3 taking points from each other to become better RPGs.
      If yall like JRPGs, deep story telling and world building games, yall should also try playing some of the Legends Of Heroes series as well. Love those games :)

    Just be warned, this game will ruin you! After I finished it, all I could think about was playing it again bc no other game really comes close in my opinion. I even bought a ps4 pro to play the exclusives I never had before like Uncharted 4, Until Dawn, and Horizon: Zero Dawn. (All were great games in there own way, and Horizon may actually have the best graphics I've ever seen in 4k, with awesome combat & storyline,) but it still felt like something was missing. There's a void left in me that no game has filled yet since The Witcher 3 (except for its amazing DLC's which almost felt like there own games, especially Blood & Wine.) So now luckily, enough time has passed that I'm able to enjoy different types of games again, but there's still a Witcher shaped hole in my gamer heart. (And the only cure is more cowbell... Jk) But I do hope CDPR either nails it with cyberpunk, or surprises the world with a new Witcher game soon. So heed my warning & play at your own risk!

If that turns out to be cyberpunk, that will be some seriously impressive forethought! CDPR for President!

      Watch the BTS videos. Especially industry ones from GDC. Their cinematics engine is absolutely GENIUS. It did what Mass Effect Andromeda's engine was supposed to do, but 10,000x better. It actually used AI rules to interpret the audio recordings and reference a structured library of character motions and film production rules to automate a significant portion of the game's cinematics. Artists then went in and tweaked a few parts and created hand-crafted animations for key areas.

    I avoided the witcher 3 for a long time because im very picky when it comes to the games i like to play. I typically like to play open world rpgs that allow you to create and customize my own character. I just find myself getting immersed in a world more when the character i play is one of my own creation. So anyway i kept hearing from friends and people on youtube about how awesome the witcher 3 was. Even my own brother told me that he liked it almost as much as skyrim. So i bought it and downloaded the goty edition or whatever its called with all the dlc and started playing. Immediately i was sucked into the world and just found myself getting lost in it for hours at a time. And ya you dont get to create your own character but theres so many different armor types and weapons to choose from and i really enjoyed questing for new items and doing treasure hunts which made the immersion even better. I always play all my games on the hardest difficulty possible because i like a challenge and it makes the games more interesting when you actually have to try n figure out how to beat ypur opponents. I died so many times in the beginning i loved how challenging each fight was and how there were different ways to take down each different type of monster its just amazing. But for me even better than the things i listed already was the story line and side quests. Omg every sidequest just felt so purposeful and meaningful i never felt like i was doing a fetch quest or wasting my time and thats why i just couldnt get enough of it. To this day i think ive sunk more than 1000 hours into the witcher 3 and am on my 3rd playthrough. If you havent tried it i highly suggest you do yourself a favor and play it. Amazing game, amazing story and keeps you interested from beginning to end.

      Haha! I had the same reason for not playing the Witcher games... but then curiosity got the best of me (and Witcher 2 got a deal and costed me only 3 bucks when Witcher 3 launched... so I started with that one) and I was amazed... Geralt was a great character. Even though you can't ''make'' your own hero you can still shape him and it allowed the games to have far, *far* deeper storytelling than any other large RPG I've ever played. And *definitely* more than any open-world game I've ever played.

    Even in 2019, playing through The Witcher 3 is an absolute pleasure. In other games I find myself skipping dialogue, in this one I am constantly finding new details to appreciate in everything from the different textures to the detail of each characters face. The world feels like it's alive and breathing, I literally can't help but play for five hours or more whenever I open this game. No other game makes time fly by like this one. I sit down promising myself I would only play one quest and five hours flies by. I have heard that CDProjekt Red is working on a new open world RPG for release in 2021. I hope that is true. The only other games that came close to the escape that The Witcher offers was the Mass Effect series but for now all I can do is replay Witcher 3..

    Hey Luke, really enjoyed the video and can agree whole heartedly.
    The Witcher 3 for me is something i wish i could re-experience again for the first time (even re-obtaining the Platinum i have for it) as there is no other experience (personally) for me that can rival it, maybe other than The Last of Us or Dark Souls 1 (Different genres i know).
    CDPR created a masterpiece, yes it's not "Perfect" but as close to it as can be. The fact that Hearts of Stone was 15 hours for me, and Blood and Wine was 30, on top of the 60 i put into the main story with side quests, is amazing, and no sadly no games moving forward, will warrant such a full experience in terms of scope, depth, enjoyment and simply - having fun again while playing video games.
    I bought the collector's despite the price, knowing i was in for something special and i am so glad i did. Moving forward CDPR hands down has earned my trust, and anything they make from here on out, will warrant an immediate purchase no matter what. They're so transparent with their responses to questions and adamant about making "Quality over Quantity" games that puts faith in Cyberpunk 2077 being another grand experience to rival that of The Witcher 3. Also this was there first attempt at an open world game (TW3 - from what i've heard) and they did a great job.

    I agree with you and you did a good job on explaining what the Witcher III did achieve.
    Besides being one og the best if not the best game I have ever played - I must say, after completing the whole game, exploring every questionmark and done every quest - I now see one of the biggest strenghts also as its weakness - since all the great storytelling has been used and is now gone, the world feels so empty, i can still wander around and gaze at the landscape of skellige islands or the castle in blood and wine - but some of it's original charme is gone :-(
    I wish there were random quests and way more options to still interact with the characters and environments - even after completing everything there is to do.

    • @MrRadialdrift
      @MrRadialdrift 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Sprakh - An opinion would be, "W3 is the best game I have ever played". That is a true and un-debatable fact, as maybe Ross has only played 2 games in his entire life. But, when someone claims W3 is the best game ever made, that means two things, first it is the best RPG ever made in the last 35 years, (which it isn't based on objective facts), and 2, one would have to have played every game that has ever been made and compare W3 to every other game, which I guarantee Ross hasn't done. Therefore his statement is false, one of ignorance and based purely on emotion.
      Here's 16 that are better - The other RPG's I have played that are better than W3 - Baldurs Gate 1, Baldurs Gate 2, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Tyranny, Mount & Blade: Warband, Pillars of Eternity, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, Diablo 2, Fallout New Vegas, System Shock 2, Mass Effect 2, Quest for Glory 4, PYRE, Nier Automata, Wasteland 2.

W3 is better than all the games you have listed and no I haven’t played them all but I have played 10 out of the 16 your the one who is emotionally attached to these games. The only game in this list that even comes close is Divinity 2. And yes of course it’s my objective opinion but don’t take shit so serious. @Freeformrulz - I am, How so? I played it, finished it, hence why I can make a very accurate assessment of the games structure, lack of innovation for the genre and very mediocre game mechanics. (I love how fan boys always state, "You probably never played the game") Would you like me to break down critically why W3 is not the greatest game ever made and why it is one of the worst made RPG's of all time?

    • @khanhnamang4670
      @khanhnamang4670 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      yeah sure, let's hear your thoughts cause millions of fans and countless of rewards would like to counter your argument

    • @MrRadialdrift
      @MrRadialdrift 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nam Đặng K. - Sure bro - Firstly what people should say that like The Witcher 3, is that it's their favorite game, of all time, they have ever played. Because that can't not be disputed by any argument or facts or critical objective assessment. If W3 is your favorite game of all time then there is noting to discuss, but when people claim its a masterpiece of game design or the best game ever made, then that is when an objective set of critical assessments can be made, taking into account other games of the same genre and other games of differing genres.
      RPG elements - The game allows you to play as a monster hunter detective, whom favors the use of swords. This is the first issues with W3, it doesn't give the player a choice of how to overcome situations, use your sword and progress in a linear fashion. Look at Desu Ex, as an example, not a great example but at least Deus Ex allows players to choose the method in which they want to role play Adam. You can stealth, assault or hack, and although each of these ends up at the same end point or outcome, it does at least give options to experience the game from a different avenue. W3 does not give the player this choice, its a linear single path journey. Therefore it lacks some very basic elements that make an RPG good. You aren't given the choice to role play as good or evil, its flat-line neutral. So calling W3 an RPG, is in fact incorrect, as much as Fifa is an RPG or Call of Duty, W3 lacks key elements to allow players to role play
      Sword play/Combat -The majority of the game revolves around combat and using swords to achieve positive outcomes. The sword play in W3 is awful, easy, repetitive, lacks skill and strategy. It is the key mechanic in the game that truly lacks innovation, yet it is where you spend the majority of the play time in game. You are meant to be a master swords man, but you don't progress in your craft, nor does the approach change from your first fight to the last. Again W3 fails at providing the player with an immersive RPG experience, and instead opted for an easy casual dumbed down approach.
      Lack of consequences - Outside of quests, W3 has the weakest world in terms of your actions not influencing the NPC's view of you. There is nothing you can do to alter your reputation, links or progression within the game world. I can be chatting away to an NPC in their home, whilst looting their entire life savings, and they don't react to my actions. Try doing that in Baldur's Gate or even Fallout 3. This creates a complete separation between the world and Geralt's actions, and breaks immersion. It makes you feel like you have just be placed into the world for one purpose, to play the quests and the rest is here for fluff.
      The Quests - There are only two choices ever given with quests and they are always the same two choices. This ties in well with the linear style of game, but makes the entire structure of the experience mundane and repetitive. The player never gets to figure anything out, your are always told with a very handy marker on the map exactly where to go. A good RPG gives you a vague inference and you have to work it out. The silly thing about W3 is that they actually do this with the rare Gear Set loot hunt. You get very vague notes, or partial maps about locations of the Gear sets, no markers, no hand holding, and this is the best part of the game. It lets the player explore and discover parts of the world they would otherwise not interact with. This should have been how the entire game was formulated and due to this extreme hand holding, is one of W3's greatest short comings.
      Difficulty - The only thing that happens with increased difficulty is enemies have more HP, and you have essentially less, their strategy doesn't alter. Good RPG's throw in new attacks, require changing your methods, all W3 does is make each battle longer.
      I can see why people like and even love W3, there is no issue there, but stating it is the best game ever made and claims of it being a masterpiece of design is complete ignorance. W3 is not innovative as a game nor as an RPG, it is a pseudo RPG. Its a very casual pretty looking game that doesn't push any boundaries, it's not even an open world game, showing that the in house game engine that Projekt Red made is not even push the envelope, and the physics are pretty bad in game. It is by no means a poor game, far from it, but it terms of being a game that should be heralded as being the best ever, it lacks in every department.
      But please give me some objective reasons as to why it is a masterpiece.

    There will never be another game like this. Games like RDR2 are incredible, but something about the Witcher 2 and 3 just feel so unique, and the atmosphere of the witcher 3 and that perfect music and ambient sound... I don't think I will ever see another game that makes me feel that sense of being transported into a world rather than playing a really fun game. Don't get me wrong, RDR2 made me pause and admire how beautiful its world was quite a lot. But only the witcher 3 felt like I was looking into another world that existed somewhere and made me long to enter it myself. Which is strange given how horrible the events of the game are and how many dead bodies and monsters are lying around everywhere.

    I have a confession to make; I absolutely hated the game when I first got it. It just wasn't what I was expected. But about halfway through the baron questline, something clicked and honestly, it's one of the greatest games I've ever played

      Simmilar situation there.
      At start I was like "why is this game so hyped ?"
      Few days later I was like "Why is this game so underrated ?"
      Especially when I was at some 50% of game unfortunately at first playthrough I was total noob and didnt know that I can at least get a witcher gear so I kinda broke my first playthrough but still it was cool and at the end I had nothing to do with my life.
      So I started again
      And again
      And again
      And again, Im repeatig this game Im before going on skellige. After I watch something with w3 I want to go back to this game. Its GOTY not without a reason and also its for me best game ever made.

    Witcher 3 is responsible for some of my most memorable gaming experiences. One in particular being the quest where I had to slay the giant on one of the Skellige islands. I sailed there and drifted up to a dock as the sun was setting. There was a small village that was totally abandoned and run down. Wood was creaking in the wind, dead trees everywhere, I could hear an occasional scream or howl in the distance and there was some very eerie and spacey music gently playing in the background. It was like an ancient version of the scene from Apocalypse Now when they reached the Do Long bridge. Such a dark atmosphere, yet you still felt like a badass as climbed out of the boat because well, you're the Witcher and that means death to whoever or whatever you're hunting down.

    I think the whole "save the world" trope... I dunno. Its tiring. Yes, the sorta of direction you go in TW3 is saving the world from the White Frost, or at least helping Ciri do it... But it is masked by the very relatable mission of protecting one's family.
    Sounds like Fallout 4 a bit. But Fallout 4 forced this family upon you and I found myself laughing when my character got all angry and yelled "WHERE'S SHAUN!" like I'm supposed to care. Is it "Shawn"? I dunno, whatever. TW3 made you care about Ciri by using the opening, and letting you play as her as you recount her tale. It let you get to know her, where Shaun had the curse of being a baby that had no dialogue (aside from crying), no personality, barely moved and was reduced to a plot tractor that pulled you through the game. Honestly, choosing a baby was a horrible idea. Shawn should've been like 5-8 years old and you should've bonded with him before the bombs dropped in the beginning. Perhaps a game of catch or teaching him how to ride a bike or something...

      I would have loved the option to be the abusive dad too. I know that sounds wrong, but it's a reality of life for someone who was a soldier. TBH, that is how I managed enjoy F4. After my character Artair came back from the War, he felt he had no purpose in the real word, Nora wanted to have a family and wanted to settle down, but Artair felt like all the purpose of his life was gone because he had no goal or mission and couldn't integrate back into society. He began to drink instead and partake in drug usage. Best time I had in F4 was ignoring the main storyline, with a drinking, drug abusing, run and gun playstyle. Who saw his predicament and thought he was free. I joined a bandit group in Nuka Cola world and completely ignored the underwhelming main questline, to much better pretend my character never cared about his family and prefers being a mercenary psychopath. lmao

      Synystr7 I agree. It would’ve been cool if they made it that depending on what dialogue you chose when you speak to Shawn in the past then it would reflect how he’d respect you in the future

    I didn't feel any of that, except the landscape was made really well. The Blood wine DLC was gorgeous. But the limited combat was usually not fun and most of the NPCs were boring and I didn't care about helping them in their side quests. The main Witcher 3's open world bored me with a lot of empty space. Yes, sometimes it was beautiful to look at, but nothing FUN to do. Witcher 2 was better than Witcher 3 because they kept it focused. Cyberpunk 2077 is by default not going to be like the Witcher, and the developers are talented and it may become one of my favorite games of all time.

    Just finished Blood and Wine for the first time, and it was so good that i fuckin shed a few tears. That's not an overstatement, that literally happened as Anna and Syanna hugged it out. Man, what a story - the twists, the turns, the depths of character... It's actually a crime for The Witcher to be this good because now i doubt i'll find something that I can enjoy and look forward to.

    I'll never understand the love for this. Red Dead Redemption already existed for 5 years when this came out so why does Henry Cavill's face look like ass?? Why does The Witcher look no better than the quality of a mobile or handheld game? And who the f cares about these mystical characters? What relevance do they have to my life? What possible value could I get from this Game of Thrones nonsense?
    I think the main thing that happened in the new millennium is that people got satisfied with crap. The Witcher itself is quite credible. The only incredible thing is that people like it so much.
