'Red Dead Redemption 2' Did Something Incredible | Luke Stephens

  • Rockstar is phenomenal, specifically within the Red Dead series, at making players feel empathetically attached to the player character. Now I don’t mean empathetically attached like you feel when playing The Last of Us. Rather, Rockstar focuses on what I will call 'Gameplay Empathy.' Now before you comment, yes, I completely made up that term, and I’m sure that others have discussed a similar concept, but what I mean by it is that they try to make the player feel the same way as the character they’re controlling by way of the gameplay’s design. They do this by making sure that both the player and the character are experiencing the same emotions, feelings, and sensations while performing a given activity. The clearest example is exploration, a cornerstone of these games.
    Simply put, Rockstar proved to other developers and to us, the gamers, that it’s ok to have some empty space in your game; that it’s ok to leave the player alone with their thoughts; and that it’s ok to leave the player to their own devices in making their experience what they want it to be. It’s a style of open world design that forces the player into a state of Gameplay Empathy for the protagonist and that also embraces freedom across the board. It’s a revolution, and one that we will be seeing the effects of over the course of the coming years. To me, it is clear, Red Dead Redemption 2 really did do something incredible.

      Good video, but i don't agree. Your missing some of the core parts of the game. Part of RDR2 is the you engaging into the environment. Just on the few shots you have shown, i saw multiple opportunities to gather new items, animals to hunt, and if i survey my surroundings i would find multiple events happening from a distance. It might be a train passing, or a stagecoach to rob. I think it kept to the rule, It just depends if your a player that runs through story and jumps online, or a player that tries to take every opportunity to hunt, gather, rob, ride a horse full speed weaving and taking dangerous chances through tight spaces. I like to play very random and not follow exact paths to long, you should give it a try, it will make any game more exciting. I know many people that thought it was very boring outside of the story line, smh.

      Story DLC is almost certainly on the way. Part of why GTA V's single player DLC was cancelled was because the games multiplayer blew up and simply was a better money making opportunity. Red Dead 2 is different however. Rockstar are more than aware that the reason Red Dead Redemption 2 was the best selling game of 2018 was not because people bought it for the multiplayer. They 100% know that Red Dead 2 blew up because of its amazing single-player. Thus, going merely on the past, it is almost certain that Rockstar will seek to capitalise on the popularity of the single-player by giving us multiple single-player story DLC's. Rockstar are a smart company. They know what they are doing. From what I can see, its not a matter of will they make single-player DLC, but when. Also, they do not appear to be pushing Red Dead 2 Online that hard (especially compared to how they did with GTA V), which is another good sign for their realisation that Single-Player DLC is what people want.

      It's everything that I wished the first RD was. My favorite gameplay loop was just traveling to something on the other side of the map and taking my time to get there. Stopping to set up camp when it got dark, eating a meal then sleeping till morning, and packing up to ride of again. I loved stopping to hunt for a few carcasses on my way back to the gang hideout so I could carry a deer over to Pearson. Every little detail that allowed you to just "live" in that world drew me in so much.

    The first thing I wanted in this game was fast travel at first. I almost thought it would be boring to horse ride everywhere right? Wrong. The first time I fast travelled I know I made a mistake. I was missing opportuinities to communicate with NPC's and discovering strangers and so much more... and then I never fast travelled even if I wanted to go to the other end of the map. Rockstar nailed that bit so much that I might follow this in every game maybe. This made the game so much heavy. So connected to the character that sometimes I right out felt for that fictional character in a video game. Not just pain, but his jokes, his regret, his anger and his love. This might get lost in a big comment section but I will wholeheartedly say that rockstar just made a game that is just worth it. Thank your Rockstar. Thank you Arthur.

      Same. You care about Arthur. You actually care. And not just while you're playing. You leave this game, and it effects you as a person in the same way stuff like Kurosawa's Yojimbo, or Gone with the Wind did. RDR2 isn't unique in being art, but it is art., and its narrative makes you actually care.
      It's odd, actually. GTA is a satire of American commercialism and the violence and sex in pop culture. RDR1 is satire of the glorification of the west. Somewhere along the line of creating RDR2, I feel like Rockstar grew up a bit, and suddenly forgot they were making a satire. This game isn't satire in the slightest. It is instead a loving tribute to a period of cinema and history.

    I get the point you're making about the horses but I feel obliged to mention that the horse will indeed avoid trees and rocks in its path if you stop trying to navigate the trees with the control stick and just tap the A/X button. It's not a completely fool proof solution but 8 out of ten times, if you just tap the sprint button thru a copse of trees, your horse will weave past any trees directly in its path. The horses in RDR are smarter than people give them credit for because everybody tries to navigate themselves and everybody ends up faceplanting a tree. Have faith. That's all I wanted to say.

    Try it with a forest full of trees, your horse will avoid every one of them if you LET GO of the directional stick and just press gallop.
    Just aim your horse in a general direction you want to go and just press gallop. You'll NEVER hit a tree again.

      Which makes sense since a real horse wouldn't run straight into a tree unless you forced him to. While playing RDR2 it really felt like my horse had a mind of his own, which really added to the experience and immersion. Having to clean, feed, calm, pet my horse was nothing like a chore to me, I did it with pleasure, and the scene when Arthur says goodbye to the horse while he passes away was so powerful because of that reason, it really felt like losing a character with whom I had built a relationship with for the entirety of the game since I had kept the exact same horse for the entire time. RDR2 has the best horse gameplay out of any game I've ever played,dethroning RDR1, and not just because the riding feels amazing and cool and realistic, but for the reason that it becomes an actual part of the story. God I love this game.

    After finishing red dead redemption 2, I feel like I just finished an amazing lego set. Let me explain. Playing through the games story is like building the lego set. We see our protagonists, john and Arthur slowly build up, like how the set does. But once we finish the story, we are left with a fully developed john marston, like the fully finished set. We now have this big lego set to play around in, representing the open world of rdr2. But, as we all know, building the set is the set is the most fun part, but you dont see that when you're actually doing it. This is because you're too busy trying to rush the story in order to unlock st Austin. For lego, this is where you put your lego set on the shelf, never to be used again. sure, you'll still play it from time to time, but it wont have the same charm it once had. Furthermore, this outstanding set is so good, you cant imagine a better set/game. This is the problem with rdr2. It makes in the highest tier games look weird.

      The 1992 Dream Team ehhh I duno... that game was amazing. Don’t get me wrong: RDR was my personal favorite but I was blown away by God Of War as well and I must say I think the story was executed slightly better than RDR2. I’ll probably get crucified for saying this but Red Dead’s story was actually it’s weakest part imo. Still a great story especially compared with most AAA games these days but it felt pretty predictable and stagnant at times.

      Taylor James I guess although it’s not like we knew much of anything about the events that occurred before RDR1. The writing just felt kind of lazy/sloppy. “We need more money, we need to move camp!” Got pretty stale after five chapters. There were some exceptions (Rains Fall storyline was great, they should have expanded that more). I just felt the story was it’s weakest part whereas that was one of GOW’s biggest strengths. This is of course just my opinion.

    • @Armataan
      @Armataan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Uh. Predictible?
      I knew what was going to happen in God of War within 15 minutes of the game starting. If you pay any attention at all during the funerary rite, and the fight with Baldur, you know Atraeus is Loki, and that he will kill Baldur. Within 30 minutes of the game beginning, you know that he is a child of a god and a giant and that he is going to kill his father and literally upon meeting Freya, you know who she is. No aspect of God of War's story was remotely surprising to anybody with an even passing familiarity with norse fable. And you complain that RDR 2 is predictable?

I guess that's what happens when you play without auto aim tho. I almost guarantee everyone who played and didn't notice the awful gameplay had auto aim on but that only adds to the fact the game is also frustratingly easy!😡😂 I really don't understand all the praise. It was a good game imo but people saying it was the best and most innovative thus far?😂😂😂

    • @whennever8202
      @whennever8202 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OTG1776 And turning off auto-aim will only break the gameplay, it`s not designed as a real shooter usually is, but somehow still so stiff clunky that you won`t notice the difference other than when fighting on horseback.
      And with auto-aim on... I mean, it must be fun for autists. Aim in the direction of your opponent, nudge the stick up slightly, headshot. Rinse and repeat - aka: shooter mechanics. And then you get the quest design that not just holds your hand, but puts you in an armbar and leads you around and a narrative that glorifies its cliché and stereotypicality by unfolding extremely slow even for a western.
      Anything will sell well if a R* logo is slapped on it mostly, especially if its a console exclusive. It`s rather popular than recognized. The all in all 4 game awards and no GOTY pretty much speaks for itself, it`s the fans (because of the R* logo and some big numbers like "8 years!") and casual sites giving the praise, while many are paid off or just bend to peer pressure from the fans.

    Honestly the praise and critics of this game are practically the same. In a way i'm actually very glad Rockstar went in this direction. Too often in the gaming industry a game will set a trend and every game after follows the trend. Then when a game comes out that's on the same production scale as every other triple A title people are mad that the didn't do what every other game did. You wouldn't believe how many people complain and then drop the "look at what ____ did you shouldn't make a game like this" Your enjoyment on a game should be based on the experience that game put you through. Not whether or not its like The Witcher 3 or whatever your favorite game is.

    So the thing with the example of the last of us for me is, I didn't care really about the dad or the kid AT THE BEGINNING. So I'm forced to care because she is a kid, and feel bad for the dad? It was sad and hard to watch, but.. Feels like emotional manipulation. Yes I came to invest as the game went on and it did serve as a back story piece. Was a good game, no doubt, not my game to play really, but good and I get why people love it so much. But rdr2.. When your *spoiler* gets *spoiler* with you after all that time you play through the game with it, if you so choose.. I fucking lost it and had to play the end through tears. And then to see it end being dishonorable. I raged and turned off my Xbox. So I can get the whole thing of just leaving the game in your hands. Yes there is a story line that is pretty devoid of choices. And knowing, from playing 1, that this was gonna end badly it still got to me. I honestly didn't think I'd like Arthur as much as I do now.

    I'm sorry, but this series is getting wrung out. It's the same incredibly clickbaity thumbnail over and over, and oftentimes it feels like individual ideas tied to certain games or theses that could flourish into interesting video essays are bogged down by the fact that these videos are all a series.
    I don't mean to say that they are all *terrible*. These videos often do bring up very striking ideas, and draw appreciation to portions of games that have revolutionized, or improved upon, certain mechanics within games. I appreciate that, and as a disclaimer, I am a fucking JUNKIE for Red Dead 1 and 2.
    At the same time, the fact that those types of videos are all restrained by their dedication to a core theme of "Just...Wow" can make them simultaneously samey and disjointed. I say samey about them all, meaning that most of these videos end up being the same length and sound structurally similar. I say disjointed because these videos frequently go off the rails a bit much or are structurally all over the place, a la this video. This video seemed like it was 30% about Red Dead, and 70% about other titles and the way THEY worked on open world exploration. Hell, Odyssey had more screen time than Red Dead did in this video.
    Long story short, I don't mean to trash these videos or Luke's channel. He makes good content. I just wanted to offer some respective criticism. I'd love to have my comment criticized and discuss with you guys what you think about this series.

      Infant Motorist Yeah I agree a lot of his recent videos have felt the same and a little lazy. It almost reminds me of Downward Thrust or Cleanprincegaming. His videos are still decent but it seems like they aren’t as concentrated as his older videos

    • @miss.brun0
      @miss.brun0 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      N7pirate: Cleanpricegaming and Downward Thrust are perfect examples. Their content is lazy and shoehorned, and I really don’t want to see Luke’s content turn into that. I don’t want him swept away by trying to appeal to what’s popular, or uploading a video just for the sake of uploading.

    • @TheParadox3000
      @TheParadox3000 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the video was pretty coherent and every part of it worked towards making a point. But I do have a problem with the thumbnails and titles. If I didn't know the content was good, I would have never watched this video, because it sounds cheap ("just...wow" really triggers me, similar to "I can't even"). I think Luke should overthink his approach to titles and thumbnails (the picture and font is great, actually, so here I'm only talking about the title, too) if he wants to attract more people who can appreciate his content.

    • @miss.brun0
      @miss.brun0 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aeturnus I agree. I understand how he used other points from other games to tie into the idea that Red Dead 2’s open world is more deliberate than others, but in doing so I feel like it spends more time exploring why those games took a misstep rather than really expanding on how Red Dead 2 took the RIGHT step. That’s why I felt like putting this video in this series detracted from what could have been a more fleshed-out video exploring open world design in the context of Red Dead 2. The video isn’t necessarily all over the place, but I feel like with how much time he spent on other games, the title didn’t land as impact-fully as it could have.

    • @Jonifico
      @Jonifico 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great comment. Totally agreed with the thumbnails and titles. It's also a shame that he's so focused on the '___ did something incredible' format since 1. It's not inherently beneficial to the video, 2. It forces Luke to frame the video in a certain way and 3. He can do so much better with how smart he is. I think that going to a more video-by-video basis with a wider disregard for catchy formats - a la Skill Up - would be much cooler.

    • @Armataan
      @Armataan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it is relatively apt. distance between points of interest isn't measured in distance, but in time. Likewise, the measurement of weapon damage in height makes no sense. You measure it in time.
      In this regard, it effects gameplay loop in the same way. TTK and TTPOI are both trackable balancing points that you work into the fundamental design of your game. Gunplay and movement play are inextricably linked. The distance between two towns is as important to that as how many points of cover there are between two sniper nests.

    i remember one of the things i loved about FFXV was the silence in the car at times. just riding with your buddies, listening to music, taking in the scenery. it felt genuine. so much bonding happened with the characters with so little exposition (especially for a FF game) and it created a wonderful gameplay experience. the traveling was part of the fun, near the end maybe it got a little repetitive, but never enough to make me fast travel. it wasn't a burden like having to clear out a factory you had been 4 times before for some NPC in Fallout 4, instead it was central to the game. it's the same for RDR2, when you are talking with another character the dialogue feels authentic, it feels like real people are talking and not just characters in a story. and when you're not talking the silence of just riding with them, or when you're by yourself and the sounds of the world around you are only punctuated by praising your horse or an occasional "howdy mister!" to a passerby, pulled me deeper into the world. i love riding across the world, it's a pleasure rather than a chore to just get from point a to point b. the story is such an important part of a game, but so much of what we fall in love with and remember, at least for me, are the worlds, and the characters, the emotions that they evoke stand out to me just as much as any plot twist or amazing set piece moment. letting the world breathe and just be, and allowing the player to live and explore in that makes for a better gameplay experience, and you're right, RDR2 nailed it.

    This was really well done. Also, the thing in the ledger you can buy that allows fast travel is the only thing I didn't buy in the ledger because going from place to place on my horse was much more immersive and made me feel a part of the game. *DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THIS GAME*. It's not just a game, it was made completely different than other games and let me tell you it never seizes to amaze. One thing I also realised is that the game used a lot of techniques used in film such as depth of field, and making the camera move more dramatically when in combat to add suspense. And also, the motion capture and voice acting is incredible. Another thing I love is how they made the characters. They aren't just characters, they each have their own traits and All have their own way of speaking which adds to the realistic factor once again.

    Gives the devices to play the way you want... no it doesn’t. It’s the most limiting experience ever. Everything has to be meticulous to follow its specific narrative. Put the horse specifically here. There’s no dynamics to the story design. Interactions function for the story’s sake. I’m not saying it has to go full RPG. But if you give me the ability to go to mission areas before the mission I would like that moment to have impact
