by far one of the best thought out camper builds ive seen that was more based on functionality and quality of the build. alot of videos ive seen were based on mostly how cool they looked and how cheap it can be done or best " gear". the fact you used reclaimed wood and scraps on this build and didnt affect the quality of the build is awesome. Good job bro. i would like to know cost and time for the build. im thinking of building a camper shell myself with tips and tricks youve done compared to spending over $3k sick video. please post another video of answered questions, 3-6month review, and maye what you wouldve done differently.
I was thinking of tackling making a slide in camper myself. As a mechanic I had some ideas but your videos really are giving me some great ideas!. The thing with store bought campers is they have stuff that I don’t need and things not where I want them. Thanks again

Very cool. Before Amie and I started traveling together I had a 93 Toyota Pickup, standard cab, short bed with a hightop campershell. I just had a sleeping platform with a bunch of storage underneath. No camper electrical at all. But that's what I took to Baja on the regular and I would probably still be in that thing if I wasn't trying to accommodate 2 people. That's the best part of a DIY setup. You get to design it just for your needs. Nobody makes a good camper commercially for 1 person. Most of them are trying to claim they accommodate 4+ people, but I have no idea where you'd put 4 peoples worth of food, water, and clothing let alone 4 peoples worth of surfboards😂

Do not forget the " window insect net" + weight. If off-road, the chassis will break because the cabin is heavy. Try to the test for off-road + cabin weight. Respect you.
The bad part about putting the water tank in the cab is that you’re gonna have to listen to the water slosh around while you’re driving. I do like the build though, giving me some ideas for some of the future builds I wanna do.
I've been thinking about how useful fiberglass could be, but I think you went a bit crazy with it. Are you building a camper or a boat? Or planning to go through 5' deep creeks? I can't see why fiberglass was needed inside. And the Sikaflex on all the things inside seem excessive, too. Saying that, it's an impressive amount of work and design. One day, I hope to build my own camper for my truck and this helps give me some ideas.
Glad to here in was helpful. The fiberglass interior may be overkill for you depending on the rest of the build design and how you intend to use it. If you're just trying to protect the wood some paint would probably suffice, but the fiberglass provides a lot of extra strength to the camper construction.
@@TheTravelingTogetherJournal I didn't even think about reinforcement. Does one layer make a big difference? I always thought you needed 3 or more layers with different placements so the weave doesn't line up every time.

We will be way more comfortable in just about any conditions. Now we have little Dulce, a pup we found in Mexico. She's a fan of traveling too. I am planning on going to expo west. I don't know about mountain west yet.
Thanks I'm not a big fan of airbags. I intend to pull apart the stock leaf packs and build custom packs that will handle the weight better, but hopefully be more progressive so they don't feel rough on dirt roads. I'd say airbags make more sense if you have a slide in camper that you occasionally load into a truck that you daily drive. That way you can leave the bags empty most of the time when the truck is light, and then you can pump up the bags when you load the camper and the vehicle needs the help.
44:07 We have our ancient Coleman propane two-burner camp-stove. Use, wipe, stow back in its cubby. . We also have three induction hot-plates. . We can use these: * inside the rig * on our permanent porch under its permanent roof * at the campfire or on a picnic-table. . We think a built-in 24/7/360° galley, used a few minutes daily, is wasted space.

I don't have any experience with fluid film. I've opted for paint products like Rustoleum Stop Rust Enamel. I like that they cure to a harder finish that dust isn't as prone to stick to and they don't wash off as easily as the softer undercoatings. I need to do some serious rust prevention in the front suspension/frame of this truck. I think I will do my best to paint it with a rust-blocking paint, then try a product like Fluid Film to spray inside the frame rails and tough to reach spots.
I’ve noticed you didn’t give yourself a seating and eating area. That can also double as a lounge area. I’m sure you are going to say you spend all your time outside but what about rain and bugs or cold?
I would like to have an eating/lounge dinette in the camper, but you can't have it all. In order to have the dinette I would have needed to make the camper bigger and/or give up storage and counter space. Coming from my last camper build, this one will be a big upgrade for rainy, windy, cold situations, but obviously still a compromise. It may not be the compromise that you would choose, but we like to travel with a lot of toys (surfing, hiking, fishing, kayaking gear) so we prioritize storage more than others may want to.
I had planned on using XPS, but when I started the build I couldn't get it anywhere in California or online without buying full pallets and paying a lot in shipping, so I considered alternatives. The pour foam I used results in a foam slightly stronger than 25psi xps with similar closed cell structure and it adheres itself to the sheathing (wood) so I didn't have to deal with trying to bond the foam
I've been waiting for them to reach out with a sponsorship 😂 Really, I spent a lot of time researching materials for this project, so I tried to pass that information along during the build. You'll notice I use sikaflex 221 when I want a sealant with some adhesive properties that's easy to use, but I bust out sikaflex 252 and the pneumatic caulking gun when I need a really strong bond. I also used a loktite product when I wanted a less flexible cured adhesive.

@@TheTravelingTogetherJournal Thanks! I have a 1992 F150 4x4 extra cab that I was toying around with the idea of turning it into a MH. Rear end is 3.55; capacity is 1900 pounds. It is a long bed. The weight of my f150 is about 800 pounds more than your Toy.
Really nice camper but unfortunately I don't weld both my knees are shot I'm working on two full knee replacements but other than that I can't do any kneeling down but it is really a nice camper I just wish I had that ability to build from Joseph Strauss here
yes I wish I could do that but make a camper on the back of a pickup but I can't my knees won't allow it going on two full knee replacements I'm just getting to the point that I could get down on my knees on the grass and that's hard for me but I wish I could do that
I have always liked the bilstein 4600s. You can feel the improved control but they don't require as much investment or maintenance as a higher end shock. As far as coils go... I haven't started down that road with our 4runner yet. I know the rear suspension was way too soft for the amount of gear we had on the one baja trip we've taken it on. 🤔 If I was going to dig into our 4runner right now I would do bilstein 4600s all around. Keep the stock front springs. Replace the rear springs with stock 5th gen springs (budget option) or ome 906 springs I replaced all the bushings in the rear with energy suspension bushings. They seem to be working well. Definitely stopped the death-wobble she was getting if we hit uneven pavement at over 65mph.
Why do you say it's "way too heavy for the truck"? Obviously lighter would be better, but my new curb weight is 5259LB. That's with full water tank, awning, fridge, toilet, and all the stuff you see in the video. That leaves me 741LB payload capacity. It's not a lot left, but doesn't seem way too heavy.

That would have made it more rigid, but I also wanted to keep the height to a minimum and have a sufficient surface area on the top of the frame for the Sikaflex 252 to adhere to. With the 2" width as the top surface the Sikaflex should be strong enough to secure the camper to the frame on it's own and that was part of the design consideration.
I have a question for you, would really appreciate your opinion if you have a minute to spare: Planning to overland the Americas starting late '24 early '25 with a Lance Truck Camper that i have 600w of solat and 560ah LifePO4 & 3500w inverter. It presently sits on a SRW F350 2wd with gas 6.8 V10 and under 100k. I have had the truck for 5-6 years, know it well. It is highly dependable and well maintained. I would like to have a 4x4 for the trip, but the used truck market is quite tight. I have debated buying a cab and chassis and adding a flatbed and storage oxes, etc. Obviously this opens a can of worms. Would you even consider doing the trip in a 2wd truck with AT or MT tires? I'm leaning that direction just to save the headache of building out a truck. There are many stories of disappointment online of people trying to get everything to fit for a truck camper. Obviously driving on the beach will likely be unwise, but besides the beach how often do you find yourself needing to use 4wd? Thank you for your thoughts! Love your channel, very inspiring! Regards
Hi Charles. Sounds like you have an exciting trip coming up. You definitely don't NEED 4x4 to drive the Pan American. How much you use 4x4 will depend on what interests you most about traveling through the region. We met people on the road that pretty much spent all their time in cities and towns. They loved going to markets and meeting people and that is what motivated their travels. As a result, they felt like their 4x4 land cruiser and roof top tent were a waist. We used 4x4 on a regular basis. We like to camp. Our travels were more motivated by a desire to experience nature so we would drive to less populated areas where the roads were often worse, particularly during the rainy season. 2wd will get you down most roads, but 4x4 will let you slowly, safely negotiate obstacles like rivers or washed out roads. So you might only use the 4x4 for 100 yards, but not having it would have required turning around or using recovery gear to get your 2wd through. An option could be to stick with your 2wd truck and just bring everything you'll want when you get stuck (shovel, traction boards, winch, ect.)

Cargo capacity -- about seven ton. . We did South America twenty-four months twenty-four thousand miles. Alaska, Panama, all over North and Central America. Summers up rough logger tracks to remote mountain lakes. Winters on isolated Baja beaches. . Two-wheel drive (2x4). We see converted euro-mil 4x4, 6x6, and a couple-three 8x8 ExpeditionVehicles. They rarely leave the road. If they stick the thing, they call the local military to drag them back to pavement. . To lighten your concerns, travel with a group of recovery experts.

@amiel3637 the trick is to rub baby powder on your exposed skin and just under where there is a cuff or collar. The powder gets in your pores, keeping the fiberglass out and it easily washes off after.

We will be way more comfortable in just about any conditions. Now we have little Dulce, a pup we found in Mexico. She's a fan of traveling too.

I'm not a big fan of airbags. I intend to pull apart the stock leaf packs and build custom packs that will handle the weight better, but hopefully be more progressive so they don't feel rough on dirt roads.
I'd say airbags make more sense if you have a slide in camper that you occasionally load into a truck that you daily drive. That way you can leave the bags empty most of the time when the truck is light, and then you can pump up the bags when you load the camper and the vehicle needs the help.

I don't have any experience with fluid film. I've opted for paint products like Rustoleum Stop Rust Enamel. I like that they cure to a harder finish that dust isn't as prone to stick to and they don't wash off as easily as the softer undercoatings.
I need to do some serious rust prevention in the front suspension/frame of this truck. I think I will do my best to paint it with a rust-blocking paint, then try a product like Fluid Film to spray inside the frame rails and tough to reach spots.

I’ve noticed you didn’t give yourself a seating and eating area. That can also double as a lounge area. I’m sure you are going to say you spend all your time outside but what about rain and bugs or cold?
I would like to have an eating/lounge dinette in the camper, but you can't have it all. In order to have the dinette I would have needed to make the camper bigger and/or give up storage and counter space. Coming from my last camper build, this one will be a big upgrade for rainy, windy, cold situations, but obviously still a compromise.
It may not be the compromise that you would choose, but we like to travel with a lot of toys (surfing, hiking, fishing, kayaking gear) so we prioritize storage more than others may want to.

What made you choose the expanding foam versus just foam board (polystyrene)?
I had planned on using XPS, but when I started the build I couldn't get it anywhere in California or online without buying full pallets and paying a lot in shipping, so I considered alternatives. The pour foam I used results in a foam slightly stronger than 25psi xps with similar closed cell structure and it adheres itself to the sheathing (wood) so I didn't have to deal with trying to bond the foam

Really, I spent a lot of time researching materials for this project, so I tried to pass that information along during the build. You'll notice I use sikaflex 221 when I want a sealant with some adhesive properties that's easy to use, but I bust out sikaflex 252 and the pneumatic caulking gun when I need a really strong bond. I also used a loktite product when I wanted a less flexible cured adhesive.

@@TheTravelingTogetherJournal Thanks! I have a 1992 F150 4x4 extra cab that I was toying around with the idea of turning it into a MH. Rear end is 3.55; capacity is 1900 pounds. It is a long bed. The weight of my f150 is about 800 pounds more than your Toy.
Really nice camper but unfortunately I don't weld both my knees are shot I'm working on two full knee replacements but other than that I can't do any kneeling down but it is really a nice camper I just wish I had that ability to build from Joseph Strauss here

Matt-- i have a 3rd gen 4runner. I want to drive mex. Its stock and im considering going bilstein 4600s. What coilovers/ bushings u suggest???
I have always liked the bilstein 4600s. You can feel the improved control but they don't require as much investment or maintenance as a higher end shock.
As far as coils go... I haven't started down that road with our 4runner yet. I know the rear suspension was way too soft for the amount of gear we had on the one baja trip we've taken it on. 🤔
If I was going to dig into our 4runner right now I would do bilstein 4600s all around. Keep the stock front springs. Replace the rear springs with stock 5th gen springs (budget option) or ome 906 springs
I replaced all the bushings in the rear with energy suspension bushings. They seem to be working well. Definitely stopped the death-wobble she was getting if we hit uneven pavement at over 65mph.

Why do you say it's "way too heavy for the truck"?
Obviously lighter would be better, but my new curb weight is 5259LB. That's with full water tank, awning, fridge, toilet, and all the stuff you see in the video.
That leaves me 741LB payload capacity. It's not a lot left, but doesn't seem way too heavy.

the rec tube frame bed should be upright. not flat side. for structural
That would have made it more rigid, but I also wanted to keep the height to a minimum and have a sufficient surface area on the top of the frame for the Sikaflex 252 to adhere to. With the 2" width as the top surface the Sikaflex should be strong enough to secure the camper to the frame on it's own and that was part of the design consideration.
I have a question for you, would really appreciate your opinion if you have a minute to spare:
Planning to overland the Americas starting late '24 early '25 with a Lance Truck Camper that i have 600w of solat and 560ah LifePO4 & 3500w inverter. It presently sits on a SRW F350 2wd with gas 6.8 V10 and under 100k. I have had the truck for 5-6 years, know it well. It is highly dependable and well maintained.
I would like to have a 4x4 for the trip, but the used truck market is quite tight. I have debated buying a cab and chassis and adding a flatbed and storage oxes, etc. Obviously this opens a can of worms.
Would you even consider doing the trip in a 2wd truck with AT or MT tires?
I'm leaning that direction just to save the headache of building out a truck. There are many stories of disappointment online of people trying to get everything to fit for a truck camper.
Obviously driving on the beach will likely be unwise, but besides the beach how often do you find yourself needing to use 4wd?

Hi Charles. Sounds like you have an exciting trip coming up.
You definitely don't NEED 4x4 to drive the Pan American.
How much you use 4x4 will depend on what interests you most about traveling through the region. We met people on the road that pretty much spent all their time in cities and towns. They loved going to markets and meeting people and that is what motivated their travels. As a result, they felt like their 4x4 land cruiser and roof top tent were a waist.
We used 4x4 on a regular basis. We like to camp. Our travels were more motivated by a desire to experience nature so we would drive to less populated areas where the roads were often worse, particularly during the rainy season. 2wd will get you down most roads, but 4x4 will let you slowly, safely negotiate obstacles like rivers or washed out roads. So you might only use the 4x4 for 100 yards, but not having it would have required turning around or using recovery gear to get your 2wd through.
An option could be to stick with your 2wd truck and just bring everything you'll want when you get stuck (shovel, traction boards, winch, ect.)

@amiel3637 the trick is to rub baby powder on your exposed skin and just under where there is a cuff or collar. The powder gets in your pores, keeping the fiberglass out and it easily washes off after.
