AMPs are definitely one of the most badass mech suits in SciFi for this very reason. Everything is well thought out and given incredible care to fit its exact role in the film. It probably didn't need this level of detail, but clearly its creators had just as much love the human machinery as they did for the alien flora and fauna. It both clashes and comes together perfectly.

Nearly everything about this film's world design feel incredibly well thought out. It's a believable interpretation of a near-Earth environment with atmospheric hazards and oversized life forms. So of course something like the AMP with its integrated (and redundant!) life support systems, hominid articulation and immediate user responsiveness would be designed! This is by far my favourite interpretation of small mechs. Bonus points to the variety of aero support vehicles seen in the film.

I love the design of this thing. It's basically a headless body, with the pilot operating from within the "chest" area, so the arms have to be held higher to approximate their position on the human body. The little details tell you someone really did sit down and think about how this thing would work. The increased space in the cockpit to accommodate the movement of the pilot's arms, the window behind the pilot's head with mirrors to look back through it, and the tank-sized weaponry that's similar enough in function to feel like a giant rifle and knife. The custom paint and "nose art" on some of these suits also really fits the aesthetic they were going for in this movie.
The fact that the Tone 30mm cannon in Titanfall operates and sounds very similar to this badass machine definitely has nothing to do with the fact that I mained it for as long as I played.

IF those guns were uniquely produced for them then yes, it would have been strange. But those are the same autocannons used on gunships and base turrets. That's basically what Avatar had - utility and transport vehicles armed with universal locally produced guns. This is de facto second generation of Cameron's loader bot with majority of design being the same. If you want to see how ridiculous they look with integrated weapon systems, go play AvP ie Aliens VS Predator \/(-_-)\/ You get two unusable hands and gun that is set too low to be usable. Because it's a humanoid body.

Honestly, this is one of my favorite mech designs in fiction. If it will ever be possible to actually make a mech, I think the AMP suits are the closest to what is actually possible. Because when talking about mechs the constant points of discussion are the Square Cube Law, how would the joints handle the stresses associated with supporting a large mass of metal, wouldn't the walkers just sink on soft soil with the small surface area of their feet? After all, if we want to put a lot of armor and firepower on something, we tend to then add tracks to it so it won't sink on mud. And that's just called a tank. So why even bother with mechs?
AMP suits are small enough to believe they could overcome these hurdles with proper materials, and they make perfect sense in an environment that land vehicles like tanks already have trouble navigating, like dense forests (the jungles of Pandora!). And they do other things that tanks can't, they're about mobility and utility rather than armor and firepower. Basically heavy infantry with a support role, we see them moving heavy loads of ammunition, and I could also imagine them rolling over flipped APC in a combat situation. Humvees would often end up on their side when they drove over a mine. Would be useful to have an AMP nearby for just such an occasion.
And most importantly, THEY'RE NOT DIGITIGRADE. Why are so many fictional mechs digitigrade? There's a reason humans and elephants are plantigrade.

      1. The square cube law just means that the volume of an object grows faster than its surface area, and is the main factor limiting organisms in size. Cells aren't very big because they wouldn't be able to transport substances from their surface deeper towards the center, same with land arthropods and oxygen, vertebrates don't get bigger than mammoths/dinosaurs because their bones wouldn't be able to support their weight. The same is true for vehicles, the Maus tank was impractical because it was too big, and tanks are a lot more sturdy than a mech with articulated limbs would be.
      2. Digitigrade legs act like springs, they are very good for running fast but not so good at supporting a lot of weight. If you put a lot of weight on a spring, it just crumples. Plantigrade legs in a standing position lock the joints and bones parallel to each other and perpendicular to the surface, in result they can take on a lot of weight, so bipeds like humans that only have 2 limbs to distribute the weight, and very heavy animals like elephants are plantigrade. There are exceptions like some dinosaurs, the T. rex was a digitigrade bipedal predator, but if you look at its body you'll notice that half of it is just the muscles and bones for the legs, they support the tremendous weight of the body.
Weight would be a much bigger factor for mechs since they'd be made of metals, armored, carrying weaponry, way more dense than animals. Digitgrade mechs just make no sense, unless you want some very light, fast, unarmored scouting vehicle, but even then I don't think we have the material science to keep the joints intact against the forces they'd be subject to. And yet in fiction there's ton of slow moving digitigrade mechs carrying missile pods and other BFGs. Just, why? What's the point? Just make it plantigrade, it's simpler, sturdier, more analogous to human joints, etc.

Great comment, i will add some things about it :
There is already a mech called the Method 2/3 (can't remember the exact number but it was either of them) developted in South Korea that is practically the AMP suit , however their biggest problem was powering it rather than legs or the balance, also i agree with you that is the most plausible mech design.
As per the last thing i think is due to the fact that digitigrade looks better and digitigrade legs of animals are faster and tend to be more efficient than human legs (plantigrade) , however many people forget that plantigrade do have advantages over digitigrade
As with the elephant part i did some googling and turns out the elephant leg type is an hybrid ! , is plantigrade but also somethat digitigrade , this can be infered when looking at the bones , perhaps we should take more of a look of how elephants legs are when we want to make mechs , elephant legs have the speed bonus of digitigrade but can support their weight very well like a plantigrade due to the soft but strong structures that it has in the sole of the foot , they also absorb the impact of the walking and make them less noisy (elephants aren't the master of the silence but is interesing to see the additional thing)

    • @ulforcemegamon3094

@@Horny_Fruit_Flies as per your second comment there is an paper which is interesing to look at regarding the subject, and that is the Birdbot robot, it is a robot which is very efficient at walking and running , is modeled after an ostrich and other running birds , is mostly uses springs and cables to hold the weight of the robot , the thing is that the scaled up versión of the leg is 1.75 meters tall , weights 75kg and also can carry a load of 2243 kg , while not saying we should do something like the AMP suit but with Bird legs , i think we could use cables and springs to help the mech to hold their weight effectively

    • @Horny_Fruit_Flies
      @Horny_Fruit_Flies ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@ulforcemegamon3094 I remember the Method "mech", tbh I was not impressed with it, an oversized box on shaky legs is something that the Mythbusters could build in a month with $2000. Bipedal robots is still something that we aren't close to cracking, Boston Dynamics are basically the best in the business and even their Atlas is a bit ungainly, which is why they focus so much on their quadrupedal robots so much. More stable.
The ostrich legs are pretty interesting. I think I found the paper; "BirdBot achieves energy-efficient gait with minimal control using avian-inspired leg clutching" but can't see the part about the weights it could potentially carry. The one in the video demonstration on TH-cam is tiny. I like the idea of a springed cable acting as a single muscle for the entire limb, not something that is found in animals. Anyway, I'm not saying it's impossible for digitgrade mechs to exist, my point is simply that they are more complex (at least 1-2 additional joints) and can carry less weight (spring effect, smaller feet surface area) than their plantigrade analogues simply by their geometrical properties. If we had materials strong enough, we could build digitigrade mechs that are both sturdy and very fast, but for the time being we don't have the materials nor technology for either digi- or plantigrade large robots. As we develop stronger materials I'm very sure that plantigrade designs will be the first to become viable.

@@sergeantassassin3425 in this case, nukes aren't ruining everything. If anything, it would be a _feature_ not a bug given the hostility of the wildlife. That and nukes are heavily dependent on detonation height. An airburst is optimal for low-fallout and limiting actual damage but useless against hardened targets. A _near_ ground burst (like _Shot Grable_ during Upshot Knothole) is absolutely devastating while limiting fallout. Ground bursts are the nastiest, as they maximize target damage and great against hardened targets.
