Vast majority of the names on this list are swimmers and gymnasts for obvious reasons. Number of medals is not the only indicator of greatness. Imagine all the sports that there is only 1 gold opportunity and even if you win golds in 5 consecutive Olympics, you won’t make it to this list.
i prefer to win 1 medal as the fastest guy on the planet such Usan Bolt with unbeated record still than 5 medals of Phelps (all beated records) of swimming like that or like this or like this + like that or like that + like this
Exactly. If another sport has as many events like swimming does, then I'm sure there would have been another talented athlete who would have won much more medals, like Phelps did.
Mark Spitz is one of the GOATs of swimming many don’t know about. He retired at the age of 22, after participating in two Olympics and winning a total of 11 medals (in the 1972 games, he swam in 7 events and won 7 gold medals while setting 7 world records). If he had stayed in swimming as an amateur, and swam in another 2-3 Olympics (although he would not have been in the 1980 games as the US boycotted them that year), he likely would have been in the same rare air as Phelps.
No, you are mistaken. In the 1970s a 22-year-old swimmer was already a 'mature' swimmer with relatively low chances of further improvement, so Spitz could have at most tried to qualify for the 1976 Olympics, but with no guarantees of winning individual medals. Roland Matthes, another legendary swimmer from Germany, actually competed at Montreal Olympics in 1976 at the age of 26yo and was regarded as a unusual case of longevity at that level! I was a swimmer in the 1980s, and in that decade a 25-yo swimmer was still regarded as 'old'. So no, Spitz would have had no chances to get much closer to Phelps' medals record.
@@djo-dji6018 I would not agree that 22 years of age constituted a "mature" swimmer with low chances of continuing to improve as they age. A male peaks physically at around the age of between the late 20s and early 30s. Given this, there is no reason to think that Spitz would not have continued to improve if he had dedicated his next 8--12 years to being a world class swimmer. What has changed is how today's athletes can support themselves financially while dedicating their full time to their sport. Both in terms of money provided by the government and outside commercial/NIL financial deals, today's athletes can profit and support themselves; this is especially true for high profile sports like swimming, track and gymnastics. This was not true 3-plus decades ago, when athletes had to be true "amateurs" and had little to no way to profit off of their names and image. This meant most athletes would compete in one or maybe two Olympics and then transition to college or a job to provide a living for themselves and their families. This was true of both Spitz, which meant he basically retired at the age of 22 so that he could make a living off of his past accomplishments. IF he had stayed in competitive swimming, there is no reason to think that he did not have at least another 2-3 Olympics in him, which would have likely put him north of a total of 20 total medals. It's not like the human body ages more slowly now vs 40 years ago, but rather many top athletes would retire to pursue making a better financial life for themselves. I can't really comment on Roland Matthes (he was a backstroke specialist and an all-time great in this swimming stroke) as his situation was different than Spitz, being an East German and likely having more financial support from the government?? It seems he retired after three Olympics at an age of 26 or 27 to pursue a medical degree and eventually became an orthopedic surgeon.
In Fencing and Artistic Swimming you can only take 2 Gold in each Olympic. 🇺🇲 Michael Phelps got 28 Medals (🥇23 🥈3🥉2) in 4 Olympic Game (2004, 2008, 2012, 2026), while 🇷🇺 Svetlana Romashina got 7 Medals (🥇All Gold) in 4 Olympics (2008, 2012, 2016, 2020), she could take 8 Gold, but she wasn't part of the 2004 Duet Category. Romashina never placed lower than first at any of events with her 41 medals combined.
So did Usain, his team got Disqualified in one 4x 100 but it wasn't his fault, so he is better, I would argue that he is the greatest Olympian in history
Without taking away the brilliance of these athletes, swimming, then gymnastics and then Athletics have multi-events that are similar and have relays. Shooting and fencing is just a change of weapon. I feel this devalues the single event sports where the option to win multiples is zero. In other ords, there are some amazing athletes whose sport does not allow them to compete for five, six, or seven medals at a single olympics. Interesting though.
Simone Biles is 4’11 😅 no way she’s taking anything hater. And Phelps has never been caught or accused so where are you getting this from? Being a sore loser
Katie Ladecky now has 12 medals and will definitely add at least another 2 by the end of Paris. Emma McKeon also now has 12 medals with a possibility of another 2 in Paris. Missing from the list is Kyle Chalmers now with 8 medals with another likely relay medal coming up in Paris.
You have to not only be great at those 4-5 "opportunities" but you're also racing more often. If swimmer A is only racing in 1 event and thus only has 3 races total (prelim, semi, and finals), he's going to have much more energy left than Phelps who may have already swam in 12 races (4 events + relays, etc). The fact that Phelps is swimming in 2-4x more races and STILL beating everyone else is incredible.

The most impressive is not even here, Mijain Lopez from Cuba, 5 golds, 5 different olympics, in 5 possible, he needed to go to 5 different Olympic Games to earn 5 golds, the GOAT for me.

Swimming lends itself to racking up medals. There are 21 Olympic swimming races. (Track has 11.) Imagine swimming was only the freestyle at 50/100/200/400/800/1600m, two freestyle relays (50/100), 50/100m backstroke, and 50m butterfly. No one wins eight golds in a single program. It is also important to note that it was really Phelps’ longevity was most amazing, as opposed to his winning multiple events in one Olympics. Mark Spitz won 11 Olympic medals (9 gold) over two Olympics. After seven golds in ‘72 his subsequent endorsements paid him the modern day equivalent of $70m. He retired at just 22 years old. If he races in 76, at just 26 years old he very well could have won another seven. (There is also a physics component to swimming which allows an athlete to be competitive at the 100/200/400m, which are equivalent, via time, to 400/800/1500 in track. No one runs Olympic level 400/800/1500 in the same body. The muscle mass requirements vary too greatly where in swimming buoyancy mitigates that concern.)
Usain Bolt could break the records if we have exact number of swimming sport Let’s have 25m , 50 m, 75 m, 100 m, 125 m, 150 m, 175 m, 200m Bolt would get at least 24 gold medal

He was severely injured in the first round of the 1956 horse jumping competition, but did not want to let his teammates down for their chance to win the team competition and started heavily on painkillers, almost sedated, to the second round. He could barely control his horse Halla, but the brave horse carried him home, winning both the team and individual gold medal.
One important factor is how many seperate events a specific sport has. Now, swimming has lots of events so there are more chances for a talented swimmer to earn more medals. So, there could be a very talented athlete in a sport but that sport has only 1 event so that athlete can get only 1 medal.

1 weightlifting of 200 or more kilow need the energy of 2 swimming events
This video is incredible but only lists the Olympic Summer Games. I was waiting for some Winter Games athletes with multiple medals. Example: long track speed skater Ireen Wüst with 13 medals.
Actually Usain Bolt won 9 gold medals, but at Beijing Olympics’ relay , the first leg of Jamaican team used drug. So Bolt was stripped of his one of the gold medals because of it.
I'm still pissed off bout that.
The team cheated

Why havent you included the Winter Olympians??..
Usain Bolt should have won 20 medals at least.
The most impressive is not even here, Mijain Lopez from Cuba, 5 golds, 5 different olympics, in 5 possible, he needed to go to 5 different Olympic Games to earn 5 golds, the GOAT for me.
Isabell Werth is on 4 now with 13 medals, believe me she become 15-17 in the next 8 years

Alexey Nemov became the Best Male Athlete at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. (at the home Olympics for US Athletes). also, Alexey Nemov became the Best Male Athlete at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. at the Olympic Games held at the junction of two Millennia. such Olympic Games are held no more often than once in one Thousand years.
at each of these Olympic Games, Alexey Nemov won five (5) Individual medals and one (1) team medal.
I used to idolize Olympians with awe until I found out that they were all on drugs and they all claimed they had asthma and relied on steroids.

Considering how how hard Artistic Swimming is, Svetlana Romashina is truly remarkable
'its really hard to get over 10 medals'
Phelps: 'hold my beer'
Phelps GOAT 🙌
Léon Marchand has already won 3 gold medals
4 gold + 1 bronze
Are Olympics winter taken into account?
I expect Summer McIntosh will be on this list after these Olympics. 😊🇨🇦
No way
Usain Bolt could break the records if we have exact number of swimming sport
Let’s have 25m , 50 m, 75 m, 100 m, 125 m, 150 m, 175 m, 200m
Bolt would get at least 24 gold medal
C’mon man no wants to see a 2 second or 5 second race.
Phelps is easily one of the top athletes in history. He and Bobby Fischer sit on top.

You left out a lot of interesting stories in your narrations.
For example: do you know the story of equestrian Heinz Günther Winklers first Olympic gold medal ?
He was severely injured in the first round of the 1956 horse jumping competition, but did not want to let his teammates down for their chance to win the team competition and started heavily on painkillers, almost sedated, to the second round. He could barely control his horse Halla, but the brave horse carried him home, winning both the team and individual gold medal.
Lisa Carrington is missing from your list. ( medals (8 gold, 1 bronze)
Just watching Leon Marchand have already 3 🥇. He could be win another and many 🥇 this year and Los Angeles 2028.

Katie Ledecky has 13 medals now
At the end she finish in Brisbane Olympic n collect more medals
One important factor is how many seperate events a specific sport has. Now, swimming has lots of events so there are more chances for a talented swimmer to earn more medals. So, there could be a very talented athlete in a sport but that sport has only 1 event so that athlete can get only 1 medal.
You missed out Laura Kenny, Jason Kennys wife and most successful British Olympic athlete with 5 Golds and 1 Silver in Cycling....
getting a medal during swimming is easy but athletics not so.Usain Bolt will always be " The REAL KING of Olympia" !
If it's so easy, why has no one else in history ever come close to the amount of medals Phelps has achieved? Michael Phelps is the real king of Olympia.
since that's the case, how many gold medals do you have??

Michael Phelps is a doping addict. He also took various doping agents, according to leaked information from Fancy Bears
@@samyang9562 Phelps, Sinner, Biles took doping all the time and therefore they are fake, and the leaders of sports in the world helped them avoid punishment. Double standards in sports and the world and now it has become a nasty norm. Because of this, he becomes uninteresting to people.
It would have been better if the order was who got the most gold, then who got the silver, then who got the bronze...like the order of the list of countries in terms of the medals they got in the Olympic Games.
Merlene Ottey, the unsung queen of sprint. 9 medals, still the record to my knowledge for women in track & field, and none of them are gold. She was cursed.
Nurmi won gold 1500m and 5000m during 1 hour. Paris 1924.
Crazy! This is probably one of the most amazing feats in the history of the Olympic Games.
