I did that very thing for several years in Colorado. Loading bags the handle is placed toward the aircraft so the guy in the pit stacking bags can grab them easily off the belt. Unloading the handle side is placed down so the rampie on the ground can grab them easily and load em' into the cart. Would also marshall the a/c into and out of the gate and drive the pushback tug. I was also in charge of maintaining the belt loaders and baggage and pushback tugs.
Bags have reinforcing on the back side to protect the contents so why do handlers always thrown them on the soft front?

You expect them to lift the bags that are heavy as shit and put them softly? And do it lile 20x+ again and again?
The bags are stacked inside the plane, and it helps to have a flat surface (the back) facing up.
