Dave, What about making a quick time lapse video for clearing the old lap and packing the equipment, also could you show us the right packaging for moving equipments ? You got a gold mine dumpster :D :D :D
I spend a lot of time looking for things too, I usually try to tidy up until I find the thing I want , that way I feel like the time spent looking is a bit less wasteful.

This makes me feel so much better about my mess(es)! From painting cars to retail buyer jobs I'm usually not the most organized person, but after chronic injuries, I create disaster areas. I'm often forced to stop working on a project for days or even weeks at a time without warning. That tends to make big messes. Plus when I've only got a few minutes of time to sit or stand per day, on a good day, organizing and cleaning is a big endeavor. My mess is usually way worse than this, but after seeing this from the YT resident EE Pro, Dave. -Mess- * *Professional* ('Why yes, I have a very "professional" work bench!') if your looking for them, your main casios are on the soldering bench at 10:14. and the older one was parted with the red sea at 9:03. to the left. and two more went to the right at 9:09.
New beginnings from the ashes of the past. Thanks for the tour mate! Much like my own space, riddled with the corpses of old projects. Can we see the new space? I'm excited for you!
After my lab moved from one room in the house to a larger room, 18 years ago(!), I still vividly remember the location of equipment in the old room when I search for something.
Depending on how much more floor space you have between your workbench and mailbag bench, you could go with a row or two of shelves. Stand them back-to-back so that there is loads of accessible storage space. Accessibility is top priority when it comes to keeping things organized. That, and having a clue where things should go.
I’ve worked with electricians and radio techs and have never seen a tidy office. Some have been partly methodically sorted and labelled but there was always stuff on the floor or piled on top of each other on a bench waiting to be worked on or for someone to either trash, sell or put in longterm storage
Davie, You're a braver man then me. I received my EE in 1979 and I've work for a number of companies over the years. There is a positive correlation between the best labs and the most clutter. The most creative people I have known, perhaps not the most productive often worked in such surroundings, you are in good company. As I said you are a brave man, I could not share my lab on YT... Congrats on the new space, I'm looking forward to seeing it.
Oh good. I dont feel so bad about my workshop and lab bench being utter disasters now. Pretty much the same thing I have going on. Partially finished projects and cluttered shelving and bench space everywhere. I agree it makes you less productive. Need a bigger space for sure, both of us.
Oh THANK YOU for this video!! I don't feel NEARLY as bad now knowing Im not the only semi unorganized person. I'm also very grateful I have SO much space compared to so many people it seems.
538 square feet. My crappy 1 bedroom apartment was about 600 square feet. My old boss used to say "if you've got time to lean, you've got time to clean" so I never find time to lean anymore. There is always productive work to do.
For things I am immediately working on, I find the stackable bins quite handy for keeping my working tools and parts in. Less time lost trying to find a tool I set down 10 minutes ago or even 10 seconds ago. For dealing with my own personal inventory management problems, I use Jira as a crude inventory management system. Each container gets a ticket and any item that goes into that container gets a ticket with a reference to the container ticket. I also take a picture of the item and attach it to the ticket. It works well for things that are just lying around unused and getting in the way, but provides a way to quickly find them if I need them.
Haha, I learned to program on one of the MCS 8085 kits. My instructor had custom made aluminum cases for us, and we built up the whole board in class. Learned a lot on one of those. Then I loaned it to a friend who wanted to work on the flight simulators and the Denver International Airport. He aced his pre-hire exam because of that kit. Memories!
I thought my workspace was messy, I never would have guessed it was this disorganized from watching the videos, but honestly I don't mind the mess at all.
Could Dave 2 make a forum post or a livestream so other people can join in on the Padauk reverse engineering? I think it will be more difficult to do alone. We need some way to get people together to work on this.
12:53 I doubt Dave will see this, but I remember finding through Pinterest (but I can't remember what site it was on) that someone had done a nice colour restoration on it, even though the visible colour spectrum bit ends up being somewhat off.
Curious why you don't setup the equipment in permanent spots on the shelf above the bench and stack it a bit more tightly (like Shariar does). If you group it carefully you probably won't need to move anything.
Thanks for sharing your mess Dave, I also have the same issue as the more projects I have on the go the more clutter I have laying around. That's is just what us smart dudes do. I think it bigclives turn to show us his clutter.
It's just like home. 😗 Use the move to organize. If you have the space, dump everything into a staging area in the new space and only move what you need into your workspace. After a month or two, consider dumping what remains in the staging area.
Go buy a stack more of those clear plastic boxes and get everything sorted into those. Gets everything sorted and ready for going on a shelf or the floor at the new place, and you can generally see what's in them unlike cardboard boxes. Get a marker pen and write on the box what category of items are in there (ie multimeters) so that you can easily find stuff at the new place. And once everything is in the boxes it'll take only a couple of hours to get everything moved. I've moved house twice in the last 3 years so I know your pain!
It's been a while since we had a full tour of your lab space, Dave. We've definitely seen it in worse shape than this. I noticed the word "vevy" on the white board by the door. :) What is that gray statue like thing on the floor seen at the 4:00 minute mark with some white thing hanging off it? I noticed an A2000 machine. Nice. I finally got around to buying an anti-static mat for my workbench. To put in place I had to clear everything off the table. It helped me tidy up my bench. It has accumulated a few things since then but it is a lot tidier than it was. For what you need to do I think you might need about a week. BTW, you might not be able to live stream the process but you can still record it for later upload.
This is surely half way through packing up - not 'before you started' Dave ? :o/ Great to see your hoard of stuff anyway...I was really expecting to see a spare EEVblog dmm as a door stop somewhere in there...
Jizz. I was thinking I am a monstrous hoarder and have a mess in my lab, but Dave elevates this to new levels. I am sure there is a "system" in this chaos ;)
It would be fun if your review videos ended by showing where the new acquisition goes in The Pile... Don't forget to take those custom lights you had put in!

Call it about 10.05 sq ft per sq meter so about 525 sq. Close not exact . Call it 10sq ft per meter and your close enough to understand size. Regards enjoy the tour.
The Ikea shelving system was called "Broder". They are well worth picking up if you can find them second hand. It's a shame Ikea replaced them with a vastly inferior product.
Wow, my shop is almost as much as a mess. I'm not sure it is a space limitation, but a mental organization issue. When I go from one project to the next, its hard to stay properly organized. More space will mean more of a mess. lol
Finish a project before you start another. I have the same problem but I force myself to clean and put everything in its place at the end of the day. It forces me the throw away things that hold little to no value.
Aren't those plastic bins a static electricity nightmare? I've always wondered, because they're very cheap, but when you handle them taking them in and out, it's very easy to generate static, or isn't it? Are they like static dissipative or something? How would you tell?

I always say “it isn’t a mess, it’s an anti-theft system”. By the time a thief can find anything, I’ve come back from lunch. Lol
