    I absolutely love your channel. I purchased two dolls from Bountiful to try my hand at reborning. I will first study your tutorials before I risk making a mess of my purchases. I do have a question, how did you get into reborning? Your voice is very soothing, it makes me believe that I will do a good job, but yikes, I'm so nervous. Hence the many hours of watching your video before I give it a go. Thanks for giving your time to do these videos.

    Your videos are truly helping me! I'm on my third reborn! Question...Do you use a primer first? Before the nude layer?

    Hi I am new to reborning got my first kit. (yay) However do you have a video on how to use the NuWave oven? it is just how I roll, before I get one I want to know how it works and How I will need to use it. I do not seem to be able to find any instructions. Just point me in the right direction. Thanks

    • @Customdollbabycom
      @Customdollbabycom  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bann Hicks Yes, I'm planning to do a video on that soon. I get a lot of oven questions! But I don't want to hold you up, so here are the highlights:
      1. Cover the pan with a white towel to prevent vinyl from contacting any surface in the oven
      2. Always use the extender ring to keep your parts as far away as possible from the heating element
      3. Arrange vinyl parts on your towel so that they do not touch one another or the oven. Some kits are too big to bake all at once
      4. Use the 60% power setting - corresponds to 250F - to cure paint for 8-9 minutes. For a varnish or medium, bake for 15 minutes. Remove the top when the cycle is done so parts cool faster.
      Hope that helps!
      Kim

      Can I use a normal oven to bake the painted doll limbs?

    • @TheDisneyGirl
      @TheDisneyGirl 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, use a Nuwave or convectional oven because if you use the same oven you make food in, the residue from paint or vinyl is toxic and can make you sick if it gets on your food.

    i forgot to ask on this kit did u neutralize and do you always have too if kit is already neutral.. thanks

    • @Customdollbabycom
      @Customdollbabycom  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I did not neutralize this Realborn. The vinyl was already very pale. I usually only neutralize the Real Effect (too orange) or Secrist (too pink) kits. But depending on the complexion I'm shooting for, I don't have to neutralize those either. Rule of thumb: if your base coat looks chalky on the vinyl, you may need to neutralize first.

    Hi Kim I am just starting out with reborning my own doll kits and I wanted to know is it ok to just use a regular oven instead of a nuwave oven. But I also notice my paint comes off under the neck so am I doing something wrong?

    • @Customdollbabycom
      @Customdollbabycom  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Charmaine Miller That's a great question. There are a couple problems with using a regular oven:
      1. It's difficult to maintain correct temperature. If you use an oven thermometer, you'll notice that the temperature fluctuates a lot during a baking cycle - below and above the temperature you set. Vinyl is very heat sensitive and can melt during these fluctuations. A NuWave oven maintains precise temperature during the baking cycle so there is no risk of melting (unless, of course, you accidentally set it to the wrong temperature. Been there, done that. LOL)
      2. It's a health hazard. Vinyl puts out pretty nasty and toxic fumes when it is hot. In addition to these fumes getting into your kitchen, some of the evaporated vinyl stays in your oven! When you heat the oven again to bake food, this left over vinyl returns to its gaseous state and can transfer to your food. The NuWave is portable, so you can set it outside, in a garage or in a room with a good ventilation system.
      3. It's not terribly expensive, so get two and use the second one for cooking. I acquired my dad's NuWave when he moved. It cooks frozen french fries to perfection - crispy on the outside, warm and soft on the inside. Yum!
      Now, I just need to find someone who works as NuWave so I can start getting paid for all this free advertising. LOL!
      If the paint isn't sticking to the doll in a certain spot, there could be a few things going on :
      1. Due to the temp issues with a regular oven, the paint may not have reached the right temperature. Genesis needs to maintain a temperature of at least 250*F for at least 8 minutes to cure. If you oven didn't hold that temp for that long, the paint never cured.
      2. Secondly, it could be the vinyl.
      a. If the vinyl has a slick spot from a manufacturing defect, the paint won't stick to that spot. Adding a varnish to it may help - if you can get the varnish to stick. If the vinyl is truly defective, the manufacturer is typically willing to replace the bad part.
      b. If the vinyl is "dirty" the paint won't stick. Vinyl may arrive with manufacturers grease on it. It will also pick up oil from your hands when you handle it. Any of these things will make it harder for the paint to stick. A thorough bubble bath in a grease-fighting dish detergent will fix that problem.
      Well, I'm sure you weren't looking for an essay in response to your question, LOL, but I hope it helps.
      Thanks!
      Kim :)

    • @peachyxx
      @peachyxx 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sophe Kathe shouldnt bake in a home oven. The base coat is to protect the vinyl from future colors like vein blue from staining the vinyl

    • @Customdollbabycom
      @Customdollbabycom  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +NuHoangThanhnu TraiTaoThomusa Its good to paint everything in the base coat, including lips and nails. This helps protect the vinyl from being stained by later painting layers. There's no right answer for the number of layers you need. Some artist do 20 or more layers. I don't think I do quite so many. Its a matter of how much color you would like to see on your doll. Its okay if you don't like how the doll comes out the first time. I made many bad babies before I felt good enough to make dolls for sale. It is part of the learning process :)

  • @Sydneyblue101
    @Sydneyblue101 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Okay, so for the base coat, can I use something other than Flesh 08? Would the baby skin color work? I wanted to wait until I sold another doll before I bought more painting supplies, but if it's absolutely necessary I'll get the flesh set now.

      +Enchanted Creations Baby skin works well too, especially if that's what you're planning to use for the complexion. :)

    KIM" HOW ARE YOU ? WHAT IS THE MATT VARNISH FOR ON THE REBORN DOLL ? SEAL FOR FINAL PAINTING DONE ? SHOULD I THINNER IT WITH ORDORLESS ? HOW DO YOU SEAL YOUR DOLL FOR CURSE THE PAINT NOT FADE OFF ?. PLEASE YOU HELP ME IDEA.THANKS.

    • @Customdollbabycom
      @Customdollbabycom  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +NuHoangThanhnu TraiTaoThomusa There's a few ways to do it - sometimes I mix it with paint thinner of thinning medium. Sometimes I can add a little flesh color to it and use matte varnish straight. Here are all my sealing demos: customdollbaby.com/3/category/skin%20texturing/1.html

      +Lori Widney I've heard that they can, but it's not recommended. You're best bet is to use a silicone pigment with the same kind of silicone your doll was poured in - otherwise it might peel off. Here are some of my favorite silicone painting kits: reflectionscasting.com/shop.html

    Hi love your tutorials!
    ? 4 U. I have 2 babies that have been painted, 1 with hair (wig).
    First of all I hate the wig, it is mohair. I just don't like it.
    And, after watching your tutorials I realized that these
    dolls look awful. I followed Bountiful Babies for beginners.
    What can I do about the wig and eye lashes. Also I overstuffed
    1of the babies so that in it's self needs, which is an easy fix.
    Can you help?
