This was arguably the first music video ever. Elvis' voice just kills it. And he choreographed all the dance moves. Michael Jackson always tributed this as one of his major influences.

Historically, this video by Elvis Presley is the first music video in the world. I think that's what it says in the history books. Elvis was the first artist to change the world. Without Elvis Presley the world would still be an “old” world.

This was from movie “Jailhouse Rock.” Elvis did choreography. He was about 19 here. Pre-Army days.
Close. Jailhouse Rock was 1957 so he was 22, and the movie was actually released a few months before he was drafted
Elvis didn’t choreograph it. The choreographer created this based on elvis’ natural moves.

I tend to agree with that. Until the Colonel held him back after the army stint doing some of those movies with the same old tired plots, and some of the songs were really forgettable. Those Turkeys would have failed if it hadn't been for the fact that Elvis was in them and gave it his best shot with what he had to work with, even he hated most of them. Thank God he broke free and resurrected his singing career. I truly believe Colonel Tom Parker ruined him once he got out of the army.

Fact is US entertainers rarely performed outside of the US in those days with the exception of entertainers who traveled to Europe to entertain the Troops WW2. Elvis was drafted , served in the US Army at the height of his career. He most certainly was no thug nor was he unable to get a passport.

This was actually the world's 1st music video and it was done in '57 out of his movie Jailhouse Rock. The future was set for Music Videos!!!!!!! It was another #1 hit for him in '57 with about 5 or 6 others. All multi million selling hits. It all started in'56 With Heartbreak Hotel and in '56 he had about 5 or 6 #1 its multi million selling. He was topping the charts with anything he put out. That's when the started calling him The King of the Charts. Staying there for several weeks in a row. The world had never seen anything like this. He often wandered why he was the chosen one to set the stage for the future. He often wandered WHY he had to be ELVIS!!!! Alot of pressure was about to be at stake. He had over 600 songs. It will take quiet a journey. There's Elvis-50's, Elvis-60's and Elvis-70's. There's Elvis gospel, country, blues, pop and rock. I have a long list. Let's explore together!!! I love to see young people discover Elvis! People new to Elvis always know he's called the King of Rock 'N Roll, but I've noticed most requests are for songs from 1968 and later. Of course, all of these are fantastic, but I feel like you're missing out on a lot of what changed music as we knew it and made Elvis a star. He recorded a ton of songs in all different genres in 1956-57. Pretty much the same thing happens with Johnny Cash requests. Except most requests for him is for songs at the very tail end of his career. Causing reactors to miss a much larger catalog of his work that he's best known for.

Glad you guys enjoyed this performance by a young Elvis as much as many of us have. It's pretty hard to sweep aside his talent and enjoyment/enthusiasm for his work. I was never his biggest fan but I believe the man was born to be a star.

"Ghost of a Chance" ........ After the song was recorded, it was clear that it was going to be a hit, So the movie was renamed Jailhouse Rock. The single was released in September 1957 ....... "Jailhouse Rock" has one of the most memorable intros in rock history ....... Two guitar chords with snare drum hits ....... The intro last just six seconds ....... But the pattern repeats throughout the verses ....... Establishing a firm musical hook that remains the envy of songwriters ....... ABC television ran a series of educational cartoons called "Schoolhouse Rock" in the '70s. Millions of kids learned about grammar, history, and astronomy from them. The title was a play on this song.
Ozzy Osbourne played a heavy metal version in 1987 when he did a tour of prisons.
Sha-Na-Na played this at Woodstock in 1969. Very few of the attendees saw their performance, as they didn't go on until Monday morning (the event was scheduled to end at midnight on Sunday, but ran long) ........ In 2007 ....... Chris Rock performed this on the Movies Rock TV special, where modern pop artists performed classic movie songs. Brown re-created Elvis' scene from the movie .........
That kind of production probably influenced Micheal Jackson's video for Beat it.

One of my favorite Elvis song is Crawfish. Shows how versatile his music is.
Although it's a scene in a movie, I believe this is consider the first music video.
i'm not sure that it can really be called a literal video since that didn't exist then; all they did was take the dance scene from the film & put it onto a video so we all can see that part w-out having to watch the entire film

This was a scene from the movie "Jail House Rock", named after the song he recorded I think. Elvis was smooth! he was only about 18 or 19 years old, and was already a huge star.

Thx for this -- there's a detailed story about how it all happened & i think because Romero didn't get credit, no one knew how it all came together; an apology was printed later in Variety mag. but too late, i think; i also believe the lack of credit may have been intentional since there was a rift between Romero & the studio.

Elvis did 31 movies. This was from Jailhouse Rock. He sang at least 1 song in all of his movies except one. Charro from 1969 is the only movie where the only music at all was the title song.
Elvis knew he only had a contract for a few more movies and he was ready to get back to what he loved..being on stage in front of his fans...so he did the '68 Comeback Special to test the waters and to make sure he could still pull the crowds. By 1970, he had finished all his movies and hit the stage in Vegas before going on tour again.

It's time for this foolishness to stop. Believe it, or not .. many, many white people can dance. Tap dancing came from the white Irish people, then black people started putting their own spin on it. Elvis is the only artist to be in EVERY Music Hall of Fame. Someone always has to come under every video of Elvis and say something derogatory, or try to take credit for his singing & dancing. It's not going to work. He was my father's 5th cousin and we are very proud of him.

As far as "first" -- read what came before Elvis that was labeled "video;" i.e., w-Tony Bennett's song in 1956 being the "actual first." But whatever & whenever Elvis did what he did, it always better & outshined everyone else.

Loved your reaction very much Elvis was the best friend i ever had in my entire life. we met when i was 17 yrs old. our friendship lasted past that one day in time we were friends for 10 yrs. up until the day he left us. He asked nothing of me and i asked nothing from him he needed a friend and so did i we were that for each other he never judged me and i never judged him. All the memories of my friend are tucked safe in my heart forever. dancing and singing breaks my heart because i know he is not here anymore my mind understands but my heart never will, i saw him a few weeks before he passed we had a short conversation which i will never share again because people are so nasty and comment hurtful heart breaking things they do not know me but they still can't keep their mouths closed about things they know nothing about. I walk past Graceland everyday love from the one and only Memphis Tn. btw fun fact the instruments were cardboard cut outs. and it was all Elvis, no lipsyncing.

This is from the 1957 movie, Jailhouse Rock. Elvis was 22, & this dance sequence from the movie is often cited as his "greatest moment on screen." It's always been one of my favorites by EP! Also, Alex Romero was the film's choreographer, but he utilized Elvis' input, and Elvis spent the evening before filming being coached by Russ Tamblyn (Riff in the movie classic, West Side Story), making sure he had all the moves down pat.
Maybe if Romero got credit for this people would know the story but he was not given credit & the studio published an apology later in Variety magazine. I think it was intentional because there was a rift between Romero & the studio.

He was not lip-syncing , the sound and picture were recorded on 2 seperate track back then. Michael Jackson sang while dancing on stage, it the same. Elvis and also Michael are in a class of musicians that few ever achieve. If you watch We are the world - video you will see the top vocalist of all time.
