tom tried that at the very beginning of the podcast but unfortunately it never really got the views so it was decided to do it just in highlights form instead.
@@Dog1818YT It was because uploading short and long videos messed up the channel's algorithm, the most viewed video of the channel is the only full length episode.
My main knowledge of roller derby is that Silver Age Lois Lane used her training in the Kryptonian martial art of klurkor to fight and evil roller-derby team, because the Silver Age was like that (Lois being good at violence didn't start there, though, she was a dangerous fighter even in the late 1930s).
My thought on hearing the question was that it was some sort of board game which previously used a metal figurine for the 'bank' game piece, but switched to a flat cardboard token to reduce cost. (My first though was 'Monopoly', but then I remembered that while that game *does* have both a bank and little tokens for buildings, the buildings are houses and hotels, with the bank not being a piece on the game board at all.)
I'm mostly familiar with the banked tracks from the 1975 movie Rollerball, which has the future dystopian blood sport with aspects of roller derby, among other things.
When I was a kid, the matches were televised back to back with wrestling. The skaters had day jobs. One of the female 'heels' worked at a grocery store, and one of the males was a bicycle messenger. There were 8 periods, with the woman and men alternating. There are still videos of some old matches on TH-cam, if you're curious.
I know that because it's an American invention the pronunciation is correct, but still there's a part of me that cringes inside when I hear 'derby' pronounced with an 'er' rather than an 'ar' sound.
I didn't realize there was another way of saying it. That said, I appreciate that you think the inventor should get to dictate the pronunciation (or at least becomes a proper one) because that's my primary argument for GIF being like the peanut butter
@@KubbozI say the letters but if the guy who invented it said it was ping yeah... If someone has a name that I would pronounce different but they introduced themselves as this other thing then that's what I'll call them
I was originally thinking Tokens on a board game, but then i know if Warhammer etc people who don't have any issues maintaining their banks specifically, so then i thought scalextrics tracks?
I was wondering why they’d not been on (I thought they might appear for the 100tn episode). Having seen the latest Technical Difficulties I’m guessing that is the reason why :)
Knew it as soon as Tom said banked track. Flat track roller derby became very popular in the early to mid 2000s because banked tracks were so expensive to build. It's been a decade since I was involved - as a ref, coach, and player - but roller derby is so much fun on any track, either flat, banked, or even outside in a parking lot.
Copied from the Wikipedia artical: Roller derby is a roller skating contact sport played on an oval track by two teams of five skaters. It is played by approximately 1,250 amateur leagues[note 1] worldwide, though it is most popular in the United States.[2] A 60-minute roller derby game, or bout, is a series of two-minute timed jams. Each team, typically with a roster of 15, fields five skaters during each jam: one jammer, designated with a star on their helmet, and four blockers. During each jam, players skate counterclockwise on a circuit track. The jammer scores a point for each opposing blocker they lap. The blockers simultaneously defend by hindering the opposing jammer, while also playing offense by maneuvering to aid their own jammer. Because roller derby uses a penalty box, power jams, in which one team has a temporary numerical advantage after a foul, can have a major effect on scoring.[3][4]

I agree
Never going to happen.
We're still looking at ways to make this happen. -- David (producer)
Flat room, as opposed to a ballroom.
A ballroom is also flat.
@@Sylvander1911 But only one is a pun.
Or maybe decarbonated rooms?
*Slow clap*
Sharp room
I really really really really love this cast.
General comment, but just wanted to again say thank you to the title writers and thumbnail makers for avoiding spoilers nowadays.

I can't believe NO ONE asked Ella what her derby name was!
He said NASCAR and one of my two brain cells fired up and said "No, it's roller derby"
When I first heard the question, my instant reaction was ‘blood bank’.
Omg I think this is the first time that I came up with the answer on my own! I was so excited when Tom Scott just said exactly what I was thinking.
THIS is 1 where, for me, the word-play is truly-AWESOME!
It took me too long to admit I might have been wrong with sperm banks

I like the jargon-related ones. So many obscure uses for normal words.
Whip It was partially filmed in the town I live in!
Are you in Michigan or Texas?
I have never heard about roller derby.

You have now!
Ninh Ly has a good video explaining the rules. It's more complicated than you might think. It looks like a race, but it's not.
We must learn what Ella's pun-y roller derby name was.
Nope, I was still thinking trains when Tom got it. Good question.
My home team is:
Wheels of Justice
with a name like that, who wouldn't be a fan?
I play for the Undead (Pittsburgh Roller Derby), we also have the Zom-Bees and the Ghouls
So it wasn't what I was thinking. 😆
Tom said Velodrome, and I thought Roller Derby. Will I be correct?
you were
One of those two, or their combination, made me think of the game Rollerdrome.
halfway-or-so-through guess:

.
slot car racing? or just model car racing in general?
3:17, I'm guessing that they abandoned the normal spectator area and instead rented a flat with a view of the event they wanted to see.
Initial thoughts: banks not as in financial ones, perhaps river banks, banks as in "a set of" like battery banks?
Finally I got the right answer in my first guess!!
can I just make the statement, all of these contestants look really great.
When is a room not a room? When it's a wardrobe.

@@teamcoltra I assume you pronounce png as "ping"? :P
But its spelled derby not darby (which is a location)
@@KubbozI say the letters but if the guy who invented it said it was ping yeah...

There should ABSOLUTELY be roller-darby events that are exactly the same except fancy…
Even though it turned out to be roller derby if curious about Nascar banking check out Daytona track.
Honestly my first thought was "squash?"
I was originally thinking
Tokens on a board game, but then i know if Warhammer etc people who don't have any issues maintaining their banks specifically, so then i thought scalextrics tracks?
Wouldn't roller derby be MUCH slower on a flat track? :\ makes me feel kind of bad for the teams
It is, and its also ironically less safe
TechDiff Lateral please!

Now I just have to see Ella competing.
that sounds fun
SPOILER ALERT
I wouldn't say that it's huge in the U.S. It peaked in 1989 with RollerGames.
My prediction is skateboarding/rollerblades
Everyone said room too many times it doesn't sound like a word anymore.
That many Brits pronouncing it “durby” hurt my brain
I think you'll find they're actually pronouncing it "derby".
I'm Canadian American and say it the same way
@@Squant I think that the point was that Brits usually pronounce it "darby" in other sports.

Spoiler protection just in case
So my guess just after the question is read: pendolinos.
I thought that this was about IndyCar having less ovals...
