      @@brendonrookes1151 I mean... who told the kid about Santa in the first place? If parents want their kids to be grateful to the right person, they will tell them who actually gave the presents. Also bonus of not lying to your kid about something you yourself don't believe in.

    Checking that the psych meds have been swallowed and not stored in the broken tooth at the back of the mouth.
    Wishing that government would fund more personal carers for one on one with patients from aged care.
    Having to locate the patient who has come from aged care, again.
    Trying not to laugh at the bizarre reasons people give you for why they are sick, and explaining basic hygiene to them instead.
    Trying to explain to patients that yoga really won't cure cancer, broken bones etc.

    As a medically retired RN, I laughed through this until I cried and then laughed some more. Thank you for this!
    I worked nights and loved it. Except for the cafeteria being closed after midnight. Most of the time, I brought my food from home, but occasionally I'd forget. Without the cafeteria, it was either the vending machines or maybe grab some applesauce or soup from the kitchen where we kept food for patients who needed a little something to tide them over. It was frowned upon, but needs must.
    One of the best parts of working nights was the different rhythm. Not a lot of admissions, having to take a history, having to do transfer paperwork, scheduling tests, calling transport 500 times to take a patient to their test, no discharges, having to do all the discharge paperwork, etc. At night, patients mostly sleep. That said, they still require monitoring, medications, occasional treatment, and, of course, there's often an emergency with at least one patient that requires a call to a doctor who can't be found. Still, all of that is better than what happens on days.
    Thanks, too, for the recognition about (the lack of) bathroom breaks! Is it any wonder most new nurses end up with a kidney infection or three during their first 6 months on the job?
    And don't get me started on the meal break! If I ever got through a full break uninterrupted, it was a miracle. It's more like just enough time to grab a carrot or some celery to munch on before being called back to the floor. Nurses become experts in snackable foods that are still (mostly) healthy.
    Regardless of how crazy the job gets, the one thing that makes you return again and again is the patients. For every jerk (or jerky family member), there are ten great patients. Helping them through their illness or injury, comforting them during the worst of their stay, being able to know you were probably the one bright spot in their day...that's why we do what we do.
    Even though I can no longer work as a nurse, I miss it terribly! Throughout the pandemic, I found myself wishes I could be back on the wards and care for patients once again. Since I couldn't, I've just kept in touch with my friends who were on the frontlines & let them know how much their hard work means to everyone.
    Thanks again for this great video. You capture the true essence of what nurses deal with.

      Wow, you really loved your job, eh? I’m sure you were a real blessing to your patients. So you gave then and continue to give now through your encouragement. I understand how you feel because I’m the same but it was teaching for me.
      We have to remember to do the best we can with what we have. At the moment, it is time & words of encouragement.

    • @JoanieBC
      @JoanieBC 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@artwithheart3142 I did love nursing so much! It wasn't a job, it was ME. I don't know how else to explain it.
      Teaching was also a consideration for a while, but nursing actually ended up incorporating teaching with the medical care, so that was a win.
      How long did you teach? What grades/ages? I bet you're THE teacher the kids still remember with great fondness! Teachers are heaven sent, if you ask me. You have so many roles to play & you do it on a shoestring budget. If there were any justice in this world, teachers would be paid so much more than they are and school budgets would be tripled. Thank you for all you've given!

    • @artwithheart3142
      @artwithheart3142 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I worked for 30 years, mainly Middle School but did a variety of roles. I think nursing and teaching are very similar. All the admin, meal breaks that exist on paper but not in reality, doing those extra things to make the difference, being on call to sort out the needs. Just know that you have made a difference and continue to. I can see that you have a good sense of humour too, so very necessary to survive in any profession!!! Now is the time to take care of yourself and your loved ones ☺️😀💐

    • @JoanieBC
      @JoanieBC 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@artwithheart3142 I agree completely. Having to keep going even when you're physically and emotionally drained, the breaks that aren't true breaks, inservice meetings, CEUs, teacher/student & nurse/patient ratios admin will try to convince you aren't absolutely necessary, outsiders not understanding what it is you actually do & thinking your job must be easy because all you do is talk to people, and no one realizing just how much you take to heart your interactions with students or patients AND their families.
      The minute you stop caring is the moment you realize you need to take a break. Whether it's a vacation or perhaps changing departments or facilities, you just need to regroup because there's no way you can do anything less than give 100% of your skills/education to those who rely on you.
      I'm not sure there are many jobs where this is the case, but education and healthcare are definitely both necessary and it's essential to be at the top of your game every time you clock in.
      It's been such a joy to talk with you!

    ooooh yes, I'm a vet student but I've worked at quite a few vet hospitals and clinics and can say this definitely applies for vet nurses too (plus vet nurses doubling as reception too BC we never have enough staff)
    love to all the nurses out there, animal and human. You guys are the best and the shit you have to put up is absolutely unmatched. Keep up the great work and take care of yourselves! 💕💕💕💕💕

    I love this video and show it to my nursing students - they all love it and its a great way to finish off the semester when they are all tired, overworked and under paid xx

    I had the most wonderful holiday.....I mean 3 day hospital stay last year in a public hospital in Brisbane. Nurses were just incredible, I felt so bad when the damn cannula kept going all at all hours and nurses having to keep coming in. And the food.....holy smackers, I could hardly believe I was in hospital! It was definitely the best 3 day holiday I'd had lol!
