    • Interstitial lengthening occurs in only certain bones, primarily those of the appendages.
    • Such lengthening takes place at the epiphyseal plate, a layer of hyaline cartilage in the metaphysis of a growing bone.
    1. Zone of resting cartilage.
    • Consisting of a hyaline cartilage pad made of inactive chondrocytes, this zone anchors the plate to the epiphysis.
    2. Zone of proliferating cartilage.
    • The mitotic proliferation of chondrocytes in this zone pushes the resting cartilage outward, helping to lengthen the diaphysis.
    3. Zone of hypertrophic.
    • In this zone, chondrocytes are stimulated to mature and enlarge, helping to lengthen the diaphysis.
    4. Zone of calcified cartilage.
    • This thin zone of dying and dead cartilage cells cements the epiphyseal plate to the diaphysis and borders the creation of new bony matrix.
    • Osteoclasts remove the calcified cartilage and make way for osteoblasts to build new spongy bone trabeculae.
    • proliferation of chondrocytes increases cell number.
    • The increased numbers of chondrocytes enlarge, moving the epiphysis away from the diaphysis. This increases the length of the bone.
    • The larger amount of dying cartilage tissue is replaced with bone matrix thereby solidifying the resulting elongation.

    Can i see my growth plates from normal knee x-ray?

    • @homeworkclinic2119

      Absolutely, Growth plates are easy to spot on an X-ray because they're softer and contain less mineral, making them appear darker on an X-ray image than the rest of the bone.

      Liked. That is an interesting thought. However doing so, may only serve cosmetic or aesthetic purposes. Such purposes are secondary to the true purpose of medicine, which is to heal. Future research, in all likelihood, will be dedicated to treatment of fatal diseases.

    great video! one question: by good nutrition, exercise and sleep bones grow quicker, but does it also mean the ephiphyseal plate closes faster? are people suffering from malnutrition shorter because their bones didn't grow enough to close the ephiphyseal plate?

    What is the hormone responsible for the closure of growth centers in the human body?

    • @homeworkclinic2119
      @homeworkclinic2119  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      human growth hormone (HGH). Produced by the anterior portion of the pituitary gland, HGH accelerates protein synthesis, particularly in skeletal muscle and bones.

    • @bertrand00956
      @bertrand00956 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@homeworkclinic2119 You didn't answer correctly. HGH is not the hormone responsible for the CLOSURE of the growth plate.
      Actually, there isn't a "hormone" responsible for the closure of the growth plate. The growth plate closes by itself through ossification, once the rate of ossification and degenerescence of chondrocytes surpasses the regeneration of the proliferative layer.
      While there are factor that can cause the growth plate to close prematurely/sooner, there isn't a single hormone or mediator that is responsible for growth plate closure alone ; it closes naturally with time, and the age at which it closes depends on numerous factors, mainly genetics, but also environmental.

    • @bertrand00956
      @bertrand00956 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@homeworkclinic2119 Also, GH exerces an influence on bone growth through somatomedin (IGF-1 mainly). Just saying that GH has anabolic effects doesn't explain how bone elongation works.

    In your opinion, can sleep deprivation and depression affect this process? Thus a kid won't achieve their maximum potential adult height.

    • @homeworkclinic2119
      @homeworkclinic2119  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sleep deprivation and depression are neuron-based conditions, they would have little to no effect on a person's height or growth potential.

    • @theinvertedprotagonist
      @theinvertedprotagonist 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@homeworkclinic2119 This is interesting. I thought that we grow and our body produces growth hormone when we sleep?

    • @homeworkclinic2119
      @homeworkclinic2119  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@theinvertedprotagonist Height is carefully controlled by hormones that are secreted in minute amounts when your body is ready to grow. The pathway that leads to growth and depression aren't linked in even the slightest way. Being under extreme stress, however, can impact any biological process, but it's not a significant factor here.

    • @brentporter986
      @brentporter986 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@homeworkclinic2119 While it may be true there isn't much demonstrable evidence sleep has no affect on growth directly, you would be hard pressed to say it isn't linked in the slightest way. Someone under low sleep is by definition under high levels of stress. We cannot segment our understanding of human biology and medicine by simplysaying "that's a neuro problem so it isn't linked". Seems like a bit of an overreach.
      Whichever the case, this was a brilliant video and very helpful! Thanks for your work.
