To all freaking out about Isaac going camping with the storm coming: they live on the edge of the forecasted area and none of the weather forecasters were really saying they expected anything worse than our normal winter storms that we get here once or twice a winter. These ice storms only happen every few years and this one has been being compared with a storm that happened in the 1970s by my parents generation (I was only 2 when that one happened). They make videos and Isaac goes to scenic places and tests out gear. It makes sense that he wanted to do a winter snow test with his truck camper and he was thinking the girls would be safer and happier at home than with him on this trip. Weather was worse than any of us anticipated.

@@LeaveHerWild my husband and I have lived in our house for 13 years and are both Oregon born/raised…this storm has shown us weaknesses in our winter storm preps. You guys are in your first winter in your home. It takes a few years to get things lined up to know what you need in your specific area for these storms. Our families both live out of town like you and a couple basic preparations when any storm is forecast is to fill the tub with water for flushing the toilet and bring in firewood so you don’t have to go out in the weather to get it initially if you need to switch over to heating with it.

Hey Jaylena, having grown up in New England, we always put our refrigerated stuff outside in cooler on the back porch. Stays cold, does not usually freeze and you don't need to run down power supply. Heat water on the wood stove in a pot for washing, tea, etc. and you are good for awhile. Stay strong.

Jaylena, if you are on a septic system and well, do not flush your toilets. You’re holding tank will run dry. I usually keep quite a few large milk bottles, full of water to flush the toilets, but I have a gravity system, so I’m OK doing that. I turn the water off below the toilet, and just fill the holding tank manually.

Save empty milk cartons and use to fill with water for emergencies. Also get canned soups stews canned meats and vegetables for you never know when you will need winter or summer. Keep manual can openers on hand along with plenty of matches lighters and flash lights and don’t forget the batteries. Keep emergency kit both medical and type you would carry in auto on hand. Buy variety of cast iron for your wood stove. Stay safe!

After being a 40 year- homeowner, I've learned to be proactive by listening to weather forecasts in winter. Make sure to have food & water, blankets & be together to keep each other calm. Google hints for storms. keeping water flowing using a red lamp in the watershed, opening kitchen cabinet doors to keep pipes warm, and dripping the faucet. Fill the bathtub for toilet flushing and put bleach into the water if the need arises.. I'm now alone so the Bluedi might be a good investment to have, Best of luck &stay safe!!!!

I keep emergency bins for outages, whether it be tornados, ice & snow storms, bomb, etc. In the bins are 1). emergency food & water supplies; 2). Power supplies - portable charged power banks, candles, batteries, first aid kit, wool blanket, socks, gloves, hats, heating source of choice. It’s always good to keep your feathers numbered for such occasions😊

What an eye-opener, eh? No stored food. No stored water. No plans for heat. What if the phones were down? What if it was for more than a couple days? Often when electricity is out, gas pumps won't function. If you know a storm is headed your way, gas up your vehicle. Store some ethanol-free gas with stabilizer for generators. Always have cash on hand because ATM cards don't work in power outages. I hope everyone prepares everywhere for these sorts of situations.

You have air tight wood burners in that room. Close the door after you load it up with wood. Don’t leave the door open after loading it up. Your wood will burn longer….I lived in Wyoming…..65 degrees below zero..the earth stove/airtight stove is a wonderful thing. Also..as the other poster said….put your food outside…maybe in a cooler…and let the frigid air keep your food cold. I always had a stocked pantry as soon as fall came because getting out to a store was near impossible.

Trying to go out and buy food and water when we get and alert is to late. Also we fill the bathtub with water for toilet use. Seems like this kind of weather comes during the winter months. I remember in 93 the “Storm of the Century” it was called! The East coast of Maryland… We were without power for a few weeks! We lived in a small trailer dead in the middle of the woods. My youngest daughter was just over a year old. The scariest thing was hearing all those trees snapping and falling all around us. I clearly remember taking my daughter and hiding underneath our kitchen table. I was so frightened a tree was going to smash through the roof. It was a trailer and the danger was so high. We finally walked down to the end of the road and my father came to get us. I kept calling him and crying. Dad, where are you, hurry! 😂 He was trying to be reassuring that all was going to be ok and as soon as he melted the 4 inches of ice off his windshield he would be there… felt like it took hours to do that! Our state started cutting back all the trees around power lines after that. Even today you can’t find a power line close to tree branches… 😂

Another option is to put tarps or blankets covering the windows in the back where the wood stove is. We use to have to block off a room and all camped out when the power went out and we has a wood stove. You can cook on it and stay warm. Blocking that room off would have been a good option. Always have a stocked pantry. You never know when an emergency will happen. Get some battery operated lights to hang up. If you know a storm is coming in, premake some good stews, chilli or easy to waem up meals. Pasta, cornbread etc. When it hits around 30° always leave your water trickling so the pipes dont freeze.

First, congrats for keeping your child and yourself calm in a stressful environment. I can empathize with all the unknowns you faced because we lost our water 3 days ago when a patch of ice caused a driver to slide into the water main into our home. We found ourselves going out and refilling our 5-gallon waterbottles, and also filled 1-gallon waterbottles. We ended up having 23 gallons of water to last until the water lines could be fixed. Insult to injury our power went out and that left us with one heat source in the house, A downstairs wood stove. We lined up the 3 1-gallon bottles next to the fireplace to have semi warm water to flush toilets and so on. WE kept refilling them from the larger bottles as we used the water that was warm enough not to freeze in our plumbing. We used the fireplace to bake foil-wrapped potatoes and we also used our between floor registers to filter heat up into the main part of the house. We didn't plan it that way, it just came out of brainstorming. Good practice for more serious inconveniences

I know that sounds like a lot and it's a lot of work but we had a bunch of them around our house and we had them all taken out because if they fall they can totally crush the house and when they get that old they do break and fall and ice storms also try to keep water trickling in your faucets so that your pipes don't freeze. Keep a couple of five galloon buckets with water to flush the toilet, You will learn all these as you go. I would also keep all those power stations charged fully all the time.

Close the door but leave the window to the bathroom open so as to get some heat. Their entire outside is a freezer but you have to be careful to MIT attract bears. New to your channel. Hope you take heart on all the suggestions made by your viewers. It must have been scary for sure worrying about the trees falling on your home. I am confused as to why the windows were all opened where the stove was? You can also use a hot plate to heat up food with your Bluetti. Using coffee pot with Bluetti can give you hot water for warm liquid consumption. If you have a tent, prop it up in the living room for added warmth and sleep in it if needed. Contain yourself to one room, Use plastic sheeting if necessary to close off room. I had to do that once as I didn't have power was for three days. I did have a fireplace in that room. I slept on couch. Also at Dollar tree you can get solar sticks that you can use room to room. Don't waste solar power for TV when you need it for more important items. (unless you need news update). A 5 gallon bucket, garbage bag and cat litter you have a potty for emergency. Watch You -tube videos on food prepper and emergency situations. I like "Alaska Granny" for basic information on prepping. "Provident Prepper" is also good. Lots of great information out there on other channels. Keep hat on your darling baby, as you loose heat thru your head. Good luck in the future.

We purchased a couple of very powerful rechargeable flashlights and some of the little pop up lantern lights. No batteries needed. Just keep them charged via the Bluetti or regular power. What is nice is you can keep your Bluetti charged via the gen. Glad Isaac made it home safely. After this is over, you need to pick up some back up freeze dried foods, and other foods for storage. Again, you are a real survivor girl!

I watched a couple youtube vids recently where a guy rigged his gas furnace to run off a Bluetti.. or equivalent. It was a matter of modifying the power into the furnace from a direct connection to a pigtail plug plugged into an outlet. I don't remember how long it could run, but it did run the furnace controller and the blower.
Back in the 70s, I lived in an apartment. We had a huge blizzard that trapped me in the apartment for about 5 days. The car was buried up to the trunk.By Saturday, I had to restock the groceries so I got my backpack and huge honkin' boots then trudged to Krogers. I saw someone had come on skis, and another cruising down a 4-lane highway in a snowmobile hauling a trailer of supplies. After that, I got into the habit of keeping the larder stocked, especially in winter.

As someone who has lived in New England her whole life I can honestly say that the ice is the most terrifying culprit. Heavy wet snow is dangerous of course, but the ice always weighs down those power lines and branches and that puts so many things in danger & makes the most horrible sounds! Be sure to trim back any overhanging branches if you don't wish to remove the trees. Keep salt handy. Always have batteries, candles, canned goods, extra pillows and blankets nearby, water in the tub etc. Use your power source wisely. Candles for light instead of plugging in lights helps prolong battery life on your Blue Etti. Those fans above the stove to push the heat outward would be helpful also. You still did a wonderful job and didn't panic so great work Mama! Always take warnings of possible storms seriously tho, and prep beforehand so you're not caught unprepared. Stay safe, keep gas in your vehicle, and most of all...be sure youre up to date on your homeowners insurance!

My daughter lives in Southeast Texas has been through her share of hurricanes, worst one being Harvey. She is very prepared-has generator, has 4 ten gallon gas cans marked hurricane that she keeps filled, marks them so they don't get used for lawnmower and such. There is a large shelf in her garage that she keeps jugs of water, TP, propane bottles, campstove, bags for camping toilet-that sits under shelf- hand sanitizer, water purification filters, battery operated fans, radio, and powerful flashlights and battery operated lights and lanterns. In her pantry she makes sure she has a variety of canned soups, fruits, veggies, crackers, peanut butter, granola bar, shelf stable milk, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, pasta and sauces. That girl is prepared!

Oh gosh, I can only bet Issac was frantic trying to get home and make sure his ladies were good. I was worried for him, if it was any colder where he was. Jaylena, you handled it all like a champ! Preparation is what gets you through these types of difficulties. As it warms up, get prepped for fire season! Way before so you know what you have, make a list of what you’ve got and need to grab, as well as one to let you know where everything is. For the rest of the winter, I’d keep the shop set up for the no power days you may encounter. I have to add that little Miss Ember is one very brave little munchkin! I think she was curious about what was going on, as much as she was spooked by the noises. I remember my daughter looking around, saying ‘wuzdat wuzdat???’, when she got spooked. The expression on her face was so cute and funny, it brought the tension down some….

Jaylena, first of all I just want to tell you that you did an amazing job dealing with the situation. You are such a wonderful mom! A couple of things I thought of as I was watching was, is there a way to move one of the wood stoves in the living room? In the corner behind where you had Ember's tent would be a great spot, and would be more central. Just an idea. It may not be an option for y'all. Another thing I thought of was, you could switch the stove to a propane stove and keep a hundred gal propane tank in the sun room. Then you wouldn't have to worry about not being able to cook as long as you had propane. My husband mentioned solar power for the well for times like this may not be a bad idea also. So glad you had the Bluetti to help! You did awesome! You can only do what you can with what you have! I'm proud of you! ❤

I'm so glad Isaac made it home safely and that you both had him there as support. You did a fabulous job holding it down for your daughter. I live in a cabin in a redwood forest in Santa Cruz Cnty, CA. I really do mean a forest, so I can totally relate to the fear of huge branches and/or trees coming down on your home. About 10 yrs ago we had a huge redwood come down. It fell across the entire peak of our cabin. I will never forget the noise of it made hitting our roof and then rebounding about three time after. We truly had Gods hand over us that night. We only incured a very small amount of damage and beyond that my husband and I were fine. No holes in our roof. I pray you didn't get any further damage and that you all are safe, warm and healthy. Happy New Year, here's to no more ice storms in 2024... ❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🤗🤗🤗

I know the feeling. It was one of the scariest moments of my life when the tree fell on my little guys bedroom. I was outside looking at the damage after a storm. My son was sleeping in his room. I have never ran so fast! It felt like I was running in water! I held him and cried. He was safe, the inside of his room untouched. The exterior house got it good and took the brunt. I will never forget that fear, though.
Here's the good news... we never had an issue like that again. The storm helped to shed all of the weak branches from the tree canopy. This is nature's way of pruning. One good time... and it was pretty much done. Take care, guys. Continue to stay safe and warm... Praying for safety...

💙🇺🇲 I don't know if you left the door of the wood stove open on purpose (filming purposes maybe?) or not but keeping it closed will do so much more to heat your place, but using the fireplace your heat is just going up the chiminy and your wasting your wood.
If you have a cooler, you could set out your food items that need refridgeration in it, out on your porch to keep cold. (Secure the cooler with paracord or any type of rope, bungee cords, etc., to keep critters out of it.
Maybe keeping the tv working should be a very low priority?
This past Christmas I myself bought the Bluetti AC180 (on sale) that came w/a couple of accessories for almost half price off!!!
Separately i bought one 200-watt solar panel (which i'll probably never use, that I talked myself into, but just in case, right?) and a couple more accessory cables i wanted to have on hand.

This storm was widely publicized for several days prior. how do you not have any food or water?. Start saving your milk jugs and wash them out- Then fill them up with water-you can store that for flushing toilets. Keep at least 3- 24 packs bottled water on hand at all times or several gallons of purified drinking water from walmart. This goes for all seasons not just winter. Each time you go to grocery store buy 2-3 extra canned goods , crackers, pasta, etc. -(things that you can cook easy with woodstove). and extra baby food and put in a cupboard and start building a stockpile. It doesnt take long before touve built up a small stock.

Power goes off so many times when we first moved here I bought a 7500W Generator. I then hired a electrician to wire the generator into the cabin electrical circuit. Power goes off I killed the main electrical box switch and off all the circuit breakers. Start the generator, switch generator main power breaker in the house box and one by one turn on the house's circuit breakers. Enough power to run water; furnace; water heater; refrig; lights; tv, garage door openers. The only con to that is supplying enough gasoline to run for a few days.

That looked so scary. But it's over now. Ember is getting so big. I am glad you are all safe.

We usually get ice storms nearly every winter at some point. Sometimes they last a week. Sometimes they're heavy ice; sometimes not so much. Worst ones can have up to 2" of ice. I really feel for you - empathizing with what you're going through. The electrical/utility companies are true heroes when these things happen.
