I've been looking at the boats history, and the pictures of the last time she was sold she looked great how did the previous owner let her get in this state!! Your doing a good thing in bringing her back
I've managed to get a copy of her full logs from the RNLI during her lifeboat career - page after page of an incredible set of rescues that are worth their own video alone. Really sad
It is sad, it annoys me when I see things like this... if you buy something like this you are a custodian and your supposed to look after it then pass it on when your done not just leave it to rot and ruin. i wish you all the best and every succes mate
Sadly, it does happen. People have a boat and good intentions, so they get it lifted out and start work on it then find it's too much for them to manage so it gets left sat in a yard. Reasons might be illness, family problems or money.. All can contribute to why something like this is becomes an abandoned project 😢
One possibility would be to look at dry ice blasting. I have seen it used on an aircraft restoration and also to clean a particularly dirty V12 Ferrari engine. Scraping off the heavy rust would be a help of course. Karcher in the Uk sell the equipment and or rent it. It might be worth a look if your budget allowed as it shouldnt impact either the timber or the steel. Vapour honing would be another option using water and compressed air. Similas to sand blasting in method but with out the aggressive nature of abrasive media. I will follow the progress to see how things go. The Canvas material on the fender strip from the first video which I only found last night might be called Calico? a form of sail grade canvas from way back. My mother used a light version to boil the christmas puddings. 😄
Definitely done the right thing by covering her most important thing for now is stopping the water coming in, she can dry out over spring and summer now. Keep the updates coming
Fresh water will kill most wooden boats and particularly mahogany/hardwood ones. Removing the bronze bungs on the bottom ( if they are still there) will help drain water and allow a small air flow to the bilges. Nice to see another lifeboat being restored 👍🏻
Excellent work mate. She gonna be a job but worth it.😮 Just let her dry slowly now. 😅 Just do one thing at a time so it don,t overwhelmed. Right got me beer and Popcorn carry on and keep at it.😊
Excellent work , nice to see you started , once you have that keel finished it will start to feel a different boat and with a coat of paint on it you will feel energized for the next part.
The phosphoric acid is doing its work right now on the remaining surface rust. It's my day off tomorrow, then plan to apply first layer of anti-corrosion primer on Monday 👍
after removing the rust flakes from the keel treat it with phosphoric acid, it turns rust (iron oxide) into iron phosphate (rust inhibitor) remove any cristals that form and paint with rust stopper paint.
I've definitely thought of it as a temporary measure but I'm surprised how well the boat has been drying out the last few days. Condensation has been way down since I opened the hatches under the tarp. Will keep an eye on it 👍
Rented sand blaster would have made short work of that keel rust. Not clear what the "unsympathetic" concerns would be? Even for historical reasons, sandblasting was a thing when the boat was built.
Watching you drive and talk was not what I expected when I subscribed! I hope this is not going to be the normal routine, if so say so now so I don't waste my time
uh after seeing that three dollar wire wheel and the way you were working with it considering the task at hand you have with that boat i think you should get some knowledgable help
I just found this channel, so I have some catching up to do. But this already looks very promising. Thanks for sharing!

Very exciting project! Looking forward following it
Soda blasting might be an idea for the hull.

Good advice. Little and often is my strategy right now. Let's see how it goes 👍

I know I'm late to this party, but a needle descaler would have been a good way to start removing the rust. Then wire brush.

Needle gun for the hull.
Is it worth sticking a dehumidifier in every time your working on the boat

@@dunkirkdowager I'm really happy that your saving a piece of history

Hugh I think you're going to really like the third episode when it lands this weekend
you should watch ship happens they are doing up a dunkirk boat as well you might get some pointers

Fortunately for me no one told all of the rust I took off with it 😁
