  • Here's a short video of what goes on in a free flight session. This is not the full session but just chose some highlights.
    Feel free to ask questions if you want to know more about what's going on.
    One of these days I'm going to make a video of the free flight journey of my eckies.

    Loving the crystal clear male vs female behaviour here:
    OMEGA: [does whatever he's asked, almost instantly, for the tiniest reward.]
    ALPHA: Perhaps if you made your argument more convincing?
    Remember that in the wild, the female sits in a tree hollow being fed by not just one male but MULTIPLE males. She has it figured out.

    • @BirdsofCebu
      @BirdsofCebu  ปีที่แล้ว

      you're absolutely right. the distinct differences in behavior between male and female. it's very interesting because the differences manifest distinctly in both appearance and behavior.

      To be fair, Im not against cages, but I'm against caging birds forever. Cages for me, are like their "nest" or safe personal space. But they NEED to get out and fly and stretch their wings. Even in a "big cage" it's still nothing compared to a big space to fly and glide

    Hi, how did you train them indoors first, I have also pair of birds(Budgerigars). How did you taught them recall, how long do you think it will take to train them indoors and how long did you train them?

    • @BirdsofCebu
      @BirdsofCebu  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Budgies are great social birds! For me their only problem in free flight is their vulnerability from predators (even small predators are a danger to them).
      Because they are flock birds they tend to have strong recall (like macaws and sun conures). Ill try to make a video soon about how to do indoor recall training.As for how long, it took me several months (mostly because I wanted to be 100% sure before I took them outdoor). Some can do it in just 2-3 months of indoor training.

    • @BirdsofCebu
      @BirdsofCebu  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi there! This really encourages me to get back to vlogging again hehe.
      I think eckies are not as difficult as cockatoos and macaws but they do require some level of commitment. I won't ask about your experience but rather id ask you this:
      1. Do you have the space? They need to fly, it's vital for them to exercise or they grow overweight
      2. Do you have time? Time to meal prep because their diet is very specific, and time to train
      3. Can you handle the noise? although macaws and cockatoos can BE SO MUCH LOUDER, but eckies can be scream queens.
      From there you can feel it out if eckies are for you :) But are they great companion birds? I think they are if you are able to compromise yourself with their wild tendencies. (and the bird should never be the one compromising)

    Hello, do you recomend eclectus for free flight?

    • @BirdsofCebu
      @BirdsofCebu  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello!
      When it comes to comparing to other species, the eclectus is more challenging to train than let's say a sun conure or a macaw.
      However, an eclectus is an excellent flyer when trained properly.
      I won't recommend it if you're doing free flight for the first time because there will be a lot of challenges. But if you are patient enough I think they make great free flight parrots.

    • @BirdsofCebu
      @BirdsofCebu  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eckies at a young age tend to ignore food at first. I have noticed compared to other birds they are a challenging species to introduce new food to. I recommend just adding bits of it to the pellet diet. Especially do this when they are hungriest (morning). Be patient, in my experience alpha and omega began to be more interested with new food when they were a year old.
      Best veggies are the ones rich with vitamin A. Carrots, pumpkin, squash, bell pepper, broccoli.

    Hi . I currently have a cocktail and I am thinking of getting another bird . Do you thing the eclectus is a good bird ? Any other birds as good options ?

    • @BirdsofCebu
      @BirdsofCebu  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eckies are a hit or miss when mixing with other birds. Sometimes they're chill, sometimes they don't appreciate the other bird's presence. Though they won't be as aggressive as other parrot species it is still helpful to tread with caution.
      If you are considering another bird species, perhaps a sun conure, or any other conure species.
      However if you do choose an eclectus, keep them in separate cages first, then allow them out together under supervision until you see shared social activities that can say they're fine together.

      Hi John, Anton is right. Females tend to be quiet until they get hormonal and loud. Males tend to talk more as I've observed, but they can also be silent.
      While gender differences in behavior may be generally true, personalities in birds tend to surface that may surprisingly be different from what we may assume of the species and gender.
